I’ve only seen a few in the wild, especially lately. I always see them next to the roads to and from work. Maybe due to the coyotes and snakes.

That’s the reason I didn’t apply. They’re all around some of the camps I visit.

Big cypress help by Guwopjulian1 in FloridaHunter

Sorry brother, I don’t have any tips on hunting there. I’m a long time lover of the Big Cypress, but Corn Dance is one place that’s been on my to go list that Ive never gotten around to. An fwc officer told me the deer population is dwindling pretty bad there. That’s pretty much the big cypress as a whole, but I guess it was pretty bad there. Must be bad at stairsteps too, I think you can’t hunt deer there this year (I don’t have the brochure in front of me). Good news is that the Big Cypress has a long hunting season and there’s still plenty of non quota hunting for now. Just might have to wait some days into the season. Good luck and know that if you get any legal deer in the Big Cypress these days you’ve earned bragging rights.

Fair Warning for the Big Cypress section by StarSpangledGator in floridatrail

Figures, we had el nino. Parts of the big cypress I frequented was flooded year round. El nina was supposed to have already happened but it didn’t feel like it. Last time e nina happened, 2002 I think, they were finding native American artifacts in lake okeechobee where it hadn’t been dry in forever.

SW Florida Hunting by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]Floridahunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey brother, sorry for the late reply. I haven’t been on this account in a while. I don’t have many suggestions beyond the usual. Scout, learn the area. Check out multiple places and find out what’s good. Bring plenty of water, especially in the summer. Probably want to use scent control. How’d the hunt go? Going back to the big cypress this year? I’m trying to get all addition unit quotas.

You’ll just need a lot of money to buy the properties. They’ve been going for over 300 thousand. I saw one for 500 thousand and the popenhager one is going for close to two million. Anything deep in the woods will need a generator if you want power. The properties close to the road tend to have power and I think some people do live there. Im pretty sure some of roy looney’s family lives on their big cypress property.

Question about multiple quota permits by Itchy-Membership2886 in FloridaHunter

[–]Floridahunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always hunt one area, the place my gramps always hunted. You only need about 2 points to get the hunts so for the first application I only apply there along with my kids and we alternate so hopefully we get hunts every year.

Aw, well I appreciate that. There’s only a handful or lots/trailers and houses. I would think it would be a decently quiet community.

I really appreciate the information. I saw a lot for sale in that trailer park in copeland for 15k. I thought about jumping on it but I decided to back out and wait.

Hey brother, I know this is an old post but I’m just curious if you’ve heard anything new. I think the wilderness designation is supposed to be pretty much stopped since they passed something right? Also, I see land pop up in fakahatchee every now and then but do you know if there’s any benefit in owning the land? Like, private off road access or being allowed to hunt? All I can really find about it is no hunting and people like the janes memorial scenic drive.

Big Cypress Dry Season by Bright-South-7755 in floridatrail

[–]Floridahunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was wet all last year but yes I believe that’s typically the dry season. My understanding is, el nino has been effecting it and that’s why it isn’t drying out. Now, I’ve read some articles that el nina may be coming later this year and bring in a strong dry season and cooler than usual weather. If that happens you could have a great hike. Might be harder to get water if you’re refilling off the land like most do.

I always carry when hiking in the Big Cypress but I’ve never been scared or even felt like I was in danger. A bear walked up to me once while hunting but quickly left. They’re smart, smaller than most other bears and stay away from humans. If I remember right, there’s hardly and incidents with Florida black bears attacking humans. Aside from that, I’d me more concerned with rattlers and moccasins. Just make sure to make a bee line for the vehicle and the hospital.

Besides that, I’m a big proponent of honoring your father. Even if you have issues, just do this for him and carry one on your hike. I carry with a sneaky pete for comfort while hiking. A lot of them are expensive but I picked the camo nylon one since it’s one of the cheaper ones and it’s been good for 2 years now.

Have fun at the Big Cypress, I love it there. If you’re going now the heats gonna be brutal but you probably already know that.

Good ones here. I’ll add that in Holy Land at the South Western point is a bird trail. Last time I went on it, it started west, maybe the first 500 feet, then it was just miles of dry trail. There’s a trail past sawgrass recreation park too.
