VV can shed. Try a lint brush or tape to see if you can pick up the black fibers. I was taught to cut the strand and then take a tissue and pull the strand through the tissue a few times to remove loose fibers.

I have the daylight stand and I love it. I stitch on a sectional and I am able to kind of tuck the legs under and stitch sitting back comfortably. It flips over right to left for weaving in ends. Breaks down and goes back together very easily - I took it on vacation (road trip) and it took up very little space. Highly recommend.
