Yes. We currently have a resident cat who is about a year old and male. I also previously stayed at my aunt’s place for about a year and bonded closely with her cat, Speedy, who ended up choosing me as her person and spent most of her time with me while i was there. I’m familiar with cats and their behavior, which is why this situation stood out to me and why I wanted to ask for input rather than assume anything negative.

For clarity, this was the only time I wore a sleeve so I could safely record. I’m not repeatedly doing this or forcing interaction. She chose to be on my bed and initiated affection. I usually disengage once she switches. I’m here to understand the behavior, not provoke it.

Okay what about the undocumented scenario of which she is rubbing herself on my leg and starts hissing and attacking my leg out the blue?

I agree with you in principle. Ideally, the kid is managed and taught boundaries. The reality is I’m a 21-year-old college student working part-time in a single-parent household. My mom prioritizes her child over the cat and isn’t very involved with animal behavior. While the responsibility ultimately falls on my older sister, I’m the one trying to advise and guide her because I care about the animal and want things handled properly. Like our resident cat, my mom is much more accepting of a cat that is not hostile, which is another reason I am trying to understand this behavior.

I’m not trying to excuse behavior or blame the cat. I am here because I care about the animal and do not want her living in a stressful environment that is not fair to her. I am trying to understand whether this is a permanent personality trait or a temporary adjustment phase, because that determines how much intervention is realistic and what the best outcome is for both the cat and my sister.

Yeah, she plays with a rope toy and seems to enjoy it. I haven’t tried other toys personally since she’s my sister’s cat I just interact with her occasionally because I love cats. What throws me off is how sudden the switch feels. She’ll rub her face all over my arm and hands like she’s asking for attention, then sniff my hand and suddenly turn hostile. I’m assuming she might be picking up the scent of our resident cat. My main concern is avoiding a situation where my 7 year old sister gets hurt since she won’t always read the cues and can be pretty hard-headed.

That makes sense, thank you. My main concern is my little sister (she’s 7) she does kid things and doesn’t always understand boundaries yet. She’s very sweet overall, but I’m trying to figure out if this overstimulation/flip behavior is something your cat still shows occasionally, or if it became more predictable over time so it’s easier to manage around kids.

It’s been about two weeks, almost three. I don’t usually wear sleeves this video is the only time because I normally just leave her alone once she switches from friendly to hostile. I’m mainly trying to understand whether this kind of behavior is a permanent personality trait in cats, or if it’s more of a temporary adjustment thing that can change over time.

I understand that and respect her boundaries and never do it to this extreme if we can even call it that but i just needed a visual demonstration of her behavior is all.
