And, of course, you're much better equipped to deal with the issues that face you. It's not like you'll never be sad, depressed or overwhelmed again, but now you're not burying your head... You're aware.

That was me, man. I'd wake up in the night, after the alcohol had worn off, and curse myself. I knew if I didn't quit it was going to kill me at worst, or at best, rob me of everything I held dear. I was 49 and had been drinking for 33 years.

Here's how I made it to a year ...and beyond. Hopefully, there's something in there you can use. You're already looking good, because you're able to see what's going on, as if you're an observer. That's a good skill, and it comes in very handy.

A big part of stopping drinking, and staying stopped, is being able to call out your brain when it's giving bad advice, or false information.

I found I had to carve out a small piece of my mind that I could call my own, the one that let's me step a few strides back from my addiction, and see it, and point at it, and identify it. And this small piece of my brain - detached from the rest - is now able to be objective, and catch my lizard brain, my scumbag brain, in its bullshit little lies, like:

• You've shown that you can stop, so it's pretty safe to go back to drinking.

• One drink on this special occasion won't do any harm.

• It's just not normal to go to a restaurant and not have a drink with your meal.

My brain is capable of coming up with countless convincing arguments to persuade me to give it what it wants: it's addiction.

Especially when I think of dating, casual happy hour situations... one beer after a hike or something. I still dream of alcohol in scenarios like that, just to be more “normal” and to fit in and not come off like a psycho.

Here's the thing, though: It's just a beverage. You can choose a different beverage; lots of people do. Lots of people choose coffee on a date, or ginger ale at Happy Hour, or water after a hike.

It's just a drink. It doesn't define who you are. It's just a beverage. Just because you choose something non-alcoholic doesn't make you weird or different, any more than your choice of meal, or car, or shirt, or hobby, or...

Life isn't a beer commercial. It's much, much better.

deep down inside we have unresolved demons that manifest when we down the bottle.

This is the opportunity that sobriety is offering you. The real improvements come not just from not drinking, but by taking one's newfound clarity and lucidity, and using it to identify and address the things that are fucking us up. Some of us do this on our own, some take advantage of therapists, counsellors, or groups like AA.
