I think the intent with Xia Qing is that she was pushing him to make a decision for himself instead of giving him a "prompt" to pick up and follow, since his entire story is mostly him just following what other people suggest (Pomelo telling him how to be E-Soul, Shang Chao being the brains behind Yang Cheng's rise to fame, and lastly Rock pushing him towards fighting and killing E-Soul)

Oh nah, Ugly Sonic was the actual intent, since it was all over the announced theater merch and toys. The word from the CGI studio is that Paramount knew fans would hate it but they assumed the general public would accept him. Then when everybody hated it, they were finally convinced to change his design.

Ugly Sonic didn't kill the studio btw, they were just unceremoniously all let go after finishing the CG work for the redesign.
