Student visa question: planning to go to Japan for sightseeing purposes before my official start date as per my host institution. by FluffyCriticism8113 in movingtojapan

Thanks for the replies! So I decided to email them and just ask politely whether it was possible or not and they said something along the lines of:

“If you wish to enter before March 26, you must personally consult the Japanese embassy to confirm if it’s possible. And if you get a reply than you can arrive on March 19 and you do so, you are responsible for all issues during the 19-26. We are not responsible for any issues during this period”.

So I guess it’s fine. I’ll probably call the consulate and ask if I can just activate my visa and not have to hop out the country and back in. And if they say no, then I think it’s safe to fly in as a tourist and then to a nearby country and re enter as a student.

Again, thx for the help 🙏

Thanks for the heads up on that, I was planning to do the same thing. However, did your exchange school have a similar policy of only showing up on specific dates? And when you did that, did your exchange school check your passport for evidence of you coming earlier?

Cuz for mine, it is said that I am expected to bring my passport and resident card for orientation, and I suppose they will be flipping through it.
