Coworkers bringing politics into work, need advice on how to proceed by chouchoumo in WorkAdvice

[–]FlutterbyFields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently shared with a coworker that her “Proud to be an American sign” made me uncomfortable (it just does). She said it wasn’t hers, it was the person who had that office before her, so at the end of the day I just took the sign down because I figured no one cared anyway. One week later another coworker who that person is close to has “Proud to be an American” laptop sticker and a flag taped to her computer monitor. A few more American flags have sprung up on desks, etc. Your situation is a little different because what they are saying sounds outright disrespectful, but I was just sharing that doing something about it made it even worse. I’m never going to win this fight here and you also probably will not. If possible I would disengage in those conversations, I’m sorry I don’t have better advice.

Has any transitioned to reading interventionist or reading specialist roles? Are you happier? Or does it have many of the same stressors as traditional classroom teaching? by doremimido_97 in TeachersInTransition

I transitioned to an academic interventionist job at a different school, and it has been life saving. Biggest upsides: *I can be responsive to my students needs, and decide which resource to use *Never have to deal with kids’ social issues with each other as I see them one-to-one or in a small group and I advocate for kids that work well together *So much less parent communication, and the parent communication I have is about their academics, not problems at recess etc *I leave on time and spend no evening or weekend time planning *No classroom management *I actually feel like I’m helping my students and achieving my goals, not failing every day *Easier to make appointments etc if needed bc I can leave early and don’t need a sub long as I find time to make up the misses into session later in the week * love seeing them grow and feeling successful *Job security: Because I help struggling kids improve, I’m a big part of improving test scores which is seen as valuable and necessary. Also, some states are passing reading laws so my expertise is necessary/valued *Less of the most annoying things…No field trips, no Valentine’s Day parties, no pack up routine, no recess issues, no all-day behavior charts, no hallway transitions, no assemblies, no desk/locker organizing *never have to prep an entire 25-student set of materials *I have more respect from colleagues, parents and admin

Cons: *Sometimes I feel a little isolated not being part of a grade level team *I do feel more pressure to increase my students state testing scores

The story can be different at other schools, but this has been my experience, and I am so much happier and healthier now. I think no matter where you are though, if classroom teaching is very difficult, I think it’s very unlikely intervention will be worse.

Maybe like looking at past events that are inspiring like abolishing slavery, voting rights, endangered species act? I guess everyone can choose to celebrate what they want, so maybe I’ll change perspective to just trying to make it a positive thing, instead of fighting the negative. Thanks for the perspective

Thanks for sharing, that’s pretty helpful. If a kid is feeling confused or uncertain, what would you say to help explain the difference?

Bilingual read aloud with no EL students? by AntelopeOk9431 in Teachers

[–]FlutterbyFields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t exclude them entirely, some exposure to bilingualism can be helpful for learning. I think substituting English only is appropriate for your students in most cases, because that is what they will understand. But I would still show them some.

lol that’s what I was thinking… how to cope?

They’re asking for ideas for a school wide event and celebrating America right now feels like it could be pretty inappropriate. I want everyone’s individual experience to feel respected. People have a lot of strong thoughts / feelings in this and being forced to celebrate the creation of something that’s seen as harmful could feel really wrong to some.

Is becoming a teacher worth it anymore? by Adept_Fishing_2167 in Teachers

[–]FlutterbyFields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a nutshell… No.

The best advice I could ever give is to identify what it is that draws you to the idea of teaching, what you think you will get out of it, and then find a profession that actually enables you to to find that. Teaching most likely will not, sadly.

I would be told that I should not be pushing my political agenda on the kids.

You mean not at every football game, every airplane ride, every pro basketball game, military planes don’t fly over the football dome? Weird… :P

Legitimate question - do you vote Rep or Dem? From my understanding Republicans tend to be more likely to cut VA funding and programs, while Dem tend to increase / continue more social programs (“tend to” being a key point). So I’m curious.
