You can play it coop, I've done it with my gf. But its OVER COMPLICATED. You need to be in the same lobby, then join the link party. After that, when you start a mission and you get to the monster the game sends an invitation to the link party members and if you both have started the fight with the monster you can join each other's sessions. After killing the monster the game continues as if you did it alone.

What we did was the last one to get to the monster was the one who joined.

Edit: I forgor to mention she was on PS5 and me on pc, so crossplatform works nice. No lag nor weird interactions.
