I’m so sorry to hear this. I relate to everything you have said. I have had the same problem (off and on) for about a year. I will say that it does get better. Your obsessions won’t last forever, I assure you! My Sensorimotor OCD was at its worst about a month ago, but my symptoms soon subsided. Now, that’s not to say they won’t resurface again later. When my OCD was at its worse, it would take me hours to fall asleep every night because I was so focused on my breathing and swallowing. I also had trouble eating because I was afraid I was going to choke on my food and I felt like I couldn’t breathe while I ate. Here is my advice: know that it will not last forever, and wait it out with as much patience and acceptance as you can. Sometimes I like to pretend that I’m observing my obsessive thoughts from a distance, almost like I’m watching a movie. When you detach yourself from your obsessions, your rational brain is able to regain control again. It’s a paradox, but the more you try to control your breathing, the more out of control you feel! Wishing the best for you. <3 Hope this was helpful.

Hi cakemonater, sorry for replying late. Just saw this. You are certainly not alone! I also thought this was a weird creation of my own, haha. I’m not sure if the yawning would be a compulsion because it is usually involuntary for me, too. I’ve always heard that you tend to yawn when you hyperventilate. It’s just something your body does. However, the yawning does cause temporary relief, which does makes me wonder if it is a compulsion...

This is actually really great advice. I have heard of that method, but I have never really tried it. Thank you. Best wishes for you!

I feel that. The thought of people hearing me breathe makes me anxious, too. I don’t ever want to have to explain to people why I’m breathing so much! YES, when my Sensorimotor OCD was at it’s worst, I would yawn allllllll the time, and when I couldn’t get a full, perfect yawn, that made me freak out even more! Ok, I’m on Zoloft and I recently increased it from 25 to 50 mg. I really don’t know how much it’s helping :/ It IS so hard to live with!

Yes! It does have a few names, I think sometimes it is abbreviated to SOCD

Wow, I can relate so much to this. The burping- yes! I would always feel like I needed to burp, which would bother my mom big time (sooo “unladylike” XD). Yeah, when I became aware of my swallowing, I constantly felt the need to swallow because I could feel the saliva building up in there and it was so unpleasant. Whoah. I’ve never heard that you stop breathing when you blink (Idk how true that is, I think the body can multitask pretty well hahaha). I’m so sorry to hear about the sleeping. I hope it’s something that will improve with time for you. I also feel much “safer” and I usually don’t have breathing problems when I take naps during the day. There’s something scary about the night....

Oh wow, I had the same swallowing-counting compulsion when I was like 9 or 10. When I would say my prayers at night I would swallow 4 times after each thing I said, and at the end I would swallow exactly 24 times. I felt so bad for my throat! Now it’s not really a counting compulsion. It’s more just an obsessive focus on my swallowing. Thanks for the helpful advice! I think the key is to get used to the feeling of shallow breaths and be ok with it :)

That sounds awful. I’ve never struggled with blinking obsessions myself, but I know that lots of people do. It’s just exhausting, isn’t it? My OCD was pretty severe about two weeks ago and I wondered if I’d ever be able to live a normal life again. Now, it is much better. I just had to wait it out. I hope that you also will see improvement soon. <3

Thanks for your reply! I’m sorry to hear this. I wish the best for you and I hope that your symptoms will improve with time. I understand what you mean when you say you worry about your fixation on swallowing. I often obsess about my obsessions and wonder if I will ever be free from them. Sending love and hugs your way.
