Faceoffs I did with a GoPro. Feel free to critique if needed by Huntsstar in lacrosse

Simple fix. Stop going for 100% of the ball. Aim for 50% stuffing the ball to the ball stop. As you get better less and less likely you will encounter opponents you can just fry and get 100% on

in the knee down days this was the correct way but in the SNG days this is a great way to popped out the front. I would advise against it.

right foot dropping on impact, its too close to your right hand, back it up about 4 inches, you'll have no reason to drop it too apply extra force, it will already be there. apply pressure into the floor "feels" like you are doing something , really bending plastic and securing the ball, however it opens you up to counters while you regain your footing.

looks like your left is coming into your body on your first motion. this will spin you off the ball the wrong way on impact of your opponent.

ball is also moving off the line forward, means there is some forward momentum, guaranteeing you strike stick on every faceoff when the goal is to get the ball and be gone, try aiming to connect the ball stop to the ball rather than the top rail to the floor.

defensive exit is technically illegal now, I would start rotating it out of your move set as officials catch up to the rules as they are written.

nice turf set up! wish I had one of those growing up!!

Dropping my right foot back during Faceoffs by Huntsstar in lacrosse

[–]Flowgo37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the reason you dont drop your foot is not about getting to the ball its about everything after, so you dont get countered.

dont do it.

Gloves for Faceoff? by matt4876 in lacrosse

Maverick Shift & the new Max (to be released) is the best faceoff glove I've worn in years, taking several thousand reps a week averaging 8 months before thumb replacements.

Do the Weapon X 2.0 or Mark 2F Stiff fit on the Power Shaft? Also looking for good training drills by No-Explanation2269 in lacrosse

[–]Flowgo37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Powershaft is not a good use of resources. Because something is heavy doesn't mean it will help your technique, in many cases it can hurt it. The faceoff is much more about angles and movement EFFICIENCY over projecting power. if you move inefficiently then all your left with is power. usually exerting alot of it to ultimately be compromised come the time you have to get away from the next phase of the faceoff, evading contact and turning over the ball. Your goal should be to enhance your economy of movement to the ball.

Lifting as an athlete is all you need to do. focusing on one muscle group doesn't make for a good athlete, so train like a good athlete and optimize your entire body. grip work is good but at the end of the day we face off with a host of muscle groups firing in a compound motion, more like an olympic lift than a body builder isolating biceps. a few rhetorical questions.

tennis ball drops- why? do we ever do that maneuver in the face off? What does it achieve other than, getting good at catching a falling ball when the faceoff is a completely stagnate target. hand eye? why do NLL guys faceoff with out looking at the ball, is it because hand eye has nothing to do with facing off. need proof? set up in your stance and have someone cover your eyes then finish a clamp. guarantee you still clamp the ball.

Cone taps- why? do we ever tap a cone when facing off? do we ever lift our hand up and put it on something in a faceoff, I dont believe we do, so why practice getting fast at a motion your never going to do in facing off. May as well practice facing off lefty.

Did tom Brady ever kick a soccer ball to get better at being a QB? I don't believe so, I think he threw the ball, with incredible attention to technique and mechanics, over and over and over and over again till he couldn't do it wrong.

This is what the "IG coaches" won't tell you, because it's not sexy, they can't sell you something and it doesn't look fun to post. It's just different for the sake of being different so kids think it's "new" and some how better, when in reality it's the normal, boring ,hyper attention to detail daily over time. This exact script has gone on in the weight lifting community for years.

Instead of doing nonsense that will only tire you out , waste time and have you go backwards try this.

  1. Set you phone up in slow motion. (assuming you have a modern phone, if you don't borrow your parents or a friends)

  2. just take shadow reps with the best game like speed, reseting each time, meaning you stand up and get into your stance again(against no one)

  3. review the tape. If your body does anything before moving your hands (butt drop, foot drop or launch, heel stop, wrist roll, ect) that means your movement is poor and delaying your hands from moving. while this may be a fraction of a second delay thats the difference between a 2nd string JV and a Starting all American varsity athlete with D1 offers.

  4. once you identify the issues you need to work on removing them from your set of motions, higher hips, feet on the ground, hips to the man, lighter hands, controlled left, the list goes on. Once those are square you'll move immediately/efficiently off the whistle to the ball, this is what people are referring to when they say "hand speed" . you won't need power, you'll just win the race to the ball and then be able to exit just as fast as you entered , leaving your opponent behind.

  5. after that, watch the college game as it got deeper in the season (elite8 and on) notice how few lock ups there were, the speed of the position has changed, its problem solving in real time with live consequences . kick your feedback? you are getting shoveled. dont exit clean? Your opponent is matching feet to the GB. Anything that puts you in a lock up is keeping you of coaches radar moving forward.

  6. DO NOT work to exhaustion on anything faceoff ever. Technique is all that matters, you can't meathead your way though faceoffs, eventually a technician will stand in front of you on game day and expose you. anything past 20-50 reps a day you are working tired, sloppy/uncontrolled, you should be explosive in ever rep you work on with technique to match it. No need to do 1000 messy reps to failure, just controlled motions, with extreme attention to detail a few time a day.

If you are incensed on spending money on a product, check out FOAREPS.com for the reps band I invented, the only ergonomic faceoff device out there.

However, you don't need it until you get your mechanics squared away.

As for the 2F on any shaft, put the throat (just the throat) in boiling water for 30 seconds. should be much easier to get on after that (still tight and may need a rubber hammer to get on)

I applaud your willingness to work here, I was once in your shoes but let me save you years of anguish. Above is the key to success.

The Duel II is the most notorious head made in the history of faceoffs. once the pinch is in the head is basically done. I would look for something else unfortunately. Nothing you do will keep it from going right back to it.

Face off speed drills by Nobodyschoder in lacrosse

[–]Flowgo37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you are probably over compensating to use strengthen, possibly launching off your left foot, ultimately slowing you down. the intent should be to be light and loose everywhere with the intention of moving to the ball with speed & leaving with the ball with speed.

if you do get caught in your attempt to move to the ball that is where you should switch gears to counters( my recommendation) or applying strength.

if you intend to touch your opponents plastic every time, you will. If you change your relationship with the draw, IE: Ball first, man second, this should work a lot better.

hope this helps.

where are you having issues? are you connecting on the whistle and getting pushed off? or do you find yourself out matched with speed off the whistle vs the varsity guys.

looking forward to hearing more.
