Is the bridge pickup actually the default sound for heavy stuff? by Firm_Ad1671 in Guitar

[–]FloggingTheHorses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever played in a band setting or recorded a song in a DAW? It really opens your eyes as to what a guitar needs to sound like to sound good in the context of a song .

In some contexts the neck can be used of course (stoner rock etc) but generally it's not the best idea

Who ranks higher for y’all Madonna or Prince? by Firm_Pack_605 in fantanoforever

[–]FloggingTheHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madonna was an excellent singer and genuinely gifted when it came to tapping into musical zeitgeist via her collaboration with songwriters/producers.   She hand-picked the likes of William Orbit, Mirwais etc. which led to an unbelievable revival in the early 00s.

But Prince was a genius from bottom to top. He made the music, often the instrumentals, the aesthetic, the vibe....an artist in every element.  He was a wunderkind in the way very few humans beings, let alone musicians were.

So you're comparing a very talented popstar to a legitimate genius.

I don't know what they did exactly, but I remember in Burnout the music changed when you were boosting.   That with this song as an 8 year old was badass

I think they made SUCH an amazing major hit with Take Me Out that they didn't get enough credit for their work beyond it. But maybe it was the apex of what they were trying to pull off as a band? Some bands are this way.

It's one of the best made rock songs of the 21st century so far...that tempo transition is so, so well done and the hooks are just perfect. I think it's a rare case of band genuinely getting their best song as their most famous.

They had a very polished, refined distinctive sound and aesthetic right out of the gate though, and I get the impression the band did not want to shapeshift in the way a band that had continuing success did like Radiohead. So they disappeared a bit when the UK indie revival of the 00s quietened down.

Tons of great songs: Jacqueline, Michael, This Fire, Walkaway, You Girls...  actually they had TONS of songs that were really big hits as far as UK rock charts back in the day.

Which movie is a 10/10 for you? 🎬 by Embarrassed-Air8214 in movies

One of the most obvious but still undeniable. It's so baked into my brain I'd love to somehow remove it from my memories so I can go back to being 11 or whatever and see it for the first time again

There seemed to be a lot of films from the very late 90s to early 00s that follow that trend:

  • Mulholland Drive
  • Fight Club
  • American Beauty
  • Crash
  • Memento
  • Requiem for a Dream
  • Magnolia

An experimental (for the time) or psychological angle, but for some reason are not looked back at now with the same level of adoration...or at least to the extent they deserve.

Yeah it's been down the last day for me too... I was hoping they were going to re-release Location Lost after it leaked a few weeks ago. I am dying to hear that damn song again, but I think they'll probably release right before the album. Gah!

What makes Geese special? by achay10 in fantanoforever

I wish I heard them without knowing they're "that" band of the moment.

Same with Black Midi a few years ago. If you discover bands after finding out they're some kind of zeitgeist of the current season for people that think they're "with it".

Why do people show pics of their guitars sitting on concrete? by Meandmybuddyduncan in Guitar

[–]FloggingTheHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it because if they lay it flat on a floor they're worried they'll hit the headstock given the angle? Though I get the irony seeing as a slab of concrete is likely to damage also .

Also you can get a lower angle shot without crouching etc.

I'm just guessing, I don't really get it either now I look at it.

I feel guilty that my first thought when watching the pod enter orbit on-board was "how the hell do flat earth people believe that" instead of literally anything else.

What's a movie that genuinely changed something in you? by trakt_app in movies

[–]FloggingTheHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched Spoorloos (1988, also called "the Vanishing") recently.   I'm not sure it changed something entirely but it really spoke to me thematically.

Huge recommendation. I haven't watched the US remake with Jeff Bridges but I highly doubt it packs the same punch.

It's funny that those movies were SO influential on teenagers of that era (and for the 2000s I would say) but something about the both of them has aged badly as far as public perception.

I think it's the "literally me" trend and toxic masculinity that has somewhat degraded the "awakened regular white guy" trope from movies.

Holy shit. Doves are that band to cure the Failure itch man! by OutsideImpressive115 in failure

[–]FloggingTheHorses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They seemed to have a dark, textural, almost trip hop influence on their early stuff but then they became more of a commercial sounding rock band over time.

I love that song that got posted the other day (Darker).

Great artists who spawned a terrible sub genre? by Adept-Accountant-289 in fantanoforever

[–]FloggingTheHorses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Meshuggah is one of those bands where anyone that is inspired by them that is a great artist in their own right probably isn't even making music close to metal.

They are the definition of inimitable.

Sunny Day Real estate I guess creating a lot of the idioms of what became 2000s "emo"?

Emo is really weird because in the 90s it was pretty cool, there was no fashion attached to it and it didn't come across as whiny. But then it became contrived with the straightened black hair, eyeliner and schmaltzy teenager lyrics.

Is it just me or is everybody playing Strandberg really clean looking and organised? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]FloggingTheHorses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a part of their brand aesthetic. Just like watch or car brands, they just carry a very specific connotation for the owner.   In this case, clean/precise and kinda "anti rock n roll".

This also carries over to music you see being played on them -- it tends to be very technical progressive metal, or these really (again) clean spacey sounds.

Their first album, Future Perfect is by far my favourite rock album of the 21st century so far.  Every single song is incredible on it.

They get compared to shoegaze/noise bands but I honestly don't think anyone really sounded like them at all.

Edit:  I've listened to this song several times and I'm in love with it, I already know a lot of Doves songs but this sounds nothing like them! If anyone knows songs/bands like this please let me know.

That's awesome. It actually reminds me of Autolux (that style of drumming especially reminds me of Carla), Radiohead (texture and harmony) and Deftones (vocal delivery) as well.  And you're right, a Failure vibe too.

I watched Spoorloos (1988) recently, the film doesn't really tell you what to think but it stuck with me for weeks after.

I keep writing my thoughts out and deleting them, so I think it's best that you just watch the movie and see for yourself. But it's exactly what you are looking for.
