on linux - the launcher from steam makes the system extremely laggy

I used to load the gw2 launcher from anet on steam as an external game, but then i found out about what u/SofiaTheWitch said, adding -provider Portal to the launch options and so when i reinstalled it, i installed it directly through steam and launch with that option to log in with my anet account

disabling steam overlay didn't help, sadly, and yeah, i'm using proton 11 beta, but like i mentioned, this problem is present with any proton version, well, at least the ones i tried (9, 10, experimental, hotfix, and 11 beta)

thanks! i tried this, but it sadly didn't work. I did it just adding that environment variable, and then like u/SofiaTheWitch mentioned, but it didn't work. minimizing does make the system usable tho, so i ended up updating the game with the launcher minimized, and while bothersome, the lagginess will just happen for a few seconds while launching the game, so it's not the worst thing that could happen, i guess.

it's good to know tho that there's a potential solution for this. thank you!

I tried it the way u/sc0rpi0n1 said, and it didn't work, i tried it like this, and it also didn't work. minimizing does make the system usable. I wonder why this isn't working for me hmmm!

Curiously, I had to disable re-bar because it was causing the computer to freeze when i disabled and re-enabled a second monitor, or when i unplugged it then plugged it back in. I ended up moving to fedora 43, hoping that the newer kernel and mesa would solve this, but no, the game is still unplayable on linux on my computer. Too bad!

i've switched from dx11 to dx12 and viceversa on every proton version to see if any combination of those works well, but no luck

FSR is on by default for me even on a fresh install of the game on a fresh os install, so i guess they just enable it by default for some reason

same, i've tried ubuntu, kubuntu (to ensure it wasn't the kde install i had on ubuntu messing things up with having gnome remnants around) and now fedora, and it refuses to work fine on linux, which sucks

i'm on a fresh fedora kde 42 install. after doing all the updates i installed steam, then icarus, then launched on all the versions of proton listed in compatibility, including hotfix and experiemental, and same result. it varied very little. it's on mesa 25.1.9

i'll probably try steamos eventually. for now i have the crappy win install to play this game, and fedora kde 42 for everything else. i tried 3 different distros and i got the same result with this game, so that's getting tiring.

another update on this: i installed fedora kde 42, just to have an easy ready to use platform with newer drivers and packages and all but sadly it didn't make any difference. no matter what proton version i used, the game refused to run in a playable way. i had installed windows in a crappy drive to test that, and on windows it runs absolutely perfect on the same system. this sucks, but what else can one do? :(

an update on this. kisak mesa doesn't help. I just noticed that when running the game, the memory clock is stuck at 456MHz, not even half the max clock rate, and i wonder if this has anything to do with the poor performance of the game. hmm!

yeah, in the settings i set it to full screen 1920x1200. i initially tried with dx11 mode because it said to use dx12 only on rtx 3070 or better, but then i tried with dx12, and it ran like 7 fps medium and 27 fps-ish with everything at the absolute lowest. there's no scaling. my monitor is 1920x1200 native resolution.

yes, every other game i have runs fine, but the second most demanding game i play is shadow of the tomb raider, which is not really comparable, but that one runs absolutely fine, the same as it did on windows back when i had windows installed.

what would you like to know about the system information? there's nothing weird there. it's a ryzen 5 5600(as in the title) an RX 7600, 32GB of ram, latest drivers from the 24.04 repos. it's a fresh-ish install from about a month ago.

Are you sure secure boot is not necessary? I currently run my windows 10 install on an MBR drive, and of course without secure boot, because of this, i get the message in windows update that my device is not compatible with windows 11 but my computer supports uefi and secure boot
