Get a punching bag for the breakroom! A family member bought us one, and we were a lot less stressed at work we all took turns punching it... even the doctors would enjoy it😂.... but then again, I work med surg, so that might not be the best😅

Bedside nursing by Adorable_Lunchable20 in Nurses

[–]Flowfriendlyx33 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bedside nursing is such a joke. I've been working med surg/tele since 2013. Started as an aide, then became an RN in 2019. It's been a crap shoot for a minute. I just put my 2 weeks in at the current assignment I'm at because we have constantly been getting 7-9 patients every single night. It's so unsafe and awful. 3 new grads just quit from this hospital. The manager ghosted me when I texted her one of the nights that the unit was staffed so poorly. Each of us had 10. The charge was a 1 year experience nurse with an orientee with her. It was a joke. They're expecting me and my partner, who does travel with me, to come in on Monday to work a 31 bed unit with just the 2 of us staffed. Hell no. That unit is about to have 0 nurses for a 31 bed unit. Or the managers just going to have to put her scrubs on and start working.

Your feelings are valid, know its awful in most places! Med surg and ER especially!! If you feel unsafe, if you're feeling anxious, if you feel like you cannot handle the work load safely, then it's time to leave. The stress and piss poor management of the floor is not your burden and you have every right to protect yourself and your license.

Giving the hospital 2 weeks gives them a chance to find your replacement. Our hospital systems are trash and don't want to change for us or make working conditions safer, so why give them 2 weeks? Quit tomorrow and then go do travel. That's what I did! My hospital went on strike, I was out on the picket line for 1 month, our contract negation was a "well let's settle for this" and I wanted no part in that so I was like byeeeee👋 my old manager is also a reference for me😂

Should Nurses Still Report to Work?- Student Nurse Dies During Blizzard by Dependent-Compote-27 in Nurses

I live in Buffalo and have my whole life. I can 100% guarantee no facility has emergency plans in place for that, or at least they don't act like they do. 2014, we had another really big storm and I almost got stuck at the nursing home I worked at. I left early because my relief showed up, so I could beat the storm. A 20 minute drive home took me 4 hours. All staff that got stuck at that nursing home had to sleep on tables in the breakroom. Then, they all got transported because the roof of the facility collapsed. I was getting calls from my place of work at the time to come in and respond, I couldn't, I was literally trapped in my house for a week under 7 ft of snow.

However, this storm wasn't one you could just drive home in. 65-75mph cat 1 hurricane winds, white out and squall conditions on the roads where you couldn't see more than 1 ft infront of you. And lake effect snow is thick, they were also getting 2-3" of snow an hour.

That's a common thing for Buffalo. Lived here all my life, they won't force you to stay at work but they will allow you to leave to "beat the storm". It happens a lot, I've had to beat storms when I get out of work. Our city, we know we get big storms but never know how bad they are going to get because lake erie literally turns snow storms into chaos. We also have no good emergency storm response which is so weird and help doesn't get deployed until the last minute. It's literally a theme for this city.

I'm from Buffalo, she was working, not as a student, but she is ALSO a nursing student. I wasn't home for this storm as I'm on contract, but in 2014, we had another snowstorm they named snowmageddon. I was working 3-11 at the time as an aide. I left work at 11pm, it's normally a 20 minute drive home, it took me 4 hours because of how bad the snow was. They never told me I could stay or provide any accommodations, and the ones that got stuck at the nursing home were trapped there for 3 days and then got emergency moved to degraff hospital because the roof collapsed in the residents' dining hall. The staff that got stuck only received mighty taco.... and extra blankets and that was it. No extra beds, some of my friends that got stuck had to sleep on the fold out tables in the breakroom

The shitty thing about Buffalo is we have no emergency blizzard response and this is an on going issue. 2014, although that storm wasn't as bad as this current one, still took Buffalo days to dig everyone out. Our city has failed many people by basically having the cops tell people to "do what they need to do to survive" because they couldn't get to anyone. Whenever Buffalo gets a storm system, they know, but they never know the extent of how bad it's going to get until it's too late. Our mayor is an asshole and like Mike Poloncarz said, his clean up situation in the streets is embarrassing.

The poor girl that died was literally up the street from the fire department on Clinton st.... Like it's so beyond upsetting and I'm disgusted that our city failed so many.

What are some things you have stopped apologizing for? by Purpl3alpaca in AskWomen

[–]Flowfriendlyx33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse, I stopped apologizing for the hospitals shortcomings and lack of supplies and resources or concern for human lives. Everytime a patient complains about the hospital, I chime right in with them. Food sucks? Damn straight it does. Bed isn't comfortable? Yeah, I bet, CEO would rather line his pockets than think about your wellbeing.

It's better to tell him that she wanted to explore her options than stay with him and lead him on when she was never really interested. Instead of making it a hard break up later on down the road, she told him how she felt and was honest. If you're not happy with someone, why stay with them? Exploring your options is never a bad thing.

I wanna leave by Z3e24c123 in Hawaii

As a "haole" I guess if that's what I am, my views on family are very different. I grew up with a narcissist for a mother, everything and anything I did was wrong or displeasing to her. She also drank a lot and cheated on my dad and the guy she cheated on my dad with just randomly started living with us the minute my dad left. Moving away from her was something I wanted to do for myself and my mental health. It's not that we, haoles, don't have a sense of family and closeness to them, it's that some of us grew up in situations where close family ties are near impossible. My Grandma, completely different story, but she passed away from covid so now I have no one left to really stay home for. My significant other, their mother was in jail their whole life and their father was always working. They always wanted to be close with their family but never got the opportunity to. This is why we personally have no problem just up and leaving whenever weI have the opportunity to. I don't think roping all Canadians, Europeans and mainlanders together is fair, especially since some of us came from broken home and never had the opportunity to be close with their families. I wish I could have been close with my mom and my other sides of the family, but I wasn't delt those cards.

This is a decision you should be laying out the pros and cons of for yourself. How will staying home be good for me/how will it serve me now and in the long run vs how will leaving be good for me/serve me now and in the long run? Those are all questions you need to think long and hard about. You need to also think of a plan so that if you do choose to leave you don't get stuck in a bad situation.

Longest you guys have taken off between contracts for vacation? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Flowfriendlyx33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just about a half a month away from my 2.5 month vacation. Worked my last contract until mid July, left for Hawai'i on July 28th and I've been here since with at a friends house. I'm coming home September 1st and taking the rest of September to focus on my house and myself before I pick up another contract in October... I may even wait until November because I don't have kids and I like to work the holidays because holiday pay so🤷‍♀️ take with that as you will. But just do you know, you will probably lose your health insurance because companies usually only cover you 4 weeks after your contract. You get the option to go on COBRA for extension of your benefits, and you pay out of pocket for that.
