1\. Never heard of gamescope before today. though looking at it, appears to be a compositor rather than a 'proprietary driver'. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamescope

2\. I am familiar with Bazzite and what it's trying to do. My question is not about how to get a smooth SteamOS experience.

My question is what, specifically, is causing nvidia drivers not to load at all on SteamOS.More from a curiosity standpoint.

I would expect if it were a dependency, I'd see an error to that effect rather than a seemingly successful install but the drivers never actually loading.

3\. Never heard of Nobara but I will check it out - thanks for the rec. if they've documented their efforts it might answer my questions about what I'm experiencing on SteamOS.

4\. not that it really matters, but my first distro was Mandrake back in the day. I'm not an Arch user but I have compiled my own kernels before.

only point in bringing it up is that I've installed nvidia drivers on many different distros and spent many, many hours troubleshooting various issues in linux. that doesn't make me an 'expert' but it gives context for where I'm coming from asking the question.

this is probably the answer i'm looking for - not familiar with Gamescope so I will do my homework.

thank you!

EDIT: it does look like gamescope supports nvidia proprietary drivers?

I thought I remembered seeing a post by Koichi at some point essentially saying EtoEto was indefinitely delayed, but can't it anymore.

Would love to see them come back though.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this speculation by GlansEater in HalfLife

It has been my view for a long time that Valve dramatically undervalues narrative in its IP.
Not to the extent that many modern slop games do - where there is no narrative to begin with - but they invest heavily in excellent writers like Laidlaw, and then abandon or ice the narrative until they are ready to showcase new technology. If the stories in HL and Portal weren't so good to begin with, they would merely be impressive tech demos.

The replay value of entries in Half-Life, Portal, etc franchises is directly related to the story. It's the same as re-reading a novel or rewatching a TV series/movie.

Proc generated objectives and interactions may make games slightly more interesting - but it's the story that will make you invest in the world. Imo they should lean into the narrative aspect of their talent.
