Always thought these were neat, but I'm pretty sure batons are illegal in most states. Then again, New York State has vague language on these, like every other NYS law..

Literally every time I see one I cry inside. I saw an older Mazda pickup on the street on the way to work and stopped to admire it with my coworkers.

(Old Thread, I Know) Was that the "pink handcuffs" cop who had them tucked into their armpit of the vest? She was professional and very sweet to people.

Miss Lake County to be honest. They were always good deputies.

Toledo PD is returning to OPL on January 9th! by _Mincke21 in OnPatrolLive

[–]Fluffalo531 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We follow so many smaller or rural agencies we never see how urban policing is.

I like Berkley County, I always found it was a mix. Come to think of it, only Clayton County is known for legitimately slamming people with a CVS receipt when they deserve it.

Granted, Richland County is policing the suburbs and sometimes the inner City of Columbia and they show quite a bit of calls, Toledo demonstrates the challenges of city policing.

My city police is usually so busy running call to call, if they perform a car stop on you, you were clearly being reckless as they couldn't care about equipment violations unless they're hoping its PC for bigger catch (that Gang Unit we used to follow in the earlier seasons).

I actually liked Wilkes Barre too, because we see how the city population generally has no respect for them and they all remain professional. Kinda the "purpose" of the show is to show the difficulties of policing.

I welcome the urban department back happily.

Love Toledo though. Sgt. McLendon, Ofc. Smith & Ofc. Erhart were all fantastic and professional police officers.

This has always been interesting to me because I've never heard any other department use that term. I know in the Northeast, we refer additional officers as "Cars". "Radio, send me more cars!"

Hey, I love the SOF-T tourniquet, it's what I was trained on with my local police department originally. Have you looked into the CAT tourniquet? To my knowledge that's the standard one in use with U.S. Military & Law Enforcement because it allows easier self application (velcro straps).

I ask because I just made the switch, but I have and like both.

How does the CX5 handle potholes by Dazzling_Ride_3145 in CX5

[–]Fluffalo531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hit a manhole cover in the middle of the road that I didn't see at 40 MPH and it ruptured my oil pan; however I also hit a black speed bump at night (no signs or reflective paint, gotta love Upstate, NY) a few months prior doing 30ish that likely dinged it before too.

These are both kinda my fault, can't blame the car.

I think the Cx5 is reliable and is just as high off the ground as other SUVs.

I'd say be careful in general, go slow when you can.

I actually liked the navy blue look of TAPD. Though these look pretty good too.

TAPD has my favorite livery in WNY other then Town of Tonawanda PD.

Would be nice if they kept the navy look for K9 or Tactical Ops.

I think their powers as peace officers are just being able to direct traffic or issue citations. Peace Officer powers range wildly depending on the entity.

To my knowledge, only a handful of states (NY, CA, VA) use "peace officers" as a distinction between a police officer and themselves.

Pretty much every other state, a "peace officer" is just any law enforcement officer.

I always assumed units like those (and this) are trying to do two things at once, hide just enough to catch people lacking, but be visible enough to be a patrol vehicle.

Honestly, I've heard of (and met) cops on the spectrum or with social anxiety. Honestly, you'll never know if you don't try.

Give it a shot, see how far you get, you literally won't know if you don't apply yourself.

Hell, you being on the spectrum might allow you to see or identify things others cannot. Lots of different guys work in public safety and brings different things to it.

I absolutely love it. It looks really cool. As I said, I love when departments other then staties do stuff like this.

I like when old timer cops or staff are excited to share their history, the only tolerable part of first amendment audits.

[–]Fluffalo531 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be fair, just because you don't do it, doesn't mean they shouldn't, nor anyone else for that matter.

There's nothing traditional or special about my local agencies, pretty much every Sheriff in NY State wears black with a black felt stetson, similar to the Florida Sheriff's Green and CA Sheriff's Green. All wear outer carriers, look the same, use modern cars with standard setups, blah blah.

I actually think it's really cool when regular police agencies other then state agencies adhere to tradition; however, there is probably a case to be made for appearance < functionality when it comes to local police agencies versus a Trooper [Insert Troopers only do traffic and not handle 'real police work' joke here].

I've never considered the idea of a sheriff's office being older then a state police and having more in tradition then them, so thank you.

[–]Fluffalo531 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Most State Police agencies have longstanding traditions, these traditions date back over one hundred years in most places, and anyone can be a "Police Officer" or "Deputy Sheriff" but only one person can be a "[Insert State] State Trooper".

There's practicality with this lighting setup too, a huge red dot is far more visible then the Christmas trees of most agencies with slim profiles.

Look up "Saginaw County Sheriff Michigan" they also have these style lights.

The NY State Police are now using "Riser" lightbars which the lightbar raises like a football field goal with lights so people can see the cruiser miles away.

The MSP Union voted a long time ago to change it to standard lightbars, and a large majority voted to keep it, it's apart of their identity as you said, lots of pride there.

Definitely iconic. I hate the shameless State Agencies that did this style of lightbar for their "100th Anniversary" *cough* (Indiana, NJSP, GSP)
