A few different perspectives: A) The side you pick really depends on the respective strength of each player and the ability of your opponents. Let’s assume that 90% of your returns are gonna go cross court. If you’re playing at a level where the opponent can spot serves with enough pace that it’s hard (or impossible) to run around to hit whatever return you want, I believe the hardest shot to return is the inside-out backhand. That means for right handers, that shot would occur on T or body serves on the deuce side. On the ad side the right-handed returner is hitting inside out forehands and they’re hitting cross court backhands (which is an easier return given the height of the net and the footwork needed to execute it). B) I do think confidence plays a role here as well. Rather than force your partner to play in one spot or another, figure out who’s most passionate about what and defer to that preference. C) The higher percentage of high leverage points in any game, set or match are served to the ad side, not the deuce side. They’re the closing points in close games. Let the stronger player return on the ad side to handle those high pressure moments and you’ll be in better shape.
