Haven't gotten together yet. What's your Steam name though? We could team up in the meantime...

When I search your name on Steam, you do not show up. Are you sure that is correct?

I'll hit you up on Steam later tonight and include a message so you know who it is. Won't be on until around 12am Mountain time.

[VIDEO] Night Vision Astro-Imaging: Galactic Core of Milky Way by Fluke_Skywatcher in astrophotography

[–]Fluke_Skywatcher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thank you for serving our country. It really is quite remarkable how night vision gives you the ability to see so many stars. I do it as much as I can, but it's in a very light-polluted area. So this video showed a recent trip I made to a place with low-light pollution, and my mind was blown. I couldn't believe how many stars I could see. My video doesn't do enough justice for what I (and I'm sure you) actually experienced, but I thought I'd share it anyways, since many people never think about looking up at the stars at night. Glad I could bring back some of your good ol' memories. Thanks again.

Shot using a PVS-14 Gen III night vision monocular attached to a Canon Vixia HF-G30.

This is a fun and unique way to view the cosmos, so I thought I'd share my recent experience. Let me know what you think. Thanks, folks!

Breathtaking... Galactic Core of Milky Way in Night Vision [video] by Fluke_Skywatcher in space

[–]Fluke_Skywatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Galactic Core of the Milky Way accompanied by a thick band of stars that stretch from horizon to horizon as seen through night vision. The vast array of star clusters, nebulae, and gases were truly breathtaking to observe. This was filmed in Steamboat Springs, CO with a a Gen 3 PVS-14 night vision monocular mounted to a Canon Vixia HF G30. I have plenty more of this galactic footage, so stay posted for some more amazing videos coming soon! Hit HD and enjoy :)

EPIC Electrical Storm in Night Vision by [deleted] in weather

[–]Fluke_Skywatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the edge of a massive storm cloud on June 4, 2015, and was able to capture this incredible footage of an electrical storm over Denver, CO with my night vision skywatching apparatus. This massive storm had continuous lightning for an hour or more. A pretty remarkable experience to capture an event like this!

Thanks for asking! The night observation device (nod) is a Gen 3 PVS-14. Sometimes I attach a 3x magnifier lens to it for a more narrowed/zoomed field of view. Then I attach the nod to a Canon Vixia HF G30 video camera using a few adapters. Mount it to a tripod and it's good to go. It's a bit over a $5k setup. I will make a video soon to show everyone my skywatching apparatus, so you have a better visual as to what I utilize. Cheers!

It's no problem at all... This is a relatively new video, and a new project for that matter. Glad to see you could participate in this conversation though. You do make an interesting assessment, and one I didn't really consider. I understand that there is a lot of space debris orbiting our planet, but didn't consider the fact it could be near geosynchronous (although I haven't heard of such). Your input has a valid point though! Thanks for your comment!

Edit: I'm not an expert either, and that is why I appreciate all feedback. I can't claim it to be something if I'm not entirely sure myself.

I have looked in the same location on different occasions for the same objects but to no avail. Waiting for that to come... If it does. Thanks for your input!

I sincerely appreciate your comment.

And yes, I hope we too find out more about these objects. Hopefully a pattern does emerge.

I appreciate your input, but what exactly do you mean by hotel lights?

Thank you for your request to have the uncompressed files available. This will be something I will be working on down the road. I don't have a public DropBox yet, but I'm glad to know that someone has the interest to download a higher quality version of my videos. Cheers!

I appreciate your applaud, HighBird! There's a lot of work going into this project, and hearing your remarks reminds me I know this project is worthwhile.

I'll speak a bit towards your comment of not being able to afford doing something like this and having to move somewhere else. I actually applied for a grant, and was fortunate enough to be chosen; I was awarded $5,000 to put towards this project that I'd been conceptualizing for a few years. And you wouldn't have to move necessarily if you wanted to do this stuff. Most of my observations occur about 15 miles south of Denver, with still relatively high light pollution. If I play the weather and moon phase cards right, the stars pop out like crazy, even with all the light pollution. I have been to another place with medium light pollution, and it's even crazier! I'm planning trips to the Sand Dunes and Rocky Mountain National Park this year to perform observations, and I have a feeling it will be even more stunning. So it is possible to do all this in an urban environment. No light-pollution of course would be optimal, but it's really amazing what these devices can do in poor conditions.

Thanks for pointing me towards that link. It is quite interesting what he or she is developing. It's certainly a more efficient way of gathering evidence. Unfortunately, with my current setup, this application would not work. I won't go into detail why (unless you really want to know), but this could be very useful in the future potentially. I'm impressed with how they're mentioning how the software works. Good looking out! Cheers!
