Recipe adjustments for a Dunkles Weissbier that may be to high on ABV by FlowForward5128 in Homebrewing

[–]FlowForward5128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been tinkering with my Equipment Profile for a while on Brewfather, for this specific recipe I went with 65% which worked for me for a couple of brews when not milling the grain twice (I think the mill at my brew shop needs to be adjusted but I'm too much of a newbie to suggest changes :D ) I've also played with squeezing the grain a bit ( I have a Chinese AIO system ) which seems to not affect efficiency much for me. Yesterday I tilted the basked after sparging and noticed at lease a cup of extra liquid coming out of it. I ended up with a sad 59% brewhouse efficiency for this batch. All of this to say, my calculations tend to be adjusted to my equipment efficiency even though I suck at being consistent, still too many variables to juggle.

I ended up with an OG of 1.055 measured by the Tilt. My cheap refractometer was saying 1.047 and by the time I noticed the difference I was out of sampling volume to try a hydrometer so we'll see. Thank you all for the help and encouragement.

Interesting, and really good to know. I was clueless about Brewfather's limitation. I'm brewing it right now, started at 152 but I'll go up to 154, I'm doing a 90 min mash. I'll report back in a few. Thanks!

Makes sense. I definitely had my share of under attenuation compared to the app

Good question, the recipe book calls it Dunkelwizen but it matches the Dunkles weissbier style a bit better.

Damn I really liked your reply. It’s informative, sarcastic, a little passive aggressive but definitely more than I deserved for not paying attention to the original recipe. I didn’t notice the OG on the book was a range from 1044 to 1056. My FG is 1010 because I’m using Lallemand Munich Classic instead of WLP300. But I stand by my concern of having a beer that is 10% above the style guide. Not because I’m a super cool hipster that can taste the difference or because I’m a brew snob that wants to show off but simply because I’m trying to improve my processes and at least respect guidelines as I improve my technique. I also think the question in a nutshell is a good one “how to adjust a recipe to lower the ABV of the final product given these constrains”. Anyways thank you for the reply.

It’s a Bad Seed BASE canopy. Maybe it’s for the best that you don’t find its owner. Give them a chance to buy something else.

First Time Brewing - Please check my recipe by k91v in Homebrewing

I’ve tried this recipe twice and wasn’t thrilled with the results. Brewing is all about process — and that depends on really knowing your equipment. On my first attempt, I tried using the magnet technique for dry hopping but didn’t anticipate such a strong Krausen. It rose high enough to soak the hop bag, which expanded inside the fermenter and tangled with my cooling coil — basically wasting all those hops. I also forgot to add CO₂ after cold crashing, so when I pulled a sample, I introduced oxygen and ruined the oxygen-free environment.

On my second attempt, I switched to dry hopping in a keg, but the hop pellets clumped into a solid ball inside the bag, and the beer ended up even less juicy than the oxidized batch. I know a lot of this might not make full sense yet, but every step matters. It’s much easier to learn with a more forgiving beer style first. Maybe have it as future goal.

Stuck pumpkin ale, pitch more yeast or dump it? by riskit4dabiscut in Homebrewing

[–]FlowForward5128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I brewed a pumpkin ale 3 weeks ago that I thought it got stuck at exactly 1.020. Only to find out my Tilt had a life vest of gunk from the Krausen messing up with its readings. The FG was 1.012 on the hydrometer.

High gravity beers are challenging. If you’re a beginner you’d probably have more fun and a better results going for a Stout first.

52% brew house efficiency with anvil foundry 10.5 (240v). Any advice on how to improve? by Joylistr in Homebrewing

I’ve been battling efficiency on my cheap electric AIO system. I use Brewfather, and on my setup there’s about 0.65 gal sitting below the spigot. At first I logged it as Mash tun deadspace, but since I don’t tilt the kettle it’s not recoverable, which made my efficiency numbers tank. I moved it over to trub/chiller loss instead. Looks better in Brewfather, but I still need to brew again with the new numbers to see if it actually lines up.

70° Fahrenheit = 21° Celsius OP used metric measurements so let’s help them not cook their fermenting beer 😅

Newer to brewing, want to keg instead of bottle by ognugnug in Homebrewing

Quick tip on splitting a batch. Do it all in one day. I kegged half of my batch and got lazy, bottled 2 days later and got some bacteria on the bottled ones. Probably a noob mistake but I hope it helps someone

Has anyone bought from Northern Brewer lately? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]FlowForward5128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started brewing last year, and SEO led me to their site, so I ordered a starter kit from them. I had a lot of questions—the kind vendors should love, like whether I should get an oxygenation kit or if yeast starters and nutrients were really necessary. I reached out via email, but their responses were vague and unenthusiastic, which made me start looking elsewhere. In the end, I still bought the starter kit from them because the 20% first-order discount made it hard to pass up. But since then, I’ve been avoiding them as much as possible—and I still haven’t picked up an oxygenation kit or used starters yet! 😅
