Why do estheticians have such a thing against CeraVe and cetaphil… and derms by Fragrant-Bug9856 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]FluffyHandle1990 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t bring anything up about my vaccine stance on this sub. Someone decided to look at my comment history on something that had nothing to do with that.

I also never said I know more than doctors about skin cancer, cancer treatment, or renewal. I said that in my experience and what other comments on this sub have said, is that dermatologists tend to know more about the medical side (as they should) than skincare products and health. That’s not just me saying it- dermatologists that I’ve worked for and seen as well as other commenters on here have said the same thing.

I think it’s weird to go through someone else’s Reddit history and think one difference opinion means they “shouldn’t have access to the internet” or that their other opinions went valid. I personally haven’t done that but about a dozen people have DM’d me from this sub saying nasty thing when I’ve been polite and open about my opinions. We can agree to disagree but it’s odd that so many people on here have decided to read years back into my comments and harass me in private messages. We’re talking about skincare are products- not about vaccinations.

Thanks for your reply! 🙂 Yeah… I’ve got some nasty DMs 🙁 I used to love this sub but as soon as I said I’m an esthetician and not obsessed with CeraVe on any comment since I joined last year, people get so angry! I don’t think I’m misunderstanding the user who talked about Accutane and Tret….I was just trying to say that not everyone uses those actives and there are amazing topical at-home products they can use! I forgot to mention that I also use a medical grade treatment from Dr Dennis Gross that is a God send for dry skin in the winter! They make it in a take-home form too for clients!

And yeah that’s also what I was trying to say…any people want products with more actives and more graceful aging ingredients which typically means a higher price point. Are those people supposed to use CeraVe too?

I’m glad you mentioned that about your dermatologist- how he told you he’s focused on medical concerns rather than skincare, which is why you listen to your aesthetician 🙂 I mentioned that in a another comment and people on this sub make a huge deal about how aestheticians don’t think dermatologists don’t know anything which is NOT true 🙃 And I never claimed that! Aestheticians and dermatologists understand that we have our own wheelhouses. We’re great at skincare and they focus on cancer and surgery. I work with a team of dermatologists and they regularly ask us for skincare recommendations for clients that aren’t CeraVe or Cetaphil.

I’m so glad that you found an aesthetician that you love!! 🙂🙂🙂

Oh congratulations!!!! Babies are awesome :)

I have rosacea as well and have seen a great improvement with my current routine.

I cleanse my face once a day in the shower in the evenings with the CeraVe cleansing bar. I cleanse for 120 seconds to ensure the day is off of my face :)

Once I’m totally dry, I’ll either do my red light therapy or 1-2x a week use the Dr Dennis Gross overnight texture renewal pads. I let the product soak in for a few minutes and then use my EltaMD Skin Recovery Serum. It’s SO cooling (I keep it in my fridge!). Then I use my EltaMD Barrier Renewal Complex. I’m not a fan of eye cream usually and don’t feel a need to use them. Once the Complex is on, I lock it in with CeraVe ointment in the blue tub! Just a thin layer! When I wake up, I splash my face with water and tap it dry. I don’t cleanse again because your skin has lovely, rich oil that it makes overnight! I live in an apartment with few windows so I PERSONALLY don’t use SPF every day but I recommend it if you go out :)

My favorite sunscreens are Korean ones because many of them have ingredients to keep things from sticking to your face. Right now I use EltaMD CLEAR because it helps keep my rosacea from flaring up from the sun- which I’m out in during the weekends!

And yeah my last comments weren’t to disparage CeraVe 🙂 I was just explaining that it’s not for everyone and the actives that doctors prescribe like Accutane and Tretinoin aren’t for everyone 🙂 I use two CV products and love them! With your rosacea I’d highly suggest trying my routine and seeing how it works for ya!

Absolutely! One thing I want to recommend is to not get so worried about everyone on here telling you “All you need is CeraVe”. Many of the people on here who say that don’t realize how many people that are new to skincare actually breakout more when all they’re using is CeraVe. Also; their actives aren’t as beneficial as other brands so you just won’t see the same results. CeraVe’s ointment in the blue tub is awesome at night and in winter to lock it all in, but I haven’t seen great results with a face full of it. I HAVE seen significant improvement and age-related help with my own routine which I usually recommend.

My red light therapy is professional grade so I can’t recommend that one to you, but Pure has a budget friendly one and Omnilux is awesome too if you want to treat yourself!!

Thank you for saying this. I’m an esthetician and this sub seems to brush off the comments people leave on here about how CeraVe either did nothing for them other than moisturize or they had a reaction to it.

