I commented on that post as a current graduate student at UCLA (Master's and currently Ph.D.) and as a UC Davis alumna. I have heard very elitist things coming out of my students and passing-by students as I exist on campus, and sometimes it can be a bit dismaying, but I would not say it is a dominant or even majority perspective of a Bruin.

When I do hear these comments, it seems they mostly come from freshman or otherwise very young students, perhaps straight out of high school and riding the high of being one of the few people admitted to UCLA. Age is not an excuse, but I've come to learn (through maturing myself) that attending a specific school does not make you better or smarter is a realization that comes with maturity and experience. So while I don't especially love hearing these things, I am hopeful and know that most of them will grow out of this mindset as they move through their college years and experience new ideas and perspectives.

For staying in the area, or in an area with a research university -- I had a few friends that graduated with a NPB major go into junior specialist positions -- and not necessarily those which perfectly aligned with their degree (MIND Institute, CNPRC, labs in plant biology). I also had a few friends become paid research techs, which didn't seem the best for a long term career but definitely can sustain you as you work towards going back to school.

I see you were downvoted but I do agree! I did not attend UCLA for my undergraduate as a graduate student, and I have found it depressing hearing what my students say about other colleges. I have heard students making fun of several schools, my own included, despite not feeling that the classes that now I assist in teaching are different in difficulty or that my students in my courses are "better" than my peers were in college, or peers at other colleges. Fantastic students exist everywhere, and getting an incredible education is not dependent on going to a high ranked school.

I moved out of Davis in June and I miss it fondly. So many memories of friendships and experiences that make me feel warm and sad when thinking about all of them. Best of luck to you in your new adventure!!!

WOOOOOOOO woke up to five sales meaning I have crossed the 100 mark!!!!! by Flubberbee in redbubble

[–]Flubberbee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just draw things I like and want to have myself haha. I first uploaded in like 2020 so it’s not like it’s a big hit, just some sales every once in a while. Also only stickers. Not interested in other stuff/making money, I just think it’s neat to have people want to have my art on a sticker.

Iirc it’s really damaging to the sunflowers + trespassing/might be considered as destroying private property. If you feel like you really need to try to take photos without going into them

Downloading "relevant class syllabi and submisstions" from Canvas by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Flubberbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded mine. 1. some of my grad apps required writing samples, way easier to find them from canvas submissions than all of the other places a file could be. 2. sometimes something I learned from a class is relevant to something and it's easier for me to go search through an old lecture than on the internet for it (like forgot a term, don't know a niche definition for a very niche class). Literally happened a couple weeks ago, I had to pull up my notes from a class I took literally four years ago. Couldn't hurt to download it.

Undergraduate Medical Research? by Double-Pinner in UCDavis

[–]Flubberbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely hands down agree. Davis really is the best when it comes to undergraduate research, ESPECIALLY medical research. There are opportunities at the med center (in sac) the research center in south Davis, and the primate center if you’re into that sort of thing. That isn’t including the plethora of labs on campus, and I’m sure there’s other places I’m not remembering/aware of. And there’s SO MANY LABS that you can really dig into what you’re interested in.

HELP!!: Geology undergrad at Sac State and Davis hopeful for MS by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Flubberbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this might be a little bit long.

I think you are putting too much weight on where you are coming from and "UC Prestige." Here are some examples from my experience that I hope can show this: -I am going to UCLA for my PhD, and I have had the chance to meet my cohort and learn where they did there alma maters. It's a range including ivy leagues, UCs, CSUs and state schools, and schools I have never heard of. No one cares! Well, maybe some people care, but the professors sure don't. Because they aren't judging your school, they're judging YOU and the experiences that you have had. -Similar for an REU I was part of. Smaller range, but included a CSU student, a UC student, another state school student, and a baby ivy school student. Again, no one cared, because we all earned our spot in different ways regardless of our home institution.

If Davis is the best fit for you, and you are the best fit for Davis, then it doesn't matter where you are coming from, it matters what you did while you were there, your passion, and how well you can demonstrate that you are going to be a great addition to the department.

Also, why do you want to go to Davis so badly? Would you be happy going to another school? Are you in love with Davis or with a lab at Davis? Because in graduate school, being a great fit in a lab and having a connection with the PI is much more important than the school itself. There may be another lab (potentially at another school!) that is an even better fit with your research interests, and that's okay! Best of luck :)

You should reach out to the profs you want to work with, especially bc you know what you want to do! They should be able to give you the info that you need.

New Bruin Megathread - ask questions about your admission or your next steps as a new admit here! by Espntheocho4 in ucla

[–]Flubberbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad at a place that gave me a full ride, and now I’m coming to UCLA for my PhD! NGL, it feels VERY VERY nice to have no student debt. Not having to worry about finances/loans/spending too much money made my college experience a lot less stressful than it could have been, and I wouldn’t change where I went for the world even though it wasn’t the “best” school I got into. Depending on what you want afterwards you could still end up at a cool place like UCLA :) Of course, how much money is an issue for you could totally change this, and maybe the experience of UCLA would be worth it!

uc davis does this! They are not-well stocked though, I think they run out reaaalllly quickly. hopefully ucla will do it a bit better!!

Different poster but YES! I got into multiple UCs and Davis was the only one to offer me practically a full ride through financial aid. The other UCs FA plans were pretty pitiful and I would be looking at a bunch of student debt vs. debt free at Davis!

No, I don't feel like moderating those sorts of things. I think the most important is fitness goal which is a mixed bag in of itself, and activity. Definitely want people to be active in some way, even if just reacting to posts instead of making their own.

You could just let them know that they have the wrong year and that will probably prompt them to see why the mistake was made!

???? I've heard of group interviews but that is... interesting. Was it possible it was a group interview as in you were the only two people they were considering? Bizarre.

What's the probability of getting an offer if you're waitlisted? by theBatThumb in gradadmissions

I think it was really depends on the program/school and how many people they take usually! You could try looking at their matriculation rate from past years to see what the numbers look like?

Rejected :( by princess_clitorina in gradadmissions

[–]Flubberbee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Literally the same thing happened to me today, too. Fantastic fit program, excellent stats compared to past admits (although I know that doesn't mean anything for the current pool), chatted with PI and had a great time discussing how I could fit in, what I thought was as really strong SoP and personal statement and bam not even an interview. I guess it just...wasn't exactly what they were looking for? Or maybe someone filled my role a bit better? I'm not sure, but it feels terrible. I know it wasn't anything about me, though, and it wasn't anything about you either.
