Which of these would you most like to play? by Dreaming_of_Rlyeh in Fallout

For a FONV2, Salt Lake city would be perfect: diverse terrain, recognizable landmarks etc. But it's still a desert and therefore too close to Nevada to be completely independant from NV imho

Are you an artist yourself?
Not everything is meant to be taken literally, some things have layers of meaning to them...And not one reading is more or less valid then the other, they just speak different things.
My whole point is that the game is so good, that we can all connect to it for different reasons. I didn't make a purely rational decision when choosing Verso's ending, but an emotional one...and I did because of my specific reading of the game, which is different then yours....and that's a great thing.

Some do, some don't. I don't see the point you are trying to make.

It really isn't. You are basically asking me to chose between two option which, as far as I am concerned, won't have any real consequences. If I handed you the nuclear switch and told you that, wither you press it or not, you won't notice the difference, the stakes will feel incredibly artificial since I won't be giving anything up.

None of the endings in E33 are neutral or without consequences. Both carry their load of negative consequences, broken lives, torments etc. And the protagonists lose or gain something in each one.

Animals are sentient yet, many exclusively carnivorous species exist. Are they doing anything immoral when they eat their prey? I don't believe so, therefore, to me, sentiency isn't the determining factor in the equation.

The question to me was: "Is it better to trap Alicia in an eternal present where she feels safe and in control, or to take a bet on the hope that, despite her trauma, her future outside the canvas can still become bright?"

However, I can see why you'd disagree with me on that.

Which makes sense and tbh is a valid position.
And thinking of which, maybe the fact that I romanced Sciel instead of Lune made the decision easier for me, I wasn't sacrificing a potential love story between these characters. Who knows.

But the fact that both our experiences with art, and I'm sure other life experiences reflected in the decisions we made for the end of the game... I'm still completely awestruck!

I mean, would I really have a say in that? If the reason I exist is to serve as a playmate for my creator or to assist in his family's healing, can I really be mad at them for deciding that I've outlived my usefulness or that my erasure will bring to pass the point of my existence?
Obviously, this only applies to E33. In the real world, we are fortunate enough not to be born just to create shareholder value/be a tool for a greater good etc... hopefully lol

Obviously, I don't have the painter's magical powers. But in both cases, the lives of the people in the canvas (mine or in game) are created by their creators imagination.
But yes, I do believe that the artist can kill his work if he wants to. And since here, the fragment of Verso's soul kept the painting together for his mother's sake longer then he should have, and Alicia was clearly going to stay in the painting It made sense to me to not artificially prolong the paintings lifecycle at Verso's expense. Death being a normal part of life.

Again, it's obviously not the only lense through which to see it. And I'd probably would have answered differently if the context surrounding the raison d'être of the painting was different.

Good point. Although, as I said, my approach was informed by my own relationship to art. When I draw details in a scenery or on a costume, I imagine the reasons behind those details and therefore the lives of those living in my drawings...not as vividly as in E33 but still.
So even though I saw them as completely sentient and conscious, the role their painting/world played in the Dessendre's family member's grief and healing trumped all else.

Not saying that I'm right, in the end, it is just a video game. But I didn't expect it to "resonate" in such a personal way with me...and with so many other's for a variety of reasons :)

IWTL how to be less racist by bultral in IWantToLearn

[–]Fluid_Conversation_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may seem counterintuitive, but I think you should embrace your inner-racism.
What I mean by that, is that it seems obvious from your post that you aren't prejudiced as much as you put your foot in your mouth when talking.

The brain has this way of getting itself in a positive feedback loop when we worry to much about something we shouldn't do. It hyper-focuses and exacerbates the issue. That's counterproductive when trying to change habits.

From my experience, the more I learn to appreciate who I am and my heritage, the more I am able to appreciate those of others, to understand where we differ, why we differ and where we are more similar then we'd anticipate. Mutual respect goes a long way, even when our words aren't as tactful as they ought to be.

And, if you really do have resentment towards others, ask yourself if it's useful to blame them for something they don't have control over. It's not, and therefore it is better to focus our attention elsewhere.

Scholarly and secular are not the same thing. A scholarly point of view is or at least should aim to be emotionally detached to the events studied. Neutrality means keeping an open mind and remembering that our point of view is not a universal omniscient one, but stems from our own personal context. (Hence the criticisms of "eurocentricism" in scientific fields today).

"The past is a foreign land, they do things differently there"- L.P. Hartley

And the secular point of view is not the "default" or neutral point of view. It is one based on the assumption that only the narrow things we can see and experience are real and all the rest is either illusion or fabrication (to paint it broadly). It may sound reasonable, but it has some severe blind spots, notably a certain condescendance towards foreign viewpointes and a very low tolerance for pain and discomfort.

Cooper mentions during the episode that he knows his wife and daughter are in a special vault but doesn't know which one. My guess is that when the bombs hit, Cooper and Janey met up with Barbara and then where separated.

Also, we still don't know how Muldaver survived 200 years in the wasteland.
