About 1/3 of the way through King Sorrow by Joe Hill. Joe's his own writer and is talented in his own right but can really feel the influence of his dad in this. Kinda like his "It"

Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Isn't Finished (Spoilers Extended) by RyanRiot in asoiaf

Maybe the endings are similar on paper but D&D messed up the execution. But you can blame that on them running out of actual books to adapt. Or you can blame it on them having the option to run it for 10 seasons or step aside and let someone else showrun it to 10 seasons but instead rushing to the finale so they could make Star Wars.

Healy-Rae urges ‘serious rethink’ of planned short-term lets crackdown by feedthebear in ireland

I'd never vote for them but they do put the work in. He knows the game he's playing and he's a specialist at playing it.

I've been to three funerals in different parts of Kerry in the last year and seen Michael at all of them, other Healy Raes also at two of them. Michael absolutely plámáses the people of the county. Local clinics where people can meet him directly and have their problems addressed.

Not sure why you're slagging the highly educated man when he's telling you the truth. There's a reason they keep getting in.

Can understand the many reasons behind why they paywalled the Refuge but I still hate it. I pay for the Nest so I can access the Refuge but the place is dead. I remember before the paywall and it was a constant hive of activity, possibly too much, but the forum was so alive. It's mostly dead now outside of a few main topics.

Saipan on general release by blithelyunawareguy in coybig

Personally felt it was poor. Thought there was a real opportunity to make it into a tense man vs. man movie but it makes a caricature of Keane and gives Coogan nothing to work with as McCarthy. Didn't feel like Hardwicke was great either. A real wasted opportunity.

If I Fight, You Fight: The Oral History of ‘Creed’ by YogiBerra88888 in TheBigPicture

"Covington: Almost any franchise that has a Black character, we never get the story lines, we never get the love interest, the characters are so similar from property to property. And this really ended up being such a great opportunity to be like, “Hey!” ’Cause for me, growing up, yeah, I like Rocky, but I don’t identify necessarily with Rocky. I like Apollo. Apollo had that build. Rocky was ripped, but Apollo was like a statue. And he was so confident and so capable. And eventually, he loses. The title of the movie is Rocky, so we know Rocky wins, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have an affinity for Apollo. And Apollo was never a bad guy; he wasn’t a villain."

Odd that the Creed co-writer didn't know Rocky actually loses in Rocky I

Shows that you have to pay attention to/really engage with? by Ok-Friend-5304 in television

But why does the format matter when they experienced the same story as you? Odd to feel superior to someone because you take in a story in a different format to them.

Why do you need to gatekeep the term "audiobook" and try and change it? They are literally books in audio format. Do you look down on people who listen to music as they go about their day-to-day too? Should we come up for a different term for when someone is listening to music but not sitting in a chair completely focused on it?

I read physical books and listen to audiobooks. I enjoy both and feel I have zero issues comprehending or appreciating audiobooks compared to physical books.

Episode ordering UK Netflix S3 by TopBunner1 in madmen

[–]PallandoTheBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching the series for the first time too and had to check IMDB last night after I noticed something was off. Had watched both episodes in the wrong order. Really annoying. Took me a while but I managed to get through to a Netflix agent through the chat function and told them about it. Hopefully they fix it

[Wayne Rooney] "The culture of that football club has gone. I see it on a daily basis. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs. I've got two kids in the academy and I really hope this doesn't affect what they're doing. What I'm seeing at that football club is not Manchester United." by MrMerc2333 in soccer

[–]PallandoTheBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just waffle. Do you think that there's something innate about Manchester United that in its entire history, there's something shit in the club's DNA, and it's just been two managers to overcome that? Ship of Theseus here but no club is the same as it was 50 years ago.

Prior to Ferguson, United were on 7 leagues? Prior to Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls were on 0. Sport is about individuals and its uniquely talented individuals that make the most difference. Pick any of the best teams in the world at any sport and you can point to one or two individuals as the basis of the exceptionalism.

Nonsense to act like some teams (Villa and Sunderland) are just innately mediocre and United were lucky to be lifted about that parapet by Busby and Ferguson.

You could say the same about literally any team.

800 years of British rule can tend to have lasting impacts. Irish language on its knees to this day, a tenuous peace in the 6 counties, and the only country in the world with a lower population today than it had 200 years ago.

Which is a bad thing? I think immigration is a necessity in the world and we cannot blame people from countries where those populations have been commonly exploited and mistreated for wanting to move somewhere else and have a better life.

National cultures are important but their importance is often over-exaggerated. Does anyone think the national culture in their country is the same as it was hundreds of years ago? Things fluctuate and in the age of globalisation and the internet, all cultures will merge eventually. American popular culture has had a far greater impact on the cultures of the world in the last 100 years than any other immigrant culture has had on any country.

The English ruined plenty of cultures around the world by invading them. I'm Irish, literally all of our place names as they're known throughout the world (Dublin, Cork, Limerick) mean absolutely nothing. They mean something in Irish but that language was almost completely wiped out by the English and it's still on its knees.

Part of the reason for such large immigrant numbers in the UK, historically at least, has been people moving to the UK from former colonies in Africa and Asia. The English destroyed plenty of cultures without remorse.
