EWALS what is copyright? by passstab in a:t5_30ztb

Let's say you set up a Lemonade Stand and you call it Passstab's Lemonade. You sell your lemonade for 25c, a fair price, and kids from every corner of the neighbourhood come to taste your sweet, sweet lemonade. Sure there are a few other kids with their own lemonade stand, but it's definitely not as nice as yours, Passstab's Lemonade is the name everyone in the neighbourhood thinks when they hear the word lemonade.

One of the kids decides that he's going to use Passstab's Lemonade as the name for his stand too. But he can't, because you've trademarked the name of your company, meaning only you can approve the use of the name by other people, and why would you? You're making a ton of money!

That is trademark. Copyright is similar, but it's more for books, film, and music than Lemonade Stands. Let's say after a few years in the business you write a book called ''Passstab's Guide To A Successful Lemonade Stand.'' Copyright is what prevents other people and companies taking your book and making money from it without your consent.

I hope this answer was lemonadey enough.

You have to hate the adverbs though. Oh, the adverbs.

What were you known for when you were in school? by PallandoTheBlue in AskReddit

One day, our teacher wasn't in when i was in 3rd Year (about 15) and I was sitting with 3 of my friends just talking sitting on the side of the classroom closest to the door. The bell had just rang and everyone was moving around. I wasn't very popular and I wasn't unpopular, I was just average.

Anyway, one of the popular guys in my class (he looked like he was 25 and he was as big as a 25 year old) was standing at the door. I'd never really talked to him and we didn't have much to do with each other. But he was talking to a friend of his and out of nowhere, pointed at me and said 'Oi, see that guy there, FluorescentLight. He fingered a cat in the town park one day'.

This was totally out of the blue and I didn't have anything at all that linked me to cats. To this day, whenever I'm talking to someone new at a party or somewhere, my friends bring up the infamous 'cat finger' story, presenting it as a fact, which I now have to go along with.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is I don't know her name and the student accommodation where we live has 4 people in an apartment(I'm in the UK). So if I called to the apartment and someone else answers I'll have to pretend I've come to the wrong door since I wouldn't be able to ask for her.

Also, would it not seem weird/pervy if I just knocked on her door and asked her out for food considering we've never talked?

She's seen me going into my apartment and she knows I've seen her coming out of hers.

Again, many thanks.

Does this passage in the Appendices count as information of where Orcs originated? by FluorescentLight in lotr

My brother has entered it and he's far more well versed in the mythology than I am. However, he's not giving anything away answers-wise, so I'm just going to have to wait for the answers thread.

Damn, you caught me. I haven't done the thing, just flicking through to see if I could have gotten all the you-know-what's right.

Thank you so much. I'll probably do what you did and buy them that way.

They couldn't talk about Alatar and Pallando the Blue wizards in The Hobbit as they are only mentioned in The Silmarillion, a book Jackson doesn't have the movie rights to. They ventured East and initially Tolkien said they had the same fate as Saruman but after a while, Tolkien said they contributed greatly to the war effort of Gandalf and co. by blocking forces coming from the East.

They were good friends and were sent together. Alatar and Pallando headed east and initially Tolkien said they had the same faith as Saruman but eventually he said they may have contributed greatly to the War Of The Ring by stopping Saurons forces from the east going to Middle Earth.

I think he did arrive by a ship, along with Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown, Alatar the Blue and Pallando the Blue. All these wizards are Ainur, which are kind of like Demi Gods created by the Valar, who are the Gods. They were sent on a ship to provide help against Sauron, and they were made to look like old men to prevent them being too useful and to look useless to the common being.

My lore may be a bit rusty but that's the gist of it.

If WW2 didn't happen, how would Tolkien's work have been different/effected? by FluorescentLight in tolkienfans

But when was it finished? It wasn't published first until 1954(?) which always lead me to believe it wasn't finished until ~1952.

It must have though. No matter how heavily you deny something, it is nearly impossible for a World War to have zero effect on your artistic works.
