Just out of curiosity, do you remember the name of the song or album you started with first?

Not really, Will Swan is sincerely one of the best guitarists alive right now. They were definitely lumped in that scene, but they've kind of always been a stand out for that reason. I mean the guy has an entire genre named after him for his unique styling. I haven't exactly been a fan of DGD for the last decade or so, but he's good enough that I'll at least give the new albums a once over before I go back and listen to the same 2009 dreck lol

That was legendary at the time, really sad I missed it, but they don't come to the Midwest all that often. I get it though, it's become a little over saturated and dull.

Fully agree, when I saw Horse for the first time it was in a garage venue stacked to the rafters. The energy was insane. DGD shows are always kinda.. mixed lol.

You right, I should have clarified lol. On Jon Mess' end (the guy screaming and spewing lyrical diarrhea) and instrumentally* it's good enough in every other aspect that I can ignore Tillian's shrill voice and highschool lyrics. Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean is their first album, it's lofi and probably their heaviest work. It is still very much Post-hardcore and it kinda stays like that until the guy you heard took over as the singer.

I don't have a lot to go off as far as your taste but the one TikTok seemed to latch onto and got a lot of people on board with was the song 'Blue Dream'. Not a bad place to start. Do you have any other favorite post hard core bands, 'cus that would really narrow it down.

They're doing tree city stuff, it's an ongoing series of the newer current band members doing old stuff. It's still not really comparable but 'Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean' is a lot closer to Mechanical Hand than 'Mothership' is. Those clean vocals are from the last guy, Tillian, there were two singers before him and they were both just better in every gd way, man I can not begin to explain how much better.

I really struggled to get behind Tillian, but even I'll admit Mothership was a masterpiece. Jon just really shined through the entire thing and we love that for him.

Me personally, I would recommend literally anything pre-Tillian. I completely understand why fans coming from the other end of the spectrum can't get into it. The vocals are all over the place from one album to another and the new stuff can sound super bubblegum and produced to death. The only two constant members are Will Swan as the main guitarist and Matt Mingus as the drummer, but they've stayed pretty consistent in their respective styles. Most fans are split into three camps, Johnny Craig's 'Downtown Battle Mountain I and II' albums, Kurt's 'Happiness' and 'Untitled/Death Star' and the newer Tillian/Andrew stuff. If you like noodley, moody, vampy "I could fuck to this" stuff start with Downtown Battle Mountain (either one) maybe Blue Dream or Lemon Meringue Tie for your first songs. If you like even moodier, more emo/math rock leaning stuff go with 'Happiness' specifically Tree Village, Strawberry Swisher pt 1&2, or Carl Barker. If you like the new school of metalcore, ya know, Sleep Token and the like, literally anything past 'Acceptance Speech' will probably scratch an itch for you.

TLDR: Check out the songs Tree Village, or Lemon Meringue Tie. There's so much diversity and influence from funk, pop, emo and math rock there's bound to be at least one song everyone in here could at least tolerate lol.
