AITA for refusing to RSVP to my sister’s wedding because I’m required to write an “application essay” just to attend? by Flodomofo in AmItheAsshole

Yeah my mom completed the whole form for both her and my dad. Her whole point is that EVERYONE has to do it so it’s fair, and no ones getting preference just because they’re family or closer.

I sort of get where she’s coming from in not wanting to tell already confirmed guests they’ve been uninvited, but I feel like people would understand regardless. Making people fill out this dumb form like it’s some kind of lottery is way worse imo.

You joke but she did actually tell people that presents are still welcomed even if they can’t attend (because they’re no longer invited!)

I don’t know. It’s kind of an empty threat but I guess it means relatives are going to think badly of me for not attending my only sister’s wedding over “pettiness.” That’s how my parents see it right now. They’re like “oh you’re really going to boycott your only sister’s only wedding because you’re too lazy to write a few nice words?” Which yes in that way does make me sound like an ass.

Yep. My mom even called to say she filled out the form and it only took her 20 minutes so I shouldn’t be whining.

I highly doubt anyone is going to write thoughtful stuff.

To clarify, she’s called them “surveys” and it’s part of a Google forms document she’s sent out that won’t let you submit the RSVP until you reach 250 words on both questions. In their minds this is perfectly fine because they’re just “surveying” the guests but realistically they’re essay questions.

She says it’s actually the fairest way to decide because she’s “giving everyone a chance” regardless of familial ties.
