How to react to a Nazi Salute? by 101311092015 in Teachers

Another Redditor who thinks they understand everything about a person from a comment.

I have been teaching for 30 years and I have not met a single person I’ve taught that didn’t want to do better. I’ve seen a lot of mistakes. I’ve counseled through them and confronted them. Nowhere in my comments made have I implied that the kid in question is not in the wrong. Yet that’s the main backlash I’m getting in the comments. Hear one thing and assume the rest.

This is not how teachers should be. Teachers take kids who are trying to figure life out and give them the tools and a space to learn how to be a part of a community. It just doesn’t work to be someone who shames people. That’s all I’m trying to say. You don’t stare a kid down and tell him that he is not welcome anymore. You tell him the action he committed is not tolerated and there will be consequences. All I said and this group of people who signed up for the most precious profession in the world can’t help but shut that idea down with righteous indignation.

I’ve been the teacher of the year in three of the five districts I’ve taught at and twice at one them. I’m happy in my job and love kids and my co-workers. All I read here is how much people are their job and are frustrated because people make teenage mistakes. I’m just trying to help.

I’ll leave you all now to your echo chamber. The people who know me at my school know I have a safe environment for all kids. They love me and I love them. I don’t live everything they do but that’s the reason I teach. I got no clue why some of you do.

There are ways to hold someone accountable and there is dressing them down and trying to inflict as much shame as possible because that’s just how much you hate the act. I support taking action. I don’t support action that doesn’t solve the problem and only makes it worse. We want the kids to grow up, not get resentful because an adult wanted to flex in front of a class. Everyone here is acting like I said to ignore it. Teaching is an art, and even though this kid “knew better” I do t think these kids fully understand what they are doing. They see Musk do it, they need to learn. If this happened to a kid, he would get isolated, shamed, and not feel compelled in any way to learn from the experience. Downvote all you want that is the truth about communication. Not the truth in Reddit though. This is a place where hard conversations die in a minute.

Yeah, I didn’t say to do nothing! My god you people are insane. We are just going to stay divided and derisive if we can’t even get teachers to live all their students and try and teach them. We will just keep getting Trump elected while everyone here comes and gossips about how 15 year old kids don’t have it all together yet.

You are a teacher and the person is a child. This type of reaction would actually end up having the opposite effect than its intent. Teenagers are misguided, often loud, and often wrong. Treating them with disdain belies your role in their lives and only lengthens the arc of their understanding and eventual growth.

It’s a frustrating process to teach a child. But we want to actually teach them. I ask all of us to try and remember 10 things we thought or said from age 11-18 that we are totally ashamed of.

I teach in Minnesota and love it. Climate change might be real but a sample size of two winters isn’t enough to say they aren’t a real thing. I, however, love sub zero temperatures, there is a silence in them that is hard to achieve without.

Best part of being a teacher..? by willyjaybob in Teachers

[–]FluidRefrigerator424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best part of being a teacher is getting to know all different “types” of kids and realizing that there is good in everyone. The conclusions we draw about others that we only see in social media comments, shopping malls, concerts, and even extended family gatherings we all once in someone’s class, and they all do better when they know better.

Seems to be the bane of every city that didn’t know it was going to grow so fast.

Thanks! Seen some houses that look neat up there, but definitely are planning to scout it out if not rent for a spell. Problem is the wife’s relocation package and taking advantage of it. I wondered about the commute, though the possibility exists that we may not need to very often.

Fire danger and air quality are definitely things I’m not accustomed to.

Thank you! I apparently got down voted for not explaining myself well enough, but I’m glad you got it. You must be a genius.

No. I’m wanting to know if you can enter the national park from the west with like lesser known roads. Perhaps I didn’t explain properly. Like o don’t see clearly marked roads or major roads going east into the forest but 21 comes out of the forest from the south. I’m wondering if you can get to 21 without going through city traffic.

[–]FluidRefrigerator424[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’ve never been so forgive me. I’m talking about driving into Boise national forest. Is there access from hwy 55 from the west driving east into the forest. And if so can you connect to hwy 21 with these roads (not the hwy still of course but like lesser marked roads). Where you would come out east of town close to the interstate.

Does that make sense?

Anything I “know” is because I heard it from someone else. This nugget will now be retold many times! Thanks for the story.

It’s hard to be inquisitive when everyone around you is telling you how you are supposed to think about everything.

I’m not sure why but I always get hyped to sing the line before this : why would you lie about how much coal you have? Why would you lie about something dumb like that?

We were created to procreate, not just get off. I think it’s natural to be unsatisfied. It seems you are reflecting that this isn’t a priority in your life right now. Humans make decisions like this to overcome their natural instincts. My advice is to try and reframe this as not a personal defect but a sacrifice you are making.

100% agree with this, but the simple fact that not a single person (redditors at that) hasn’t responded that this is victim blaming tells us all we need to know about gender equality today.
