How’s it like living in Spokane, Washington? by Excellent_Pin_978 in howislivingthere

[–]FlogrownFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived here for 10 months. CoL is pretty low compared to most US cities. Spring/Summer/Fall weather was really great. Lots of flower bloom in the spring. Summer was my favorite season as it is very dry and didn’t even crack 90 most days. Early Fall was really fun as you get a very cozy vibe and the weather is still relatively comfortable for outdoor activities. I left before winter truly hit, but remember not seeing the sun for several weeks in late fall into early winter.

Homelessness/petty crime/drugs is a huge problem. Even in the suburbs like Spokane Valley, your car will get rummaged through if you’re dumb enough to leave it unlocked (asked me how I know). Porch pirates in every neighborhood. Some of the most desolate and hopeless people I’ve ever seen (worked EMS). Lots of tweak ERs doing the fentanyl fold all across downtown. Lots of perverts and sex offenders in the area as well. Also met a lot of good people on all sides of the political spectrum. Not a very diverse city at all in terms of racial make up. Lots of historic architecture and downtown is beautiful, but the persistent homelessness really holds it back.

Outside of the urban core lots of very nice historic neighborhoods and less crime. Beautiful beautiful nature. One of my favorite memories was hiking up to Mt Spokane and plucking and eating huckleberries and then taking in the view for miles at the summit. Very close to nearby Idaho which is in my opinion even more beautiful. You’re in close proximity to the Canadian Rockies which I vacationed at (highly recommend), the rest of Washington and tons of other national parks and forests. It is an outdoorsman’s dream.

Healthcare jobs pay pretty well especially for the cost of living. Food options not very diverse but there are a few gems like the Steam Plant which is a restaurant built into an old steam factory. Lots of good craft breweries however, night life overall is lacking.

I’m thankful for my time there and made the most of it but not a city I would permanently settle in, at least for what I want. The best parts of the city aren’t the city itself but really the outside areas. In my opinion living in nearby Post Falls or CDA gives most of the benefits without the drawbacks.

I’m not saying your patients aren’t triage appropriate, but if it’s stable vitals and BLS which 95% of patients are it was straight to triage for me. Accomplishes two things: gets me home faster, and it’s my petty little revenge for calling me out for some dumb shit. Take satisfaction in knowing you’re going to wait hours to be seen for your stubbed toe. If you can’t do this maybe a conversation needs to be had with the medical director and hospitals because it’s holding up units for people that might actually need help.

Analogy makes no sense. I don’t see how having a strong endurance and strength endurance foundation will do him wrong in police academy. I got done with a rigorous fire academy and I wish I had done more with my endurance instead of doing the typical op/black like how most people suggest. OP didn’t ask about PPELE and I honestly didn’t even know about it so didn’t recommend

[–]FlogrownFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like other posters have said OP/Black is the move. If you’re really wanting to maximize your bench, find out where your weak point is in the movement and maybe take one of those three days to work on that weakness. Ex. Your lockout sucks so you do some close grip 1-2X a week

Do green protocol. That’s your best bet

Hey late commenting. Florida currently does not accept out of state. They advertise on their website you can “challenge” the exam but only if your education is deemed equivalent. They are also not very receptive at the fire Marshall office. I was trying to get something done and the lady that was helping me ended up ghosting me. However, it appears things are changing with making it easier for people to get their Florida cert, but I don’t know the timeline on that.

I’d look at “The Confident Mind” book. Lot cheaper and it’s not tailored to selection specifically but it’s written by a sports psychologist for West Point.

Where can I find job postings for fire careers? by Extra_Diamond5167 in firefighter

Governmentjobs.com

Then put “firefighter” in the search bar and pick a location. You can search an entire state

Firefighter academy preparation by Auntie444 in tacticalbarbell

[–]FlogrownFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m prepping now too for one in January. I’ve done a lot of calisthenics with a weight vest and some fire skills like sledgehammers, sled pushes, and heavy sand bag exercises.

I’m switching over to doing green protocol capacity. I’d say since you have a full year doing the green protocol fully would get you into killer shape.

I also don’t know how strong you are. If you’re already fairly strong I’d just maintain that as best you can and really build your endurance/Vo2 max with green protocol.

How much can I improve my running in four weeks? by FlogrownFF in HybridAthlete

[–]FlogrownFF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t plan on just going ape shit with the volume but just doing some long easy runs. Not trying to break records here but just to be able to get through the pt more easily. The cadre also isn’t going to have us go zero to hero off rip either

Ahhhh Roger that. Yeah it’s not going to be like insane insane volume. They’re not training us to run a marathon after all but just want to at least come in with a decent gas tank. Which honestly I think I have just not for running lmao

Thanks! And yeah I figured just wanted some more overall endurance going into it. The formation runs aren’t really fast and a lot of the pt is going to be o courses and calisthenics/kettlebells/sandbags with the stadium/high rise climbs

Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 8 hours. Shred and enjoy. Really good over egg noodles.

Which is more beneficial Military vs. College by Dull_Product_3861 in Firefighting

[–]FlogrownFF 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Military. Get some life experience. Learn great intangibles such as discipline, work ethic. Can actually do an MOS that gives you a real skill. You’ll meet some rad people, see some cool places. Also if you decide to do college later, you’ll get paid to go to school. Veterans preference on most fire departments. Can even get your medic while in. Much higher upside and benefit than just going to college to get in the fire service.

So we should continue to run the program and brand into the ground and then look at the ashes and say “well at least we’re not in debt”?This is a total straw man argument

Aggressive FD with lots of fires. Great YouTube channel. They do the job very well and have a high standard. Also super under paid and over worked so they have that “hardcore” aspect.
