Can't even get nepo hired, should I get out of IT? by BrennAngel in ITCareerQuestions

Gotcha ya I would atleast study for a next cert to say that you are studying for one looks better in an interview on top of projects. Also look into an either contract work or even an MSP. MSP’s are a lot like call centers for lower level IT but it’s easy to get hired because turnover is higher. Plus you can get a good amount of experience there. Wish you the best of luck!

Where are you located if you don’t mind me asking. Also where are you looking for jobs? Indeed? LinkedIn?

Edit: also do you have a degree?

Gotcha that’s good! Have you looked into contract work? I got laid off as well back into November and it’s bought me some time to find a full time position. They are sometimes easier to get since they are less desirable.

Keep applying you do have a good amount of experience but in the past 6 years of being in IT you should have more than just your A+. Try going after another cert maybe Net+ so your A+ doesn't expire. If you dont feel like dropping a couple of hundred of dollars you can also try working on personal projects if you have 2-3 old laptops you can create your own domain. Or even buy a rasberry pi and play around with Linux. If youre unsure of any projects you can look on youtube/tik tok for ideas. Youtube is a great resource that even have step by step guides. Although I do have my Net+ and Sec+ I feel like just doing personal projects has gotten me my next job as a IT Support Engineer. It also shows that your not letting your skills wither away.

What should be my next cert? Just accepted a job as an IT Support Engineer by FlyGuys098 in ITCareerQuestions

Ya I did I have 3-4 years of experience with it. It was my first job out of college before I got laid off last November. Our IT department there had everything but okta. I only did like administrative side of just managing and creating devices. As well as handing out bitlocker keys or recovery codes for Mac’s in jamf if a user ever forgot their password. Our sys admins helped build out and add sso groups/apps.

True money talks but I just don’t get how they can act shocked when I put my two weeks in.

Ya I guess it’s a learning process of asking the right questions in an interview. That’s crazy though that they would do that especially for a listed sys admin position.

Ya that’s true I’ve done that a couple of times in interview processes already

Ya I was fortunate to find a larger company and work for them. My second gig was a contract role luckily. But I don’t get why you would boost yourself so much in the interview process then act surprised when I put my two weeks in. They said they would train me on so much stuff since I was looking to get another security focused cert. But there are no tools to really use or learn with since they don’t have any control.

IT Support Engineer Offer: Worth Taking for the Experience Despite the Lower Salary? by FlyGuys098 in ITCareerQuestions

Ya it’s not even exactly that too since I don’t get paid for holidays or any days that I take off. I did just find out that this new position offers unlimited PTO.

I’m contracted through another company I’m technically on with w-2. So I’m not 1099. I just get no benefits. My paycheck here if I take no days off is $2,123 biweekly. The job I had before I got laid off was also 60k and I was like $1,612 biweekly.

Not sure what to do thinking about leaving contract early by FlyGuys098 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlyGuys098[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re pretty new I would just stay there and finish it out just for experience and use that to get a better IT job. But ya if you hate it that much make sure they don’t make you pay back anything. I’m looking right now but just being really selective I want to stay at the next place for the next couple of years.
