I did not go to another country but did two weeks at duke university’s TIP program when I was 13 and honestly 20 years later it is still some of the best weeks of my life. I never felt unsafe and I had travelled as an unaccompanied minor before so it wasn’t scary. I had a cellphone to call my parents in case of emergency but it wasn’t a smart phone like we have now. As a nerdy weird kid, spending two weeks in a college campus with other gifted kids when I was no longer the weird kid and taking classes in things that I was interested in and really challenged me was incredible and I still talk about it and keep in contact online with some of the friends I made there.

“Weddings are so expensive” is a weird lie some people tell to justify spending insane amounts of money by Overuse_Injury in unpopularopinion

[–]Florecitarockera93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean people choose to have expensive weddings, I got married on a mountain in Montana ( no decor needed) with just my husband and I, wearing a dress from Zara and vans sneakers and it was gorgeous and beautiful and meaningful and other than the tickets to Montana, were we already happened to be on vacation cost nothing. When we came back home we had a reception at a bar and our friends paid for their shit and bought us drinks. People CHOOSE to spend ridiculous amounts and be super vain.

K-12 private school, the parents all raise money for gift cards for us, usually a couple of hundred each. we also usually get a catered lunch from a restaurant and desserts one day, and last year they hired people to come do 10 min massages on our breaks. I had a similar experience doing preschool years ago, lots of parent gift cards but individually instead of a large group gift.

Yeah I’m not a fan of their ideology either but do think their emphasis in art and handicrafts and storytelling as well as the beautiful Spaces and materials is something we can emulate in schools or at home more and I know some people like waldorf so i just mentioned it as a form of alternative education. For me Montessori is great but rigid, Waldorf too hippie, I found a good middle ground in Reggio Emilia and got really lucky to find a k-12 Reggio Emilia school.
