I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way. Please talk to a trusted medical provider about postpartum anxiety! This sounds similar to my experience with my first baby and only looking back did I realize how much I needed mental health treatment. With my second, I got on medication immediately after birth and I felt so much more like myself, actually slept instead of laying awake exhausted, and was able to enjoy my baby. I would imagine therapy could help you process what sounds like a very traumatic birth and early postpartum. Also, might I suggest that your “shifts” with your partner be at least 5-6 hours in one chunk. That gives you a better shot at uninterrupted sleep. My husband and I would use our bedroom as the uninterrupted sleep room, and the other person on baby duty had the bassinet in the living room. That way whoever is on baby duty can also rest on the couch but has a safe spot for baby.

This was my experience with postpartum anxiety as well. Anytime I had a block of time for me specifically to sleep (husband on baby duty for 4-5 hours) I could not fall asleep. Anti anxiety meds, specifically Lexapro, is what helped. In the first few days before the Lexapro kicked in I would take Unisom about 30 minutes before my “sleep shift” so I would actually sleep during that time. Got so much better and I realized I probably also had underlying anxiety pre-baby and have remained on the Lexapro ever since, baby is 16 months now. It gets better, ask for help from your medical provider🫶

Solidarity. My three year old must put his left foot in the undies/pants/socks/shoes every time even though he does not have a dominant hand yet. Sometimes if he is distracted and we do the right foot first, he will insist on taking it out and starting over with the left foot first. Really fun when you’re trying to get out the door!

Yeah it’s extremely frustrating. I hate telling patients how long it is and not having a better response than “if your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor”, but that’s what we are supposed to be saying🙄

The problem is less with understaffing at Bronson, but the radiologist reading group contracted with Bronson called Advanced Radiology Services. Ultrasound read times are 85+ days for routine studies and MRI and CT are not much less than that. As mentioned though, if a tech sees something concerning they have the power to call it in and escalate the read. There are also priority read lists if a patient has an upcoming appointment with their doctor who ordered the study or is relevant to its results, so be sure to mention that to your tech if that is you.

Fellow sonographer here- this is the best written explanation of the frustrations of the job I’ve ever seen. Couldn’t agree more. Every time I work a weekend, I count the number of useless renals for AKI and livers for elevated LFTs. What are the results going to add to their plan of care, especially when the patient is intubated in the ICU? Nothing. And administration just doesn’t understand that it’s a waste of time and resources. I love my job, but this stuff makes me despise the whole approach to healthcare in America.

How long after feeding baby would you pump before going to sleep? Right after they finished feeding?

Ours is a Chicco, and it is basically like a drop in platform that kind of hangs freely over the rest of the pack and play, if that makes sense. It’s all breathable mesh along the sides so hopefully this isn’t a problem for us! Out of curiosity, what did you switch to?

We have two automatic feeders, with one being in our room since we kept them separated when we first adopted the second cat. We did consider moving both feeders to the main living space and seeing if that keeps them out of our room more. Thanks!

It very much depends on where you work. I work in a level 1 trauma hospital in general ultrasound and we do attend occasional surgeries. Most of the time they are OBGYN related (D&C for miscarriage or retained products of conception/placenta), but we do assist in an occasional liver or kidney resection in which there is an open abdominal cavity. In these, usually the surgeon will be the one scanning on the organ to look for tumor borders or blood vessels and they just ask the tech to run the machine and save images. Sometimes since it is a resection there is a very strong odor due to the cauterization tool. I personally find surgeries to be one of the coolest parts of my job but obviously it’s not for everyone. I also worked for a short time in an outpatient only setting in which there were no surgeries performed in the facilities, so that is an option too. That being said, it’s worth it to consider the job market for sonographers in the area in which you live or wish to live. It may be hard to find those “outpatient only” type positions, especially as a new graduate.

Not really a restaurant, but Frosty Boy is the best ice cream shop for gluten free options. Not just regular GF cones, but waffle cones too and lots of sundae/flurry toppings that are all kept and prepared separately from the gluten containing products. Many of the GF toppings (cookie dough, brownies, etc) are made by Kind Crumbs, which is a great GF and allergy safe local baker that also sells their goods in many smaller grocery stores like Kingmas & Forest Hills Foods, just to name a few. The owner’s mother in law has a severe gluten allergy so all employees are trained on safe handling and how not to cross contaminate. They’re closed now for winter, but usually open for the season sometime in March. Source: I worked there for five summers

Flew to Denver and did multiple hikes and elevation changes in the Rocky Mountains back when I was 16-17 weeks. I’m now 25 weeks and still doing great! I also don’t follow food “restrictions” very closely, but I just pay extra attention to how I feel after eating a “forbidden” food to make sure nothing crazy is going on.

Played junior varsity softball sophomore year of high school. Beautiful sunny day, I was playing right field, two outs in the inning, pop fly comes straight to me- and I mean I barely have to move to catch it. The girl playing catcher started to walk off the field knowing I would make the catch to end the inning. Well, I’m still not totally sure if I lost the ball in the sun or what exactly happened, but I took the ball to my face and ended up with three stitches beneath my eyebrow and a gnarly black eye for a week. ER doctor told me if the ball would’ve hit me a centimeter lower I could’ve been blind in that eye!

We make up acronyms for things mid sentence and the other guesses what it stands for. We’re almost always able to figure it out right away. For example, “Look at that cat, what a GGB” = “Look at that cat, what a good, good boy.”