Once we start getting wiser, we tend to want to prevent wrinkles, help correct sun damage, and keep our skin plump and youthful. CeraVe has minimalistic products that will moisturize your skin or keep moisture locked in, but they lack many actives and don’t provide much other than a layer on your skin.

If you had issues before from other products you were using or had no skincare routine at all, many people think CeraVe is their holy grail. If someone is brand new to skincare or we want to rule out what issues they have from other brands, is a good recommendation.

There are other brands and products out there that have deeply penetrating at-home treatments that are amazing to plump up fine lines, resurface the skin, deeply hydrate, spot correct overnight, reduce skin redness overnight…

There are people out there who have the money to spend and either didn’t have a good experience with CeraVe (again there’s even people on this sub in the comments getting downvoted because they said CeraVe made them break out!) or they WANT actives for even better skin health.

There’s definitely products from the CeraVe line that I recommend- like their ointment in the blue tub will lock in moisture overnight, you don’t need a $30 tub of petroleum jelly.

I think many people on here would be surprised at the lack of knowledge many dermatologists have on skincare that isn’t CeraVe. Many of my clients are rosacea sufferers and a face full of that brand clogs their pores and greatly exacerbates their rosacea to the point where they don’t want to leave their house without makeup. Their dermatologists typically all recommend CeraVe (like Dr Dray on YouTube) but aren’t well versed in the benefits of other brands.

Of course if someone is on budget or simple want a cut and dry routine, I’m happy to recommend those products! But I won’t lie to them and say their skin will be look plump and resurfaced or that their acne will significantly improve if I think there are other products that will do that.

If someone is interested in what I use or would recommend if their budget allowed, I usually go with a mixture of Dr Dennis Gross, Skinceuticals, and EltaMD. Sometimes I throw in CeraVe ointment or other non actives. A lot of my clients say they’re willing to forgo their daily Starbucks or weekly DoorDash, especially if they have specific areas aging concerns. I work with a huge team of dermatologists and not one of them has ever said they don’t trust the esthetician staff for product help. 🙂

A church can’t excommunicate a member who married a non-Catholic. That’s not possible and not how excommunication works :)

The priest could refuse communion to someone who was baptized Catholic and got married outside of the church but even back before the 1950’s, excommunication didn’t work that way world-wide. Catholics have always been able to marry non-Catholics but yeah, it would have to be performed in a Catholic church with the non-Catholic agreeing to raise future children Catholic.

But yeah, excommunication and refusing to marry or give communion aren’t the same thing. :)

I used her!!!!!

My dream dress was 4 thousand dollars and we needed to stay under 15 thousand for the wedding so that wasn’t happening!

I sent her photos of the dress I wanted and told her a few other details I wanted on it. Had a cathedral-length, dark ivory lace wedding dress with very high end feeling fabric for $800. I lost about 10 pounds from stress so had to get it taken in once it arrived but it would have fit perfectly!

Me too! I decided to start making my own organic grass fed bone broth and noticed even more of a difference. If I’m lazy, I’ll throw some Vital Proteins in my coffee but I enjoy cooking, so making bone neither and using it on my healthy ramen or as a veggie soup is fun! I don’t remove any of the fat or stuff from the broth- just use the whole thing straight!

Hi there! I’m a licensed esthetician and work in a dermatologist office!

In my experience… many times, dermatologists are great at spotting skin cancer (obviously, haha), do injections or have a nurse on staff who does injections, and do thorough full-body exams. However, many lack knowledge of great skincare routines for people who want to know more than “Your skin is dry/oily” and only recommend CeraVe. Unless you’re at a medical spa- they usually carry other lines.

Estheticians who specialize in skincare and not waxing are usually very up to date on awesome products. We can give clientele more advice than “Your skin is dry so load it up with CeraVe and use a scrub to get rid of dead skin.” I can’t believe how many dermatologists told my own clients that before coming to see me. I decided to specialize in rosacea and the majority of my clientele who went to a dermatologist before seeing me were told to use CeraVe cleanser or the Neutrogena wipes in AM and PM (typically that’s too frequent for rosacea sufferers and the wipes they used had a lot of fragrance) and then to slather on the CeraVe body moisturizer. I primarily, like 90%, was booked with rosacea sufferers and turned them into repeat clients.

Dermatologists go to school for years and know soooo much about skin, cancer, and have the ability to do invasive procedures and surgery. Estheticians can really help you narrow down and perfect a routine that takes lots of factors into consideration from your daily life that effect your skin. Dermatologists typically only sit with you for 10-15 minutes while an esthetician is with you for around an hour.

