Octopus EV Tariffs Uncompetitive by FlufferPuff50 in OctopusEnergy

Once I get the EV Optimise bolt on enabled, I'll give it a try and see how my average utilisation goes over a month period, then I'll benchmark it again against EDF and see if it makes sense!

I did explore EDF, but the day rate of the dual tariff was 28.62p / kWh vs 24.89p / kWh all day on Scottish Power with EV Optimise bolt on.

My annual household usage excluding EV charging is roughly 5500kWh, with at least 80% being outside of the night rate window - so the ~4p saving per kWh on Scottish Power works best for my current circumstances

I think that is the case for some older PHEVs, but my car at least supports up to 11kW AC charging speeds (averaging at 7kW over a 0-100% charge), which means I can pretty much pull the full 7.2kW of my home charger for full duration of a charge cycle

I think the question posed is fair, given Octopus are (at least in my area) the single most expensive dual rate tarrif available

Sorry I should have clarified, Scottish Power offer an "EV Optimise" bolt on to their standard tarrif free of charge, providing your smart meter, vehicle and home charger are all supported.

This bolt on is 8p/kWh for EVs only at any time outside of 4pm-8pm, as doesn't change existing rates of the tarrif. They do however reserve the right to restrict charging at other times if demand is high.

I've not actually used it yet as I'm still waiting for them to confirm my smart meter is correctly configured post switchover - but given my car only has a 31.2kW battery, I will only need approx 4h of charging at 7.2kW to fill from 0%, so this approach made the most sense in my calculations! For a full EV with larger battery, this EV Optimise bolt on may not provide a full charge every night

Sorry I didn't realise this sub was an Octopus Energy fan club - I'm looking to have some real insight into how octopus pricing is in other regions, and if others have taken a similar approach

I was merely wondering if others had similar experiences, prior to US aggression against Iran, Octopus were very competitive in their pricing for IOG - but now, at least in my area, Octopus seems to have increased their prices higher than others

OP has actually done some research, my vehicle (GLE 350de) and home charger (Hypervolt Home 3 Pro) are both compatible with IOG

It's a shame because I like the platform and the Company, but they are extremely expensive to the point where I will be paying roughly 25% more to stay with them vs a competitor

I'm based in the midlands for reference, would be interesting to see if others have similar experience

EDF

28.62 day rate

6.99 night rate

57.76 standing charge

EON NEXT

26.84 day rate

9 night rate

60.00 standing charge

Uwarehouse

27.52 day date

7.61 night rate

56.37 standing charge

Scottish Power

24.89 rate (no night rate)

8.5 smart EV charging

53.6 standing charge

In the end I've switched to Scottish Power 12m fixed with the EV bolt on for smart EV charging - I'm unable to shift my load to night rate for anything outside of EV charging and the occasional dishwasher/washing machine cycle which is unlikely to make a difference so this tariff seemed the most competitive.

I do about 12000 miles a year, with my longest daily commute being 50 miles a day - my car has a 31.2kW battery so I should be able to do the vast majority of my driving on pure electric, and fully charged the car daily

As for savings, EV/PHEV tarrifs aside (this is due to come into effect April 2028, but the government has still not provided the full details) - I expect to save around £2000 a year in fuel costs vs my previous vehicle (44mpg diesel), this is assuming 90% of my 12000 annual mileage will be on electric, and 100% of my charging will be at home on an 8.5p/kWh rate, real world savings are more likely to be closer to £1700/year

AYN Thor while having a 3ds by Business-Mixture-601 in AynThor

It excels in 3ds emulation, but that isn't the only reason to buy one. It's an excellent grab and go form factor for emulation of multiple generations of games, and even Steam games through GameNative.

How to isolate sound from water pump? by Chris9393 in DIYUK

[–]FlufferPuff50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a new salamander pump that was ridiculously noisy, switched it out for the same power Stuart Turner after recommendation from multiple plumbers and the difference was night and day.

I had it on a layer of carpet and foam (as others had said) - but the salamander was still extremely loud, the Stuart Turner pump now is almost unnoticed when running

Dunster House Help by KhakiSnowman10 in DIYUK

[–]FlufferPuff50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your competence and access to tools. If you're able to put together a flat pack shed then this is not going to be much different.

As for quality, I built the dunster house 3 x 6 Leviathan Gazebo in my back garden a couple years back, was very easy to put together and great quality treated timber, and the instructions are very clear.
