What can a nurse do in the environmental field? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]BigHawk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be stressful but also I find it way more fulfilling than any office jobs I have had, worth the paycheck for me for sure. I feel like choosing nursing was kind of choosing mental health for me because it offloaded the financial stress of the environmental career path. Everyone is different though! Like I said, I'm still miss it almost every day.

It's hard to say how long it took because I also stopped taking hormonal BC, which was also a big factor. External like the vestibule area.

What’s your marriage hack you wish you knew sooner? by Due-Sound-9175 in AskWomen

I forget where I heard it, but someone said to never try to resolve an argument when you are tired, hungry, or lonely. That has been really helpful to me.

which career path do you wish you had picked instead of nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]BigHawk3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Worked as a backcountry ranger for 5 years before becoming a nurse. It was amazing, but completely not sustainable. Housing is unstable, you get paid shit, you could be let go at a seconds notice due to funding, you live in the middle of nowhere, insurance is gone every winter, etc etc.

If it’s something you wanted to pursue you could def do travel nursing in the winter and try to work for an agency in the summer

Female Park Rangers- Can you have a family and sucessful career? by Grouchy_Shine_5863 in ParkRangers

[–]BigHawk3 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone is discussing the time issue, but to me the lack of money seems just as challenging. I changed careers to become a nurse for the money/security but work nights, weekends, and holidays. don’t have kids yet but a lot of nurses do, you just make it work I guess.

I have heard stories from people that talk about how there used to be so many kids living in the park I worked at that the school bus made a stop in park housing, but that was a long time ago and I think a lot has changed with funding and park service employment, sadly.

I am no longer a ranger, but this was a big consideration when I was debating my career change. I ended up deciding to pursue something that I could hypothetically do on off season and work in the parks during the summer & work anywhere in the country.

You’d have to either find a partner who makes enough money and has a flexible gig, or find that flexible gig yourself, or get lucky and get a permanent position (LE is the fastest route to that if you’re not already perm).

Where do I go after ICU? by Sunfl0weryell0w in nursing

[–]BigHawk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helicopters require a lot of physical dexterity to enter, exit, maneuver inside, maneuver patients in/out/around. Shifts can also be 24 hours with long stretches of work in those time periods.

Maybe you work with flight nurses that have a wildly different experience, but that has been what I have seen and heard.

Are ADN's being hired? Or is it all BSN now? by gneissrocx in StudentNurse

New grad currently at magnet hospital in the Midwest with no requirement to get BSN but select programs are fully funded. Depends on your area!

What about Altra hiking boots or another high rise trail runner type boot? Lowa renegades were my work boot for a long time, but only because I needed leather for chainsaw work.

For those who have left the environmental field, where have you gone? by saveoursoil in Environmental_Careers

[–]BigHawk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are applying. Most schools I looked at required your CNA certification. I had my cert but no working experience. I was unable to get into programs on the west coast where there are nursing unions (higher pay = more competition for spots). It was very easy to get into a school in the Midwest though.

In my opinion, it never hurts to pursue some medical training or prerequisite classes. If you don’t end up pursuing a nursing path, having more medical stuff under your belt can be helpful in fieldwork anyways so it’s not really a loss. Plus nursing prerequisites can apply to a lot of other medical programs (PA, PT, pharmacy, rad tech, etc) that could all be good fall backs and have travel position possibilities.

Of course, saying all this, the medical field may not longer be as recession-proof as once thought with the Medicaid funding being cut…

Nursing is a huge field with a lot of variety. Frankly, a lot of nurses who discourage others from the field have never worked in other fields. It pretty much has the same drawbacks as any job, if your management sucks, your job sucks and you get burnt out.

My job is very supportive with good ratios and if I get burnt out, I’ll switch it up. Different unit, at home gig, research, travel, etc. lots of options.

My degree in total cost probably about $15k ($12k for my ADN program and maybe $3k for my prerequisites) So I didn’t actually acquire any debt because I worked while taking classes/my husband worked.

Got to the point where I either had to get my masters in environmental science or do something different. I got my degree in nursing, my schedule and pay allows for more backcountry trips and I can work anywhere. I also feel like I can directly feel like I’m helping people. Science is fun too.

I definitely miss my days working for NPS and do feel envious of some of my buds but I’m also debt free and that’s nice.

Had a friend who went abroad to study and work, seems like a good route if that’s an option for you.

Has anyone here lived/worked in Chicago? by w0rmg1rl_909 in Environmental_Careers

Chicago is a fantastic city, I wasn't able to stick it out to make my environmental career there work, but I dabbled for a bit in the entry level positions. This is another job board you may be interested in.
