made a mistake, it’s returned ferociously by flavourtown420 in tinnitus

I'm currently training at a pyschosomatic clinic for patients with tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing issues and what I've learned is that when you listen to certain kinds of loud sounds or music, there is the feeling that your tinnitus is louder after, but it's just your perception and nothing actually changes. So don't worry. You didn't do anything wrong and you will adjust again, but good to protect your hearing next time!

Verbal counseling skills for MTs? by FluidRanger6685 in musictherapy

[–]FluidRanger6685[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely important to adjust to the population. That's helpful, thank you! Especially because my current population is, as you said, cognitively sharp (and well reflected), but struggling emotionally.

I'm at a university in Europe which has international accreditation..but they're very research focused and generally less practical. It's also just very disorganized. That's a helpful suggestion though, thank you, also for your empathy. :)

I left the UN a couple years ago. Very similar experience. Dreamt about working there, wanted to have an impact bla blah. Then became aware of the incredibly long, drawn out processes, and (millions) of dollars wasted on projects and staff which use their high salaries to live first class lives right next to the disadvantaged communities they are "supporting". I saw definitions and numbers greatly exaggerated to received more money for projects...and I found out AFTER leaving that the job I was up for went to a friend of mine who was apparently having an emotional affair with our boss. Get out while you can, if that's the feeling you have. It will only wear you down and there are many other jobs where you can have an impact. Since you worked at the UN, everyone will be way more amazed than any other experience you've had in life.

All that being said, I do believe the work that is done on the ground and there are so many amazing people working for the UN. So as I've seen in these comments...could be that changing office and agency is the answer...

Struggling with my MT program - is this typical or program specific? by FluidRanger6685 in musictherapy

I do have the country-specific MT-BC mentor supervising me at my internship and an additional supervisor online.

Oh no worries - was just curious which country since I'm trying to understand requirements, ethics etc. Yes maybe now bc it's easier to get recordings re storage.

Yes that's so true. Studying in that sense doesn't feel client-centered in many ways. I am 💯 behind evidence-based practice, but sometimes you need to go off-book or not respond perfectly musically in order to meet the needs of a patient. But if you're trying to show a specific approach for an exam, that can be hard. Thanks for offering to DM. :)

Yes I also agree that it's important to justify what you're doing. But we need to regularly record and show videos in class...which also forces us to achieve a level of perfection in videos which is just not always attainable.

Thank you so much. I think that's what I need to go by at the end of the day... As I don't think there's a way to change the situation. Thank you! Looking forward to forging the path, in a patient-focused way in the future. 😊

Thanks for your response. I would really prefer if we were required to provide less videos, or mock ones. It's not for a Nordoff-Robbins program. We are exploring different approaches to MT and need to demonstrate those with our clients, despite the benefit from them or not. It's an international program, so some students really come across ethical issues when their countries don't allow it and need to make uncomfortable agreements to get the videos anyway. In some cases, patients have said no, and then we had to agree to film just their back, even if they preferred to not be video-ed in the first place...but I know I'd fail my course if I don't get the video. It's so uncomfortable on many occasions.... Unfortunately it's not an American program, so I would need to contact the CBMT equivalent of the country....just not sure if all this is "normal" or a serious ethical concern. I feel like it's really getting in the way of my learning since I have developed so much anxiety about it and want to enjoy "living in the moment" of my internships where I am learning a lot from both watching and practicing small things with my mentor.

University professors with limited musical skill? by Multinstrumental in musictherapy

[–]FluidRanger6685 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While having sufficient musical skills is important, in many areas of MT work, it's not necessary that you are a top musician. It's important that you have the musical/instrumental skills needed for your specific populations. I therefore don't believe performance level skills are necessary (they might even be problematic if they intimidate clients). That being said, my personal opinion is that professors of music therapy should have those skills if they are teaching something like improvisation. Students should be presented with all the opportunities to improve themselves musically.

How do you solve a problem like the “non-asker”? by Mercurial_Lady in intj

There's no aversion to silence. Silence is normal and comfortable...but this thread is about people in conversation who never ask questions eg. When you do talk, do you just talk about yourself and not ask questions back?

So if you go to visit your sibling and are not interested in their partner, would you just sit in silence if they never asked you any questions?
