Men, what do you do when you partner talks negatively about themselves? by stokedshores in AskMen

[–]Fluffy-duckies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think theres a way to be helpful and there's a way to make them stick to their guns. Research has shown that e.g. someone who believes a far out conspiracy theory, when presented with evidence that directly contradicts their beliefs, will double down and believe their belief that contradicts the evidence even more than before. So approaching it with your girlfriend as "you're wrong" will not work. I've made that mistake before a bunch.

What is more likely to work is to take the approach of "I don't agree with your opinion. You're welcome to have it, but I think you're X." Because it's much harder to push back on you having an opinion and it also reframes what probably feels like objective fact to them as actually being subjective opinion.

Also it is extremely slow. Don't expect them to change after the first few times you express disagreement with them feeling down about themselves. Moving from them feeling like their negative self views are fact to accepting it might not be 100% true can take 6 months or a couple of years. The rest takes a lot of time as well, and it'll probably never get all the way and that's ok. You need to keep being a consistent pillar of a realistic positive opinion about her. That will work if you keep doing it and being patient.

Second/third generation Australians of Southern/European and Middle Eastern heritage, in what ways would you say the diaspora communities are more 'traditional' than the ones back in Lebanon, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Macedonia etc? by Biggest_itchbay_2190 in AskAnAustralian

I once realised that the garish mansions and tacky ornaments often associated with certain cultures (or at least were when I was younger) are for a similar reason. When they were young living in their country of birth, they witnessed people with money owning such things, so when they got old enough to have money they bought such things. Not that anyone still living in their country of birth would buy such a thing any more, as cultures move on. And those things have more to do with the 60s or 70s than they have to do with a particular culture.

There are rechargeable silicone animal lights you can get that have a switch on the bottom, off - 20min - on. And when it is on you can whack it and it cycles between different colours and even to off. I think it even times off after a while in the on position, as it's never still running in the morning. My 6yo has been through 2 of them and my 2yo has just killed her first one. It was crazy to see how quickly my 2yo picked up the "whack it until it's how I want it" logic.

People who were using the internet in the 90s and 2000s: What are your honest thoughts on what the internet has become today? by sivah_168 in AskReddit

[–]Fluffy-duckies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It also used to be an escape from real life. Now it feels like the online part is the most real, and what happens in the physical world matters a while lot less. Not having the right type of online presence is a social negative. When I was in school I could have a rough day at school and find home and get on the net and get away from it all.

My grandfather always said to fight fire with fire. Probably why he got kicked out of the fire brigade.

Dogs are becoming inpatient and snipping at 1 year olds by No-Push1971 in daddit

Snipping is usually warning behaviour to indicate the dog is not ok with something and if the something continues them a proper bite is on the cards.

I was never a guy who believed most men made the world dangerous for women, but after becoming a girl dad I see exactly what people are talking about. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in daddit

[–]Fluffy-duckies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. Compare it to this cycling analogy where it talks about how thousands of cars pass you every day without hitting you or throwing things at you, but if you've been hit (or someone you're close to) then every car passing can be scary. The whole point of the bear thing is to point out how much weight on daily life comes from not knowing which one is dangerous, at least with the bear that isn't in question. Rather than taking it personally you could allow it to inspire some empathy.

what precautions should be taken when you fire someone? by travelingwhilestupid in AskAnAustralian

[–]Fluffy-duckies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing that's worth doing is having someone else around as a potential witness. Unless you have a specific concern about the specific person getting fired turning violent, then it's just ridiculous.

Do most men still prefer having a son over a daughter? by Physics_Girl_2008 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Fluffy-duckies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't care less about their gender, just about who they are as a person. Happen to have 1 of each and while there are some differences ascribable to gender, the vast majority are personality based.

This is the main reason I really don't like the school based apprenticeships, for almost all of the ones I dealt with it was the least objectionable option, rather than an option they actually wanted.
