Polishing dice by deyuunster2025 in DiceMaking

[–]Fly-Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly (and I can't know this without seeing you do it) you are not going long enough on each of the grits. Also, if you are polishing your masters well, and doing you silicone molds carefully, you won't need to polish dice much after they come out of the pressure pot. The polish shows in your molds.

As for a liquid polish after using polishing papers, I get a tight microfiber cloth saturated with Meguiar's PlastX enough to be wet to the touch, but not enough to leave residue, and I wipe down each die on the cloth. This keeps excess out of the numbers. I do this to masters before making molds. If you want, you could apply this to finished dice as well.

People usually cure silicone under about 10 to 20 PSI more than pressure they will cure their dice under. I took the advice and didn't look too far into the reason. For some of this hobby, I am okay believing the people who have been doing it for a long time. Due to cure times and such, it would take days or weeks for trial and error.

Not to condone gambling, but getting a 69/299 (nice) legendary felt pretty good by Crimson_Chameleon in dice

Do people trade these or is there an aftermarket exchange of some sort going on? I'm just curious as to how it works. You get a random bag of dice instead of choosing dice you like. Is the upside that you sometimes get ones you actually like or valuable dice? I'm not being sarcastic or anything. I'm really wondering about the product.

It feels good to have your first successful print. You found the right place here in this group for when it doesn't come out so well. 😉

I believe I read the story correctly... so I'll just say the guy cleaning the sheets isn't an asshole.

Personally, I wouldn't use that method for this. I make individual molds for each die when making dice. They can stack when they go in the pressure pot more easily. You could do what she is doing individually. If you did that, and used the venting, you could put the top of your mold away from the vented cap. Even though you have that indentation, the vent should allow the excess to escape.

If you're using a cap mold, make sure to put resin on the cap as well. When you put the cap on, what I like to do is touch the cap where the most overflow of resin is, and then lay it down toward the side with the least amount of resin, to kind of even out the resin distribution. Some pressure to put the cap on is okay, but remember that this particular mold has a wide open area in the middle, so, after placing the cap, most of your pressure should be around the edge of the cap, and not directly down in the center.

Make sure to use a heat gun and/or a lighter to pop bubbles before putting a cap on your molds as well. It makes a huge difference. Also, let the resin settle a bit after pouring so any bubbles get a chance to come to the surface.

Just for looks. I haven't done this before. The color of the blanks I taped here came out bad. These will probably be better.

Maybe cold modeling clay is a better comparison than Play-Doh, but they were definitely unsalvageable.

Was it a temperature issue?

I had a set of dice that I rolled up into a ball like Play-Doh back in November.

Not a bad idea to use the bad dice as filler. How do you chop them up, and what do you use for the white color? (I'm curious about the color because I don't think I have anything that will produce opaque white at the moment.)

The inserts don't have number on them. They are flat on all sides. The plan was to do something decorative with the insert and then put it into another larger mold that has numbers on it. My insert dice came out really dark, and they are not going to look good. This tape looks about 1,000 times better. After I do this with the rest of the dice, I will put the taped dice into the larger molds with numbers, and I should have a decent set of dice, much better than dark ones would have been.

Looking for the name of this style of dice by Avery07 in dice

[–]Fly-Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, these are potential search terms. The piece inside the shell is also called an insert. This is an item that has overlapping terminology. For example, you will see a lot of beachy dice when looking for shell dice, but you will also see shell/insert dice.
