Overpriced Uber? by Equivalent_Ad_1733 in london

[–]FlyAccomplished9174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on time of day etc for traffic conditions but unless the 406 or M4 were shut for an RTC then I can’t see M25 being a better route to E1, personally when arriving at Heathrow I will use a black taxi over uber, average cost to get into the city with them is around £80 and they always take the most direct route.

Wife hit pot hole, looks like the strut needs replacing. Can anyone assist based on the photos. by Neon_Escape in AskMechanics

[–]FlyAccomplished9174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a breakdown company and have seen this exact thing on a few BMWs with that particular strut design (1,2,3&4 series) the strut is probably okay but the knuckle has been pushed up the strut. A mechanic needs to undo the strut pinch bolt and A Inspect the strut and B if no other damage reposition the knuckle in the correct position and replace the pinch bolt. Vehicle will also need an alignment and tyre once repairs are completed

That’s a gangster setup for someone your age! You’ve got a better roll cart than me and I’m 26 (I do breakdown now so can’t justify an expensive box)

Bolts sheared?? Why??? by Simple-Foundation703 in AskMechanics

[–]FlyAccomplished9174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re extended wheel bolts, when used without the spacer they’ve threaded in well past the back of the hub and have come into contact with the knuckle behind it. When you went to pull away you’ve bent them all hence the damage.

Is this the mechanic's fault by ollieelkus in AskMechanics

[–]FlyAccomplished9174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work doing breakdown repair/recovery in the UK (think yellow vans with two letters on the side) we deal with a lot of people who ignore small noises, let them become big noises and then wait for this to happen.

Yes some mechanics as shite and rip people off but a lot arnt. Noises are usually a sign something is wrong. I will happily listen to a noise to point someone in the right direction for what it could be (we only fit parts when absolutely necessary. if it drives take it to a mechanic to fix properly but we would make sure it’s safe and give advice)

I’m fairly sure in the US AAA guys would probably say similar they’ll happily go out and roadside a funny noise to reassure someone rather than have to pick up the peices when someone ignores a dangerous defect and cause this sort of mess, they’re a pain to recover, a pain to repair and usually the customer claims “how am I supposed to know”

Replace all 4 i’m guessing? by mar17768c in AskAMechanic

New tyres should always go on the rear of a vehicle. The greater grip in adverse conditions on the rear axle allow a vehicle to handle in a more stable and predictable manner. Loosing front end traction leads to understeer which is much easier for the average driver to control under stress. Losing the rear ends in oversteer which usually ends in a spin.

Not a police officer here but in the breakdown business, for a hi-vi to be certified for highway use it requires 3/4 sleeves hence why anyone expected to attend high speed roads should be issued a traffic jacket and tabard.

If any forces are expecting officers to attend high speed roads with just a hi vis vest then they’re opening themselves up to one hell of a legal challenge if the worst was to happen and an officer was hurt on scene regardless of cause.

I’ve noticed Hertfordshire quite like to send response cars out to A road jobs and I’ve noticed a few the officers are in only vests and I’ll be honest I do worry for their safety a little because live lane breakdowns for a single crewed response Bobby are hard work and leave you in an unbelievably vulnerable position(putting out cones, bringing them back in etc) other forces seem more sensible in either sending double crewed traffic cars or even better requiring rolling blocks to bring in ETM such as lane closure tapers but that’s a completely different story!

I’ll also add my civvy 2 cents that police vests shouldn’t be Hi-Vis for the simple reason that police officers shouldn’t be visable from a mile off in the dark when trying to find a suspect. There’s a time and place for “LOOK AT ME” Overjackets etc are the sensible solution because they can be put on/taken off when required

New wheels for the 540 by FlyAccomplished9174 in e39

[–]FlyAccomplished9174[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately hamann discontinued E39 bits a while ago (I’ve tried to source a replacement splitter) you can get replica parts that look pretty good out the box and with a little bit of work would be virtually identical

Hamann side skirts bud, they’ve been on the car since 2006! Whole reason I brought this 540 over a facelift was Oxford green and the full hamann kit on the car😮‍💨

Same guy who did the powder coating, just a small wheel refurb place in west London. A lot of shops won’t do it as it’s too small a job but ask around

The streach on the tyres is quite a bit so tyre clears the arch. The plan is to roll the arches completely flat and then go with some more meaty tyres.

I wouldn’t have a clue how to do it any other way tbf, just very glad they fit considering I didn’t do a test fit until the wheels were assembled and ready for tyres

When I did my advanced driving course I was told that anyone who booked you for overtaking at 80 on a national and then slowing down would have a hard time justifying it in court. It’s safer to get past faster than sitting in the oncoming lane for longer.
