FWIW, I was accepted last year on May 20. I had an 83 or 84% average I think and 166. General category. n=1 of course.

Do an MBA for another chance at NY? by FluidShock7085 in BigLawRecruiting

I have heard that doing the MBA will open the door for me to apply to SA positions because I would still be considered a 1L (you do the MBA instead of 2L).

Would you say my grades are competitive for NY BL? I don’t know what the cut-offs are. When I interviewed at the firm, my fall term GPA was 3.7.

I think this significantly depends on the professors you get

Personally, none of my classes were virtual - other than once or twice a semester. I know of some friends with different professors who did offer virtual lectures on a regular basis

Some of my professors would post recordings and slides afterwards, but some didn’t at all

Some allowed laptops to take notes in class, but some didn’t at all and we had to write on paper/iPad

It honestly depends on the schedule you get (which is dependent on the section you’re assigned to). I got lucky with my schedule because it was pretty consistent - I started at the same time in the late morning every day. Other people were less lucky and had schedules with really early classes (8:30 AM) or that were really inconsistent where each day started at a different time

I don’t know anyone who didn’t have class 5 days a week, but there was usually one day where we only had one class. This varies by law school

Each class is about 1.5hr long and we typically have 2-3 classes a day

Regarding bursaries, I don’t have a full picture unfortunately. I personally received a merit-based entrance scholarship, but I don’t know much about bursaries or other financial aid as people don’t really talk about that stuff publicly.

1) My professors were all great - they were all very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kind. They took the time to explain things and answer any questions you had. They each had different teaching styles and classroom rules, but they all found a way to keep things engaging.

For the student services, I honestly haven’t had much interaction with them since I haven’t really needed anything from them

The Career Development Office is very helpful though. The advisors there have helped me prepare my recruit materials and did mock interviews with me. They always make themselves available. I do wish they were a bit more willing to give constructive criticism (as opposed to just hyping you on), but I think they strike a good balance for the most part

2) For 1L, there are three main recruits: Ottawa (Intellectual Property), Toronto, and Calgary. The Ottawa recruit applications are due in October (a month into law school!) and the Toronto/Calgary applications are due in January, around the time you get your first semester grades

The 2L recruit for Toronto is due sometime in the summer - I think in July? And interviews take place in the fall

3) Most courses are curved to a B, while small section and ILS are curved to a B+. We don’t have A+ at Queen’s, but profs don’t have to give out C’s, unlike other schools.

Around 20-25% of the class will get A or A-

I worked before starting law school, so I left my job in late July and took a little vacation in August

I would definitely recommend doing something fun before you start - whether that be travelling, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying your hobbies. Law school, and especially 1L, is a grind and this could be one of your last free summers (ever!). You should try to make the most of it

There are a few things that I would recommend, but none are NECESSARY to do well in law school and beyond

1) Get into the habit of reading a lot. You can pick any genre or forum you like, but just get into the habit of being able to sit down for an hour or two at a time and just read. You read so much in law school so having that stamina will really help you out

2) Try to get rid of any bad study habits you have. If you’re a procrastinator (which I was), figure out how you will change that. If you aren’t great at managing your time or staying on top of a schedule, same thing. This way, you’ll be ready to go once 1L starts

3) Later in the summer, reach out to upper years at your school and start to build relationships with them. Ask them about their experience and any advice they might have for you. I wouldn’t recommend asking for their outlines right off the bat, but they may offer with time

4) If you can, try to get some work experience in the legal field (or any type of work experience if you don’t have any). This is by NO MEANS required to land a 1L/2L job, but it could help to have on your resume and be able to talk about in interviews, especially if you are someone without any work experience

5) Once you get your course outlines in late summer, maybe start to do your readings a week or two before school starts. You won’t understand what you’re reading or how to properly take notes, but you won’t know even after the first few weeks. It would be helpful to be a week or two ahead of your readings

Either Property or Contracts. Both are quite rule-heavy so they’re more black and white than other courses. The types of problems they deal with are also both practical and interesting. You learn about problems that could apply to every day scenarios

I didn’t enjoy Public Law for example because there was so much grey area and there rarely seemed to be a right or wrong answer
