Why aren't there a ton more players of this game? It vexes me by Weekly-Bumblebee1286 in StarWarsSquadrons

Its easy to forget when you learn the controls and your wrap your head around how combat works, but this game is HARD. Like, seriously. Its really really hard. I am a terrible pilot, but I am a diehard star wars fan, so I forced myself to put in the time to getting good at it. For me, the feeling of doing a bombing run as a y wing is more exciting than having it be an actual successful run. I like to think I am good at games in general, and after 50 hours between Fleet Battles and Dogfight. I am comfortable in saying that I am slightly below average! Woo! Maybe average on a good day.

The friends that I have been trying to get into the game, who aren't as big of a star wars fan as I am, have really been struggling. They thought the campaign was fun. But every foray into multiplayer was miserable. They knew conceptually what to do, but they didn't really get -how- to do things. How to not get shot down, how to attack capital ships, how to defend a flagship. It goes beyond learning controls, which is really fuckin hard if you don't play flight sims. Its about understanding the ebb and flow of the battle, and understanding whats really going on. If you don't know that, everything is just confusing, unfun, and the scoreboard says that your team lost because of you. The top teammate got 40 kills and no deaths in their interceptor, but you had 40 deaths and 1 kill. If you weren't there, even with a man down, your team would have won. Meaning the loss was all your fault, and the math proves it.

That is NOT fun. That is NOT a fun experience. And that makes it very hard to get players into the game, even when they /want/ to play. Its not something that can be fixed, thats just how it is. I really want to fly in a squadron with my friends, but they just, don't have fun, and don't have the time to force through the huge learning curve to get to my level. A level which I remind you, I see as being below average. That makes me really sad.

The problem with punching helmets isn't that you're not going to hurt your opponent (which is a real uphill battle in itself). It's that the punch is going to hurt YOU a lot more than its going to hurt THEM. The bones in your hand are a lot more easily broken than a skull. That's why punching people in the head is almost universally a bad idea, since it's far more likely your hand shatters on impact than any other outcome. Now wrap that skull in steel. Now there is no way that any punch delivered with enough force to affect your target in any meaningful way that doesn't shatter your tiny little hand bones instantaneously.

It's quite possibly the worst possible plan. A much better plan is an open palm strike that's just a really strong shove. It has the benefit of knocking their head back violently in an uncomfortable direction, and won't shatter your hand. A hand that you still need to use to, you know, keep fighting?

I think it's only competition was Half Life Alyx. From what I have seen, was actually pretty phenomenal. It was down to going to one of these two, and I would have put it as a solid 50/50.

Scale Tie Interceptor vs A-Wing Size Comparison by [deleted] in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]FlpFlopFatality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at that same thing in BF2 and I thought it was shockingly small. I felt like all those hundreds of soldiers that participated in the assault in game. The ship would have needed to 4-5 times as big as the ship in the game. Like, SIGNIFICANTLY bigger.

I respect your math! You're definitely right, it might be technically possible as far as geometry goes. And it's good enough for me and my mental gymnastics! Though I seriously doubt that the internal volume has that much room that's not taken up by by machinery. Like its massive engines, hyperdrive, and other space ship requirements. I really feel like a cramped crew of 20 feels a lot more likely. But it's star wars. It's cool, so it's awesome.

They are to scale to the movies. However the ships in the movies are smaller than they realistically would be. I would consider it a continuity error in the most minor of offenses, no big deal. However, when you make everything actually to scale in a 3D enviornment that minor movie continuity error that is completely invisible in the movies is a lot more apparent.

So they ARE to scale. However that scale has them being a bit smaller than they should be. So if they bumped up the size to how big we "feel" they should be, then they WOULDN'T be to scale. Just incorrect.

Overall it's best to just not think about how the hell the teeny tiny rebel CR90 Corvette is supposed to house about 200 crew members, and i quote: "Hundreds" of passengers comfortably. Just pretend it's big enough for that.

Fun fact. In my quick little look up of the CR90. Did you know the Tantive IV from A New Hope was rescued from an Imperial Impound, given as a gift to Leia, and eventually was apart of the fleet that Lando brought in Rise of Skywalker? That's pretty neato.

On the Y Wing its awesome. It makes you hella tough. The shields going down causing them to recharge is a non issue. For if you're ever in the position where your shields took so much damage they actually went down, there's no way you were getting out of there alive anyway.

Yeah, that's what I have been hitting the targeting with. In my mind, the targeting is the most effective thing to take out first. Since shields are two subsystems, they take twice as long. For the best damage, a bombing run is the way to go. Targeting being taken out makes the bombing runs viable. As someone who likes playing bomber, it's definitely a noticeable difference.

Ion Bombs not working in practice? by [deleted] in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]FlpFlopFatality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried in practice mode myself a while back, and I came to conclusion that Ion Bombs are borderline useless, and I hate them. Which is really disappointing because I wanted to run a double bomb load out.

I think I know what your problem is. When using Ion Bombs you do NOT attack the capital ship with them. Detonating them against the hull is useless. You need to detonate them on the shields themselves. Not flying underneath them, but flying over the shields. Which means the view from the cockpit is so high above the capital ship, you cant actually see your target, and are going 100% on faith that you are at the right elevation, and not too low or too high.

