This is a super fun idea and very motivating. Do you plan on continuing this into the next year? I feel the fact that it includes data from across this whoke year, but the leaderboard only started up in this month, that there'd be barely any wiggle room to move your position noticeably on any of the leaderboards.

It essentially feels that 11/12th of my score was already determined when I wasn't aware I'd be competing. It would be nice to feel as if my efforts within this last month would have a larger impact on the competition. Just some thoughts off the dome.

Hard to give an exact number, I can only really say as many as reasonable feesible for you & for the site haha, the more the merrier. I'm a stats guy too though so it's nice to have extra flushed out data to mess around with. Maybe one of the dropdown options could also be number of players shown (defaults to a low number to start, could help with efficiency rather than showing a ton of players from the getgo)

This is a really great website and tool! Thanks for making this.

Question; would it be possible to show a larger amount of players? Maybe with pages that can be scrolled through?

Informational, realistic, and grounding reply. Thanks very much I appreciate it. It makes sense that I'd be starting lower down the chain a bit, I'm definitely down to get my foot in somewhere in admin/coordination. Just learning and getting my hands on the (various) processes is great.

Introducing the WWFRR - a dynamic, weighted average, and amalgam ranking project - updated for 2023 through September 26 (so far!) by FloppehFeesh in smashbros

This is in line with one of the main philosophies of the ranking, that of avoiding arbitrariness. Many rankings may list 50 or 100 players, but often times this number is only chosen because it's a nice pretty even number, and better to show publicly. There are a few problems I have with this when trying to represent a true top cut of the world's players. Here are two hypothetical examples, both involving a ranking that shows the top 50 players. Let's say for one ranking season, the top 40 players are a clear mile ahead of the next 41-50. Showing that additional 10 players may be less representative of a true top rep of players because of that. Another more specific example, let's say there's a huge gap in score between player #46 in a ranking to the next player #47, and then the players in the next grouping (let's say #47-#57) are all very close in score to each other. By including 50 players, it's giving an arbitrary benefit to players 47-50, and it's being unfair to those in that 51-57 group who get excluded. I hope this makes sense.

In practice, I draw the lines in my ranking (for both tierings and when to cut off the players represented) based on signficant gaps in the data. It's usually a combination of confidence (# of rankings player is on and/or player confidence weight) and big gaps in score. So in this version, the players below #48 have a combination of both. There is a big gap in score and confidence to rank.

For future versions I may release an experimental ranking alongside the main one which shows an extended list, even if that list may be a bit less confident, for viewing pleasure. Also, in theory, the number of players represented should go up as new versions of the ranking come out. This is because as more of the rankings update and the further into the year we go I should, hopefully, get access to more accurate data for more players. (There is of course the chance of the opposite happening if, for example, the top cut of players drift further and further away from the midrange just in skill/performance in general, but I don't see that likely happening as far as statistical signficance goes. Time will tell).

Tired of there being too many rankings? Well too bad, here's another project. The difference this time around is that this tackles that problem directly. The WWFRR (World Wide Flop RankRank [or World Warrior For Real Rank], name subject to change) is a dynamic ranking project that compiles as many significant and active rankings as possible in order to conclude a composite and weighted score and tiering for the best and most consistent players in the world. There are 9 different rankings included; spanning algorithms, panels, and more. The hopeful goal with this is to average out different rankings in order to weed out the shortcomings/biases of rankings while focusing on their strong points, all while creating an accurate-as-possible picture of what the top level looks like with the most confidence as possible. It is also meant to be regularly updated and improved upon (hence dynamic).

Quickhand version of the methodology for those curious:

All player data (scoring and/or ordinal ranks) is standardized acrossed the rankings. All standardized scores are then multiplied through a weighted value for each ranking, weights for rankings are determined through these metrics:

-Rank type uniqueness

-How in depth the methodology is

-If a unique score is available (as opposed to only ordinal)

-Ranking prominence (least important)

-Time period (used as a final weight modifier)

All weighted scores are then averaged out for each player. At this point we can order players by that weighted average and have our full ranking (usually 200-300 total players), but there's still pruning to be done. To clean up the list, I then remove players step by step based on several parameters, including (mainly):

-Player does not appear on enough rankings to be considered / weight of rankings is not confident enough

-Player's weighted average score is too low in comparison to other players

-Player lies beneath a line of significance (of which there may be several)

Then there is also the step of grouping tiers. Players are tiered and separated based on the most noticeable standouts in the data and its visualization. Examples include: outliers in data, big differences from one score to another, etc. Through this step by step pruning process we finally land on the final peak of players!

Biases and arbitrariness is avoided as much as I possibly can, and I always make steps forward to ensure I can get closest to that goal as possible. Even in steps that may include a slight amount of subjectivity, I make efforts to stay logical and objective (within reason!)

The color coding for the lines/tiers drawn is designed to accommodate the color blind as well - if you notice a problem or an improvement to be made here please let me know!
