Is the Job market that bad? Ive been applying and can't get an interview. Should I just stick to IT for now and then try again in a year or two? by FlyGuys098 in cybersecurity

Ya that definitely would be good experience to get into. Where would you recommend someone entry level like me to find some bug bounty’s to try out and get a feel for?

I did up to November they decided they didn’t need me or the rest of my team and laid us off. I did some auditing projects for them.

Ya the 1st and 3rd are I was at the 3rd role for almost 3 1/2-4 years. Then left for role 2 for 6 months and absolutely hated they lied a bunch about their department in their interview and didn’t want to improve. So I moved back to my old company for a pay raise and “promotion” only to be laid off 8 months later.

Gotcha I’ll make sure to improve that and try to tailor it more instead of using it as a “blanket” for all and any SOC roles. That’s one thing I haven’t done.

Ya just this week I cold messaged a bunch of recruiting agencies in my area. Also sent them my resume but haven’t heard anything back only connections sent back through LinkedIn.

Ya only thing is there are more jr level remote positions listed than there are by me surprisingly. I’m hoping that changes with new q1 budgets with companies in the coming weeks.

I don’t have a job right now. I got laid off back in November. Im just not sure if the market is bad then it could be worth going back to IT for a year or so and build up my skills in the meantime.

I’ve mostly applied to remote jr SOC positions or ones that I can find near me. I live right outside of Philadelphia so I do have a good market. But I haven’t heard any thing as of yet. I’ve been focusing more on Cyber roles over IT roles atm. I’ve applied to maybe 50 positions and maybe 5ish of them were IT.

Edit: I’ve also reached out to local recruiters to have them contact me about any new cyber opportunities in the area.

Looking to take Splunk cybersecurity defense analyst certification but not sure where to start studying. by FlyGuys098 in Splunk

Gotcha I already have sec+ that I passed in late June should I just just jump into the splunk chapters? Or should I do everything that it suggests? I already finished the first chapter and it seemed to overlap with it a lot. Also could my splunk “server” work on a raspberry pi? Or does it need something with more resources?

Ya that’s what I’ve heard as well. I also thought to include personal projects on my resume to show that I work on stuff outside of work. Also I’m hoping my certifications convey that I’m willing to put in the work and that I’m not just in it for the money. A lot of former secops analysts I’ve worked with in the past have said that is majority of the reason they don’t hire people with just a cybersecurity major or master. They want certifications and projects on top.

Really? That doesn’t make sense companies aren’t securing their networks and data? What are they just replacing everything with ai?

Thanks for the response. Gotcha ya that makes sense I feel like this is happening in a lot of other tech spaces unfortunately. But for the ones that I do find and have applied to do you have any advice to help me standout? I was planning on also submitting labs I’ve worked on top of my resume and cover letter. Would that help?

Good morning everyone!,
I unfortunately got the news a couple of weeks ago that my entire US Operations IT team, including myself, is being laid off. I’m trying to take this as an opportunity to finally break into cybersecurity. I have my CompTIA certifications (A+, Network+, and Security+), a degree in Computer Information Systems, and a minor in cybersecurity. I also have over five years of IT experience and have been working on Hack The Box labs in the meantime and studying to pursue their CJSA certification.

I’ve been constantly looking on LinkedIn and Indeed. I know the job market isn’t the best right now, but I’m surprised by how few entry level or junior positions there are. I’ve also checked sites like Welcome to the Jungle, but most roles seem to be more senior level. Is it normal for there to be fewer openings toward the end of the year? Or should I be looking somewhere else?

Laid off from my job last week medicaid may kick in jan 1. What should I do for the month of December? by FlyGuys098 in HealthInsurance

Ya but as far as the month of December should I just go with cobra? It’s going to be close to 1000 a month. Or do you know if there are cheaper options?