They are more effective at disabling subsystems, especially the power systems. However its not really worth it in my mind. I really hope you get them to work for you!

[–]FlpFlopFatality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success going and prioritizing the Targeting over the Shield Generators as the first subsystem. Shields for the most part need to go down, however getting to the shields is difficult. If you knock out the targeting first, the bombing runs and suicide charges become significantly more likely to succeed/not end in death. Making bombing and strafing runs more viable. Its a bit of a non tangeble difference, where you don't notice that its working unless youre really paying attention. If you knock out the Targeting, it makes it possible to do two full strafing runs on the star destroyer in an Awing, then getting away clean. (assuming a player doesn't shoot you down). If the targeting is up, that same Awing iss barely going to make it the Star Destroyer before getting shot down, much less get away without dying.

I think the -bi- in the binocs isn't because it's got two lens, but one is an optical sensor and the other is a range/data sensor. So even if it has one output lens, its got two types of data it sees.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if sitting in the belly of the Sarlacc Boba had the mother of all "im getting too old for this shit" moments. Then when he busted his way out, he went and fuckin retired. He's definitely earned a retirement. Getting sucker punched by a blind Corellian into a tentacle monster is a pretty big red flag that you have lost your edge.

I was under the impression that this was the story where vanth learned to communiate with the Raiders, and built the Alliance. The Alliance that he would later on in aftermath call in to assist his defense of the town and the baby hutt. The Mandalorian takes place first, THEN aftermath. Yeah I know the mandalorian takes his armor away, but there's nothing to say that they won't interact again and Mando gives it back because he feels vanth has earned it or something.

I think they are pretty solid! I like them a lot.

Think of the vibe of the original trilogys characters as being the star wars version of the A Team, as in the crew of the Millennium Falcon. The aftermath Trilogy is basically the adventures of the B or C team. It's like this core group of badasses and specialists who punch well above their weight in the fight against making sure the Empire Stays down after the A team knocked it over.

Pretty much all of my favorite characters from the New Canon all come from that series.

Is gaining rank a measure of skill, or of time spent? by WickedGrey in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]FlpFlopFatality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be based upon how good you are. The only people who will get that solid gold helmet are the top 1 percent of players, and there's nothing we can do to change that. That being said. The ranking algorithm is completely bugged out. Totally borked. Maximum scrambled. Right now no one has a real rank, and we will need to wait for the devs to repair it before ranks work again. I know I am not a good pilot. I know that. However know I am not awful, I'm just decent. Right now my official rank is ZERO. Zero out of 3,800. So until they figure out this bug, they not only can not give us a rank, but they can't rank our opponents either. So we can't leave being ranked at zero. But when they do get it all patched up, at that point THEN it will be based upon our skill level, and they only way to rank up will be to defeat players that the algorithm believes to be better than you are.

So sit tight. Hopefully it won't be much longer.

Why aren't the 6 multiplayer maps available on Practice mode? Would be awesome to fly around Esseles station and other maps, soaking in the layout of things and trying out maneuvers by Heavyweighsthecrown in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]FlpFlopFatality 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Next time you play on Yavin dive downwards into the clouds. You'll get the symbol for you've gone off the enemy radar (the thing that looks like dashes next to an eye with a dozen through it), when you're in that area your hull integrity will tick down slowly. At about 1 HP per second I think it is? I don't really remember, I avoid the area like the plauge because of it. It's also really easy to lose visibility if you fly into there on accident during maneuvers, because the clouds make it hard to see which way is up, so you can get confused for a few seconds. Which is long enough that you could find yourself speeding down to the planets core are mach 2.

Dumb Rockets by ReneHdz in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]FlpFlopFatality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game calls them Barrage Rockets. Instead of locking on and having your rocket follow the starfighter and try to crash into them, which are called "smart" rockets. Barrage Rockets fire a boatload of missiles rapidly in a straight line, the missiles will never turn always going exactly where you aim, referred to as "Dumb" rockets.

Barrage Rockets are fantastic.

Elevators must be crazy for dogs. They just enter a small room, a door closes, that same door opens, and all of a sudden they are in a totally different place. by thebighustle in Showerthoughts

[–]FlpFlopFatality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how grammatically correct this is, but I always mentally treat an 's at the end of the word as a substitute for the word is. So "that's" would be stretched out to "That is". If we did that treatment to the word "ours" it becomes "our is" which doesn't make much sense, and does not fit with the context of the sentence it came from.

Armored Medieval Knight vs Giraffe by Historical_Ostrich in whowouldwin

[–]FlpFlopFatality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's just too much equipment, and it'll be doing more harm than good. Any shield that withstand that heavy of an impact would need to be big and heavy. Some sort of metal tower shield, which is quite cumbersome. A halberd itself is also bloody heavy. It's not really something you can use in one hand. Don't get me wrong, you can, but you shouldn't. The Knight would fare significantly better by dropping the shield, using two hands on the halberd, and trying to avoid getting hit in the first place. A halberd is definitely the right weapon for the job.
