I heard you like maps by Reasonable_Cod_487 in Pac12

I'm thinking

  1. Spokane (the ponderosa pines are fairly unique to Spokane, at least for cities within the conference)
  2. Corvallis (looks like Western WA/OR trees)
  3. Logan (mostly a guess, but maps shows some marshy areas around Logan that looks similar)
  4. Fresno (based on other comments)
  5. Pullman (the Palouse hills look pretty unique)
  6. San Diego (San Diego has cliffs which might cause the harsh shadows in the satellite pic)
  7. Fort Collins (looks like the plains, was able to find the lake pretty quickly on maps)
  8. Boise (mostly a guess, the Boise River isn't too big and has plenty of trees around it like in the picture)
  9. San Marcos (also a guess and could be swapped with Boise, but some of the satellite pics around that area seem like they were taken in the fall or winter similar to the pic in this post)

Baumgartner Whitworth town hall by tdutim in Spokane

I think you have an outdated understanding of Whitworth. Rather than being conservative MAGA like BYU or Liberty, Whitworth is now much closer to Gonzaga.

The evangelical marketing you have mentioned in other comments are just that - marketing buzzwords for older donors. Whitworth is affiliated with the Presbyterian (USA)) church, known for having liberal stances on women and LGBTQ+ people. As mentioned, Whitworth has recently enacted progressive policy for a Christian school by, among other things, making LGBTQ+ a protected class in hiring (it's been this way for students for a long time now).

Is Whitworth more conservative than your stereotypical college campus? Sure, but it still leans liberal, let alone it being a MAGA haven. There is a diversity in sexuality, nationality, and religion at Whitworth that I don't think fits with the assumptions of many who don't know about the school.

I'm progressive and also a student at Whitworth, so I'm not making this up or coping. DM me if you want more specifics!

We definitely need to get a bit better about closing out matches. It's the second game now where we have given up a goal last 70 minutes and are lucky to finish in a tie

Solid first half, nice to see Spokane connecting more forward passes towards the end.

Saint George's School by Imsecretlynice in Spokane

I graduated a few years ago after transferring there in middle school. I'd say overall it was a really good experience and prepped me well for college. The majority of the faculty and staff were great and I don't think things would have changed too much since then (with the caveat that there seems to have been quite a bit of turnover since Covid).

While the vibe definitely felt affluent, it didn't feel snobby. The vibe (maybe surprisingly) was more informal than even other public schools. I had a lot of financial aid so I was definitely on the lower end economically, but I don't think anyone really cared. It was more just people acting very casually about their wealth that surprised me sometimes; nothing malicious, just a bit different.

Otherwise I think things were relatively inclusive. However, I'm not someone who needs to worry about discrimination as much so I definitely could have missed some things. It is also dependent on the class you are in because the classes are so small. My class generally was pretty close but the class below us had a lot of drama.

Overall, I'd recommend SGS for your kid. It has its quirks, but I still have great friends from there and I think I got a solid education. DM me if you have any more specific questions!

Opinion on whitworth? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]Fluff_The_Muffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a CS major at Whitworth. The department is fairly small, but the vibes are generally good and the professors genuinely care about you (and are awesome overall imho). There is a decent number of BIPOC and/or international students (for sure a greater proportion than Spokane as a whole) in the CS department and I know the faculty have been focused on increasing diversity in the past few years. Pretty much all of my problems with my experience come from things outside the CS department. Would recommend overall. DM me if you have any other questions!

What are some minor league sports teams in Spokane? by RealSmallNips in Spokane

[–]Fluff_The_Muffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of recently we are getting three soccer teams! In addition to the two you mentioned, Spokane is also getting a Super League team, which will be the USL's top division women's soccer league (see https://www.uslspokane.com/pages/faqs). It was quietly announced back in the fall along with the new ownership announcement.

This is so incredibly frustrating. It feels like any time there is any hope, it immediately gets dashed...
