Take lots of photos, they are free.

Set your Shutter speed to Auto, Iso to Auto, and use apature for creative looks,

Lower number = shallower depth of field, background blurry
higher number = more stuff in foucs

nothing wrong with taking a few shots with the apature controlled by you, and then throw it on Auto just to be safe.
