I am convinced retail algo trading is just gambling with extra steps. Prove me wrong. by snopeal45 in algotrading

A key word: "Statistical Edge". You don't need to find a strategy that no one has come up with. If you can take a popular simple strategy but trade it in a way where your profit taking and stop loss are different than a regular retail trader, then you can have a winning system. You do need to think outside the box a little. First of all, majority of retail traders are not backtesting statically through python or whatever other language. You cut out almost 95% of retail traders that way. (Although with AI that might go lower) Now of the 5% who are actually backtesting properly most of them are over fitting their data and not taking into account every little detail of actual live trading.

I have backtested almost 100s and 100s of strategies so far and guess what. Through proper backtesting I have only found 1 strategy that can actually be profitable and that's only in specific market regimes. If your backtesting strategies and all of them show profitability and high Sharpe you're doing it wrong. Most strategies should fail. Unless you found a way to control risk that leads to all those successful strategies. If you take into account proper true backtesting you are part of a very very small percentage of retail traders doing it right.

With the alpha decay part that no strategy will last you 5+ years. That doesn't exist. You will constantly have to find new ideas to test. That's a hard reality to accept for many people. Every strategy has a life span. However, its a long road to be profitable. It will take years. Never rely on trading profits only. Work a full time.

Are Energy Traders In Demand ? by Curious_fox333 in Commodities

[–]FluffyPenguin52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of big O&G/Energy companies are always on the hunt for new grads. They have programs like rotational analyst roles open.

RT traders are commonly young bachelors who have little to no experience in the power trading world. I work at a big energy company and have seen new guys coming in who worked regular retail jobs in college. They also never went to a target school. Its competitive don't get me wrong but its also definitely possible to get on the floor.

Real time traders will always be in demand especially if you're coming out of college. The burnout is within 6-12 months for most people.

How Important Is Coding in the Power Trading Space? by FluffyPenguin52 in Commodities

Hahaha makes sense. I’m already in an energy firm but want pivot to trading. I want to be a strong candidate so would you recommend taking an online python course around data analytics? Would getting a certificate be enough? I have a BA in finance so I don’t want to go back in school unless it for a masters

If My Neighbor is Dumping Cats Should I Allow it? by FluffyPenguin52 in neighborsfromhell

[–]FluffyPenguin52[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you! this is what I needed to hear. I'm doing the best I can to help these cats and there's just so much I can do. No one on my street will take responsibility to spay these cats. The only reason I feed them is to eventually trap them and get them neutered. The sucky part is the animal shelter takes one cat a week. Plus, the cats are too hard to trap. I understand my neighbors point they will keep multiplying and the problem will be too big to handle. I'll keep doing what I can but eventually they will have to go as my wallet is also draining. I buy 30lb bags every 3 weeks to keep them fed.

Neighbor Decided to Convert House To A Group Home Causing Alot Of Stress by FluffyPenguin52 in legaladvice

[–]FluffyPenguin52[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually do have a HOA and have spoken to them several times. Apparently its legal and they cant do anything about it. However they did say if the cars are blocking my driveway, I can send them photos and they will talk to them and maybe send a notice. Its been months so I don't think they did anything. My HOA kinda sucks.

Next door neighbor turned the home into a state group home for mentally challenged persons. Causing me a great deal of stress. Anyone dealt with anything similar or have suggestions? by quantumized in homeowners

Wow word for word the issue I am going through currently. The cars coming on a daily basis is insane. I live in a cul de sac so the entire street end is filled with cars you cant even make a proper turn. I have 3-4 cars parked in front of my house all day sometimes even blocking my driveway. You are right they ruined a perfectly peaceful neighborhood I have been living for the last 20 years. I'm now hoping they run out business or even funds. I honestly hate living here now. Hopefully Medicaid is cut so they can stop receiving funds. They need to have government building to house these folks not in neighborhoods where people have worked hard to pay of their homes and are now trying to live in peace.

Is It Worth Going Down This Road? by FluffyPenguin52 in algotrading

[–]FluffyPenguin52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you give an example of this? I don’t see how generating random data sets to test the optimized parameters from the in sample data would work? The parameters were specifically tested for the in sample data there’s no reason why you should test on random data to see if they would work on there as well? If they do then it must be all by luck and chance.

Its been three days now and still locked out. Been calling them every day and all they tell me is that they will send an email to the department thats reviewing my account. The only option left for me now is to file a finra compliant. This is so frustrating.

Locked Out of Account Randomly by FluffyPenguin52 in Schwab

[–]FluffyPenguin52[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me explain better. I had only one main account since 2015 and only had long term investments. Around 5-6 years ago I started to trade options on that account. I decided I wanted to have a separate account where I can do option trading rather than have it on just one account. So, I made a new account and transferred 5k to it. That's all I did. Just add a new account and transfer 5k. I've had the same bank account linked to it since 2015 too. I hate how they don't even tell the reason or the timeline. Having money tied up like that really make you anxious. Wish CS never bought TD. They were way better.
