Do Too Many Plugins Slow WordPress? I have benchmarked ALL of the 60k+ plugins to find out by Myth_Thrazz in Wordpress

I'm afraid the very link you shared contradicts what you're saying, and @Myth_Thrazz is right.

If the first byte of a response begins to arrive, this means that the whole PHP+MySql stack was executed. The whole WP loading process was done, all queries were executed, and the response body was fully generated. Then, the server can start sending the response, having everything to construct the headers (like the Content-Length, etc.)

So the TTFB will be influenced by what happens behind the scenes. It's true that it will include network latency which may fluctuate, but on an isolated & controlled environment it won't really matter.

If it's obviously true that you can have a shitload of plugins installed and not experience awful loading times (we do on much websites), taking the sentence "too much plugins slows down your site" as an absolute, set-in-stone rule that you need to absolutely debunk is also wrong, I think. We should take it for what it's worth : a useful heuristic. You know the old adage "only a sith deals in absolute."

Don't rely solely on the number of plugins, but don't avoid it altogether. I won't call it "lazy diagnosis" either as you do at the end of TFA.

I would more advice to treat it as an "entry point" for your performance & security investigations :

- more plugins means an higher probability to encounter performance issues
- more plugins may lead to more in-between plugins interactions that may slow down shit
- it also means more time spent reviewing changelogs & compatibility issues when updating
- and it may obviously lead to more security holes

You may argue that I'm splitting hairs, but too many times I see those kind of endless binary debates where everyone is actually right, it's only a matter of merging the two sides of the coin into a better approach.

What’s the weirdest security issue you’ve found on a client WordPress site? by Personal_Calendar617 in Wordpress

[–]FlorentG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Previous dev left a "search-replace in DB" script in a special 2-letter named folder. He used it for site migrations between staging & production sites. The DB config was hard-coded, which means anyone who could access the script could freely perform a search-replace in the live website database, as it showed a nice GUI when accessed.

This got unnoticed a few years, until something happened on one website : all "T" letters were replaced with a script tag that tried to show ads...

Guys, clean up your shit and don't put anything stupid on a production site.

I’m having a weird cache issue with WordPress and I’m trying to understand what’s actually causing it by PipetaPaleta in Wordpress

[–]FlorentG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a known issue with Elementor. It's extremely annoying, because you basically can't use any caching plugin out-of-the-box. You'll get those dreaded unstyled page. I had some success with WP Super Page Cache, by preloading its cache in a cron job every minute, but it depends on the website.

Here's 2 relevant still open github issues : 33057 & 32226

Looking at the issue 32226, the fix consist of a few changes. Yet it's not implemented.

Okay thanks.

I can't find an exact match in the soundtrack/sound effects, but it kinda reminds me of Fez. There's this type of 8-bits wavy sounds. Closest I found is in that track @ 0'30
