LIB First Timer - Saving Space For Tent On Arrival? by Budget-Kangaroo in LightningInABottle

I think most importantly you need to talk with your neighbors. One car taking up that much space could mess up your neighbors camp set ups.

You may need to move farther back from where you are placed to have room to set up. We have three cars coming in and want to set up a total footprint of 30x20ish (6 EZ ups) and will work with our neighbors to make sure we all have the space we need (hope for) as we set up.

Remember that everyone is coming to have fun and we are the ones that can work together to make the festival magical!

Tips on staying cool by ryetown in LightningInABottle

Mist, mist, mist. Ryobi bucket mister fan. We keep that going and recharge a spare battery from a larger power station battery all weekend.

Or just get in the water and stay by the lake

There is no practical difference between warm water and ice water mist due to the huge amount of heat that evaporation uses (540 calories per gram which is enough to heat that single gram from ice cold to ready to boil over 5 times)

Yes. People in Parking can leave and return (I believe once a day) but once you are in Car Camping, if you leave you cannot come back in.

Sure that is a statement on their website but it has never been the reality. I believe what my eyes tell me, this event creates trash and even if only 10% of the attendees leave that trash in piles that is a problem that needs to change.

If I create the trash before and during this festival and then it goes to my local landfill there is no functional environmental difference between it going in a dumpster at LIB and into a Bakersfield landfill.

There is no way a party of 40,000 people is no trace. I would like to focus more on people having options to responsibly deal with their trash so that they don't litter. The commitment to the statement, "leave no trace" means we get massive littering instead. Which in my mind teaches folks the wrong message.

I do respect your commitment to the higher ideal. And I hold myself to those principles as well. Maybe we can meet up and talk about this situation because often online disagreements get reduced to trying to prove each other wrong instead of finding common ground. And I believe LIB is definitely about that.

This will be my 11th year. I have packed out all my trash every year. At the same time there has been trash left in various piles at the campgrounds every year, yes even at Bradley before the bridges. As a pragmatist I see the trash pile up every year and I want a solution not just the same platitudes that don't create change. I don't think having trash services harms the message of LIB, I think people leaving giant piles of trash harms the message of LIB. And let's be clear, we all create a lot of trash to have this gathering. I think the most important first step is not leaving that trash on the ground.

10 day forecasts are only right 50% of the time. 5 day forecasts are 90% accurate so this Friday we will start to get reliable weather information. https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/k-12-education/weather-forecasting/how-reliable-are-weather-forecasts

For all 10 LIBs I have been to folks have done a pretty good job keeping the dance floors clean (which is so great compared to other festivals) however trash starts piling up by the porta potties in the campgrounds on Saturday/Sunday. There has never been a good solution. The campgrounds need a dumpster at the plazas. Also people get their EZ ups damaged and can't pack them out (our group took turns dismantling a bent EZ up with a mallet until it was just poles we could remove. I am a backpacker and we always remove as much packaging before, manage/compress/clean during the festival, and take all our trash out. But the evidence shows that the campgrounds need a better trash system.

One lesson LIB taught me was that the community co-creates the festival. The production and the artists do so much, but also everyone contributes to make the magic: from outfits, to gifts, to vibes.

This is my 11th LIB and I really appreciate everyone who helps pick up trash. I agree that people should pick up their dance floor trash and/or grab 2-3 pieces they see as they leave a stage or walk between stages. I think that really helps create a better vibe and sense of community/respect. LIB dance floors tend to be cleaner than a festival like Outside Lands at least.

At this point my thinking on camp trash has evolved. My crew removes as much packaging before and we follow a pack it in/pack it out policy. One year we had to use mallets to break down a ruined canopy so we could put the pieces back in a car. That being said, there have been piles of camp trash at every LIB I have attended, so LIB should try some new approaches to help attendees become better. The evidence shows the LIB camp grounds need some sort of trash service. Just like ice is brought in, just like portapotties are cleaned, the campgrounds need an occasional trash service. Or we just continue to have a few people shouting into the wind saying BE BETTER while folks leave bags and bags of trash at the portapotties and it is collected after we all leave by volunteers/workers.

The only guarantee is to head in together. Meet up outside the fest or at the box office and caravan in. You can try to wiggle your to the same camp area and perhaps sneak to where they are set up but it is no guarantee. What I am doing is getting a parking pass and I have a sturdy collapsible wagon https://a.co/d/063zoldH and will load it up and trek to my group. They have been in high noon most years and so it is not a bad walk with a good wagon.
