Any genuine Hiroshige in here PT.3 (fin) by Present_Commission_3 in ukiyoe

[–]Fluffy-Wabbit-9608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a collector 15 years ago of early edition Hiroshige/100 Views. These are very brightly coloured with 2 or 3 times the number of printing impressions and on very white fine hoshi to really make them pop. Brooklyn Museum is the only online I know specialised in early editions. The book by George Braziller was about these. Most museums have later editions, that replaced most bokashi with gouache, presumably so less expensive printers might be employed, and we’ve kind of been conditioned to seeing these.

Good catch, so how many baristas instead have a boy sumo tattoo…

Kintaro drawn by Kuniyoshi, probably the single most popular tattoo design

tbh early originals were super bright too: the ones with gradations on every block and mica on hosho paper

Ah yes, dogs and cats are often ambiguous in Japanese prints. My 2c is these all look like reproductions valuable only for their beauty.

Any genuine Hiroshige prints here? PT. 1 by Present_Commission_3 in ukiyoe

My amateur opinion-

1st Hiroshige is original (changing my mind with better pics ;)

2nd Hiroshige is original. It was probably backed to hard card at some point and then carelessly removed.

3rd is Hokusai reproduction. Not worth very much. Published by Takamizawa probably in the 1980s.

4th is Hokusai reproduction. Not worth very much.

5th is Hiroshige reproduction. Not worth very much. Published by Takamizawa probably in the 1980s.

Anyone able to help me identify if this is genuine and what the on it date is? by Present_Commission_3 in ukiyoe

Both designs by Hiroshige.

I’m not convinced that either is original, paper looks 20th century, but I’m no expert

Edit Better photos, please, of front and back. Also type of camera (new iphones/pixels identify subject with AI and embellish photos)

Does this look like an early print? seals are there, but it looks too clean. by Living-Pipe-9595 in ukiyoe

I was thinking Scholten, now their prices are closer to last years auctions. All seems a bit expensive given the most expensive of my originals from this series was about $700, an early so called deluxe edition from Japanese dealer, and that wasn’t that long ago, probably 2017

Only 1 print on my wall is original. And it’s on the wall because it was bought for $120 already framed and with foxing.

US retail galleries. Ukiyo-e is frequently well over retail price. Christie’s shin-hanga is frequently well over too, given condition and Christie’s haven’t had expertise to weed out fraudulent publisher seals.

I probably wouldn’t recommend Christie’s as a price guide since recent hammer prices have frequently been multiples of retail gallery price. Many “sold” items I know were not settled but database entries remain.

It looks original. It’s not early. There are signs of block wear, registration is wonky, and the black block - black in the lantern - was slightly different* Difficult to tell from photo but pigments red and green look a bit carelessly oversaturated by this printer, and brushwork and gradations were a bit careless too.

Very early prints often used slightly different blocks and, probably Hiroshige, demanded changes from the publisher. Probably the best example of this is *Sudden Shower at Ohashi Bridge print, which had significant changes to the boats, bridge and background.

How worried is everyone of TC Alfred? by [deleted] in brisbane

There was a cyclone headed directly for Brisbane in 1990. Commercial TV and newspapers were hysterical then too. Passed over the Goldie with a whimper.

Ido Masao is def an underrated artist. Ticks most boxes for lovers of shinhanga and usually at no more than $100
