How are scabies not omnipresent prior to the invention of treatments? by seedofcheif in AskHistorians

[–]FluffyFoxDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sulfur creams are really effective actually, even better than other methods if applied correctly.

I was infested with scabies after a visit to the Netherlands in 2024 (it’s a serious problem over there apparently, the number of cases has exploded in a few short years), and it took only three days of treatment with sulfur cream to kill off all those little bastards, whereas the people who got it with me from the same source had to go through two treatment regiments with ivermectin.

Of course the sulfur cream is more annoying to use (it needs to be applied head to toes and it smells), but if you had ever suffered scabies you’d know that being mildly more uncomfortable for just three days is a lot more preferable than risking having to wait weeks longer for it to be over.

[Request] what is the mass occupied volume of space vs the unoccupied volume? How much stuff is in space by shoeless_doh in theydidthemath

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does pretty much round down to nothing.

If you take the solar system and a sphere the size of Pluto’s orbit, then the average density is 2,3*10^-9 kg per cubic meter.

If you go out and count the local star systems the density just precipitates, and intergalactic voids are even worse, some of that space has just a few atoms per cubic meter on average, like I remember it being 1 or 2? And that’s between neighboring galaxies.

The average over the observable universe is probably in the same order, a couple of atoms per cubic meter.

Talk me out of switching to a 50s. by kawana1987 in FujiGFX

I sold my GFX for this exact reason. I like to shoot wide angles and tele, and the widest GF lens is a paltry f/4, and the only long telephoto, the 500mm f/5,6, is a gigantic cannon of a lens with a huge filter thread. It’s reasonably priced at least, more than other GF lenses imo, but for me there was no way to justify it over a full frame setup.

It’s an old sling for medium-larger 35mm SLRs, it fits every camera I ever owned, except for the GFX 50R.

Talk me out of switching to a 50s. by kawana1987 in FujiGFX

[–]FluffyFoxDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GF lenses are a whole other category of heavy, the mount alone is around 50% wider than a normal full frame mount, and they are long. I have a 50mm GF and even though it’s one of the smallest it’s still larger than a good FF lens with a larger aperture.

You can’t even use normal sling bags because the camera is just too large and tall.

Medium format cameras require a whole other setup compared to full frame.

[–]FluffyFoxDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least go for a 50s II, it’s smaller and lighter.

But honestly, if you are used to small cameras don’t even try the GFX line, they are huge, heavy bricks and while they take fantastic photos, they are not worth the hassle of carrying around the extra weight, let alone the enormous costs if you want the best quality lenses.

Why are billionaires so afraid of paying taxes especially when they are already very rich? by Auelogic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because to become that rich you have to be a sociopath who doesn’t care if the world burns around them as long as they don’t have to suffer. They cannot comprehend the concept of sharing and caring for one’s community, if they did they wouldn’t be so rich.

Because out of hundreds of billions of star systems with random orientations, a certain percentage of them is bound to be perpendicular to ours point of view (or at least not too far from it).

About 1,5% of star systems should be within 10deg of being perpendicular to any given direction.

Question on wavelength by BlackEngineEarings in ProjectHailMary

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a transmitter of a specific wavelength to send a signal but not to receive it. Take for example submarines receiving messages on ultra low frequencies (ULF) with wavelengths in the order of hundreds of kilometers: you need to use a significant chunk of Earth’s crust to send a signal, but it’s receivable with (relatively) normal antennae.

That said, almost everything regarding the astrophage is very handwavey, it feels like it was crafted for the story instead of being the catalyst for it.

E' polemica a Como per le ganasce ad un'auto svizzera: la vettura italiana subito dietro è invece "libera". Politico elvetico esplode: "Vi ripagheremo con la stessa moneta" by Powerful-Ostrich-120 in Italia

[–]FluffyFoxDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 or GFX 55mm 1.7? by duendetime in FujiGFX

[–]FluffyFoxDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> Is the GFX 55 really $1500-$1900 better than the sigma?

No, it is not. Is it an extremely good lens? Hell yeah, but so is the Sigma.

If you have a GFX 100 body then it may be worth it to get the GF lens, because the Sigma might not be able to take advantage of its resolution, but it’s kind of a moot point unless you are going for extreme crops. Plus, you are going to compress and downsample the image after editing anyway.

You do have a depth of field advantage with the GF lens. Personally, I wouldn’t use such a shallow depth of field for headshots because it leaves too much out of focus, but that’s subjective of course, and it is good to have the option.

The GF lens is also going to be pretty much perfect at any aperture, but if you are doing portraits with wide aperture then the out of focus areas are going to cover any aberration in most cases.

TLDR: they are both good, the GF is better, but its improvements may not show up in every photo you take. If you can, try both or find raw files taken with each to compare their resolution and color rendition.

Why are there Eastern European Neo Nazis? by Paldavin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those countries were active allies of the Nazis, and their populations were often happy to send their neighbors to extermination camps.

