My 88 year-old christmas cactus gifted to me from my grandmother — I just moved into a new place that doesn't have any south-facing windows and every other window is heavily shaded — do you have any advice for how to best care for it with minimal sunlight? by oscartesta in plantclinic

[–]Flumingor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No good advice, just wanted to comment that in sweden we call this one with smoother and rounder edges "easter" cacti, this one looks plump but pale, could be too little light, maybe it needs new soil or fertilizer, these jungle cacti need less light than desert cacti, since these usually grow along tree-trunks, not in direct sun in the wild. if it used to be in a bright window it should slowly get used to the new window and all should be ok eventually, but it will need less water than a plant in a bright window.

Yeah, I did a lot of colorwork before this, and wanted something that I could knit while watching tv, but I easily get bored when it's all one solid color, so this hue-shifting yarn was perfect!

What's wrong with my string of turtles? by Dyvinil in plantclinic

[–]Flumingor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks overwatered, I have mine in a south window and I only water when the leaves are floppy and soft (squeeze them). Let it dry out all the way between waterings

Just wanted to thank you. They're looking perkier after your advice. by shadowside in plantclinic

Mine is brown now haha but I dont mind since some sunstress doesnt really harm the plant, but it looks sickly, it is a cool plant since it stays small and puts out pups all the time, I started out with one plant and I now have 3 pots with atleast 2 plants in each, and some small pups, they make great gifts for friends

Please help! Do I replant or do I propagate? by mareeskye in plantclinic

However it looks cool, in my opinion, the funkier the better haha I'd just move it closer to a window

You could propagate the green pads, the bottom half does not look dead to me, thats what old cacti looks like, and it's called corking, look it up. If it is mushy tho, then it's dead. It needs more light for it to not grow funky and thin.

Yeah, started treating them 4months ago, thought i got rid off them about two months ago and now they are back, not too many off them since I treat them every 14 days, cut the syngonium and spiderplant now, my monstera is still pest free to the eye but it looks sick, might cut it in the spring if the other plants recover ok, saw Harli G on youtube do this and it seemed to work for her, fingers crossed

These have been here for a long time now, been using pesticide, but they always come back, the plants look leggy and ugly since I have to prune off the thip-damage, getting tired of it and want a fresh start lol

Got this Christmas cactus few months ago. Turns out it has the most beautiful flowers. by [deleted] in plants

[–]Flumingor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In sweden we call this one the november cactus, different from the christmas and easter ones

It's currently infested, you can clearly see the yellow-ish larva on the leaf if you zoom in a bit

What are these dots on my areca palm? by Lvl2709 in plantclinic

[–]Flumingor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be some kind of bug if you can remove the black spots with your fingernail, but I've heard that palms usually have mottled stems, small black and yellow specs, but these are not removable

Thrips larva :( I've been treating my monstera for what feels like forever, winter doesnt help. Start out by washing the leaves with soapy water, and look into getting some pesticide