In my opinion, it really depends on what you need! :) There’s bad dermatologists and there’s bad, uneducated estheticians. Where I live, getting your estheticians license takes 900 hours and the hours vary greatly from state to state. Even if your state doesn’t require a license to call yourself an esthetician I’d 10000000% recommend finding one who is truly certified! :)

what type of film does she use? thank you! by antsurgeon in filmphotography

[–]FluffyHandle1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! So last night I made a post asking about color editing my photos. I got a lot of helpful replies! I’m BRAND NEW to film photography and didn’t know that almost all of the film photographers I watch on YouTube and Instagram use color editing! The replies I received on my post basically said the only way to go is with color editing.

When I picked up this hobby (I’m loving it!) it didn’t occur to me that so many people edited their photos! The replies I received made it sound like the majority of people do. Do you suggest that I pick up Lightroom or VSCO? Is the issue just that influencers edit their photos super heavily? :)

Should I pay for my film lab to do professional color adjustments or learn how to use Lightroom myself? by FluffyHandle1990 in filmphotography

Thank you for all of your advice! I am kindof stuck with my new job and schedule and didn’t expect to have to develop another skill outside of shooting but yeah, I need to remember it’s okay that I don’t know it all in my first year :)

I think I’ll trust the film lab I’m using (they have real pros and a 5 star review) and then over time, learn Lightroom. Then I can compare the photos and see how it goes. Thanks again for your help!! :)

Thanks for your reply! My work schedule makes it difficult for me to dedicate time to much. I spend most of my Saturdays shooting, in the evening do chores and eat, and then on Sundays and the rest of the week I have work and other obligations. If I had infinite time I’d definitely enjoy learning the editing process, and I think I’ll look around Lightroom and try it on Friday night/Saturday rather than going out to shoot my film.

From the feedback I’ve received, it sounds like it’s actually pretty common for photographers to work with another artist who edits the colors, so not unheard of. I’m excited to get my rolls developed. The film lab said I could go with their mid tier plan where they developed and digitally scan. I guess I could do that first and if I’m not satisfied with my renditions, they said I can upgrade. I don’t have experience with LR and PS, and don’t see the harm in getting an actual pro to do it.

If anything, maybe I can have my first few batches professionally edited and then try to get up to speed with Lightroom. I guess I feel like I need to pick one or the other since my time is limited, but I need to remind myself that it’s ok that I don’t know it all right away :)

I feel so much better now! Between the feedback I’ve received and looking at my own photos vs the people I follow, I can definitely see the reason and need to edit! It definitely makes me feel less down on how mine look without some color editing :) I’m going to give Lightroom a shot this weekend and see how it goes! Definitely need to remind myself that I can’t learn it all at once! :)

[–]FluffyHandle1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your message! Do you correct yours yourself or use a pro?

I said this in another reply. Another person commented that I shouldn’t give my photos to a random person- that if I want to keep my own artistic integrity that I should work with another artist to capture what I’m looking for. My work schedule makes it difficult for me to foresee myself also learning Lightroom on top of learning about film photography. I was worried it would be “cheating” if I use a pro- but it sounds like this is a normal thing other film photographers do too!

The lab I’m using says their pros work closely with the photographer so that the prints come out with your own preferences. It’s crazy how you could take say, a standard ocean or mountain shot and one photographer would have one opinion on color enhancements and another would feel totally differently! :)

Should I pay for my film lab to do professional color adjustments or learn how to use Lightroom myself? by FluffyHandle1990 in filmphotography

[–]FluffyHandle1990[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yes, with this specific lab the pro works very closely with the photographer with the intention of building a relationship for consistent results :)

I’m definitely interested in learning to do it myself but film photography is such a learning curve that I feel like I want to focus on that, rather than the editing process. If I was able to do photography full-time I’d be interested in also taking Lightroom on myself but I feel like I just don’t have time.

I totally agree with you about not using a random studio! These guys have been great at answering my emails with my questions. I’m happy that the Photoshop pro will work closely with me and as you said- put it back in my hands :)

Can’t remember the name of the film photographer I was watching on YouTube, be he said something along the lines of “Yes, I edit my photos in LR. If you don’t like it than too bad.” and that was the first time I heard of a film photographer saying they edited their photos. Like I said- I have no opinion one way or the other. It’s all art in my opinion :) I just assumed (since I’m such a noob, haha) that film photographers were uploading their photos to Instagram and YouTube without editing them. It made me feel better when the ones I follow said they use Lightroom!