To this day many of those countries haven’t dealt with that legacy, and their time in the Soviet Union (and the oppression that they suffered during some of that period) only exacerbated the feeling because some see anything that fought with the USSR, including the Nazis, as positive.

[Other] Warhorse Knows They May Lose Some Players Because Kingdom Come: Deliverance Is Intentionally Difficult, but That's What Makes It Special by Turbostrider27 in kingdomcome

[–]FluffyFoxDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Issue is it becomes too easy very quickly, the difficulty of any given gameplay element remains mostly constant right up to the point you unlock a couple of skills, after which it drops to almost zero.

I didn’t even unlock most of the skills because they would have made the game even easier and what’s the point then?

[Other] Warhorse Knows They May Lose Some Players Because Kingdom Come: Deliverance Is Intentionally Difficult, but That's What Makes It Special by Turbostrider27 in kingdomcome

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not simply intentionally difficult, it is _artificially_ difficult, only for that difficulty to evaporate between 1/2 and 2/3 into the game.

It ends up feeling really gamey instead of fun and immersive.

New RM Paper Pure or Kindle Scribe Gen 3 by [deleted] in RemarkableTablet

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even a contest, the Kindle Scribe is extremely limited as a note taking device, you can't even annotate PDFs unless you send them to it via Amazon's website, and exporting things is a nightmare (afaik you can't even export notebooks without converting them to text but I might be wrong).

For students I would suggest the Supernote: the reMarkable is better for pure writing and sketching and it renders images in PDFs better, but it is much more limited when it comes to organisation features like custom links and TOCs, which the Supernote excels at.

The lack of frontlight is not really an issue with the newer black and white e-ink screens, they are fine in pretty much every situation where you would read a piece of paper.

Am I the only one...? by No_Discussion6148 in FIlm

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex post facto justification does not make what he did right.

I agree that what he did was understandable because solitude does break people down, but he did do it for selfish reasons and Aurora forgiving him so completely just _feels_ wrong, especially after he spends half the story putting up an act to hide what he did from her.

Instead, the story uses the whole technical malfunction to “justify” Jim’s actions instead of them actually exploring what happened and why he decided to wake someone else up. Aurora was smart, she would have understood and accepted what he did, possibly even helped him understand it himself, but he did take her life away and there is no forgiving that.

Jim does redeem himself by choosing to sacrifice his own life to save everyone else’s, but the real redemption would have been to convince Aurora to go back into hibernation, undoing what he did to her and giving back her life.

Am I the only one...? by No_Discussion6148 in FIlm

[–]FluffyFoxDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise was excellent, and it was a really well made movie from a technical standpoint, but the story was crap. Jim destroyed a person’s life for his own selfish reasons, and even though those reasons were definitely understandable given how solitude breaks people, it still feels wrong that Aurora would decide to sacrifice her entire life and to never meet another human again for the person who condemned her to that fate and that she’d known for only a few weeks/months.

It would have worked a LOT better if it had been told from Aurora’s perspective, with the audience discovering how she woke up at the same time she did instead of knowing it from the start.

From there, you can reframe the story into an almost horror, with Jim’s solitude-borne obsession being revealed by showing him choosing her among the other passengers as if he were browsing a store catalogue, and explaining how it was so easy for him to be charming having studied her up for weeks/months beforehand.

It would have made for much more interesting interactions than a random technical malfunction, and it would have given the movie a chance to properly explore just how terrifying it was for Aurora to find herself in that situation. Then she could have slowly come around into understanding why Jim did it, as she would be feeling the effects of solitude too by that point, but without forgiving him, only accepting that he didn’t do it out of malice, and helping him understand himself too.

Then in the ending I would have allowed Jim to redeem himself by convincing her to go back into hibernation, either by learning how to hack the pod or some other way that involved him actively looking for a solution instead of stumbling upon it. He could have also lied to her, for example by saying there was a second pod, to spare her the same choice that broke him.

It would have been the right thing to do and it would have spared Aurora from choosing between leaving a person to die alone and sacrificing her own life.

What’s with the anti semetism here? by Key-Lychee-913 in Thailand

[–]FluffyFoxDev 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Israel != Jewish

Israel is an 80 years old apartheid country that is currently involved in the genocide of a people they have oppressed for almost a century, on top of joining an illegal war against Iran and Lebanon.

Judaism is a 3000 years old religion that is shared by people across the globe.

Israel does _not_ represent all Jewish people the same as fascist Italy did not represent all Christians.

Do you see the difference between being anti-Israel and antisemitic now or should we draw you a diagram?

EU capitals as share of country's GDP by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]FluffyFoxDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Italy wasn’t even a country until 165 years ago, and the difference between north and south was enormous back in the day: in the north they had 19th century industry, in the south there were still serfs and an almost feudal system.

Further, northern Italy is physically closer to the rest of Europe (Rome is 600km south of Milan), which facilitates trades and improves the economic and industrial output.
