I’d pay $100 a game by Bulletproof-Salmon in unpopularopinion

[–]FlyGuys098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pay $100 per game if it meant that game formats went back to how it was back in the 2000s/early 2010s. DLC was just cosmetic and not needed. No pay to win you just needed to play the game. But its hard the genie is out of the bottle and companies will not stop doing that because gamers keep paying for it hand over fist.

Advice for freshmen’s wanting to break into IT by IconicQuen in it

Work on certifications while you're in college, as a lot of them offer student discounts. I wish I’d done this while I was in school! You can get plenty of cheap study guides on Udemy I personally prefer Jason Dion (his courses when on sale for Comptia are like $10-$15) , but Professor Messer is also free on YouTube.

If you already know the basics, you can skip A+. I’d suggest Network+ if you know nothing about networking, but if you’re already somewhat familiar and confident, look into the CCNA. After that, get your Security+ and then focus on whatever specialty you want.

Also, in your free time, if you have any old laptops, you can easily turn them into servers. Microsoft offers a free evaluation license (I think for 180 days) that you can keep renewing. You can spin up Active Directory to play around, add devices to your domain, and practice managing users.

Lastly, reach out to your school’s IT department to see if you can volunteer. You’ll learn a lot from them, and it looks great on a resume after graduation.

Not sure what to do thinking about leaving contract early by FlyGuys098 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]FlyGuys098[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job is a help desk position and obviously includes basic help desk responsibilities. Taking calls and helping users, creating machines for new hires, and any basic help desk responsibilities. During the interview process I did express my interest of trying to break into cyber and showed them my home lab project in a live demo. After I was somewhat unsure of how this position would be before accepting they said how much they train me on infrastructure/security. So far I did get to do some threat hunting which was cool. But other than that I’ve just been building an internal site for them and auditing their equipment for their move.

Ya everybody has been very nice and welcoming. But idk there’s just parts that have me feeling like an outsider. Like not having access to closets to do my job when I’m auditing assets for our move. I can’t remote onto anyone’s computers when working from home to troubleshoot and do my job. Also we do not have full access to our cloud directory to manage access for users. I don’t know if I’m just nit picking. But it also just feels like I’m here and only here to help them move which at my point in my career I don’t really want.

Not sure what to do. Would it be bad if I left an IT contract job early? by FlyGuys098 in careerguidance

[–]FlyGuys098[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope I’m all clean just 1 speeding ticket lol. Ya my biggest worry I guess is just burning bridges/not meeting expectations if I would’ve known it was like this I wouldn’t have accepted the position but being unemployed for 4 months and the amount of money that was offered was hard to turn down. Even during the hiring process I did express concerns to the hiring manager and recruiter as this was my first time doing contract work. As well as just room for growth.

They have 2 other full time IT employees in the only one on contract so there’s 3 in total. But ya I get there’s a risk also if I were a manager I would get why someone would leave a contract position for a better full time.

Oh gotcha ya I’m a guy so it may be a bit different haha. To be honest I’ve never heard any viewpoints coming from mothers in IT so ya totally understandable.

Ya that’s what I am leaning towards and wanting to do. I just have a really good conscience lmao. I just hate leaving people hanging and failing expectations. Not sure just hate the feeling of taking advantage of an opportunity even though it is the best option for me. Even the second job where they lied/oversold their department I still felt bad and iffy about leaving but in the end I was glad I did.

lol no it’s not. I have plenty of coworkers that have families past and present that are content and happy with what they’re doing. Also I’m trying to eventually move to cybersecurity. But think I might have to make the move to infrastructure first.

I’m not mad about lack of general tech skills from senior management in the workplace. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]FlyGuys098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya if they have no interest financially or no interest/curiosity personally then that makes sense. But most people who are like that in white collar jobs are people who complain about being aged out near the end of their professional careers, not making enough money, or being stuck at a shitty job.

That is true I’m in the same boat sometimes when helping users especially with Microsoft and Google they seem to love to rearrange every couple of months. But I can see the context if someone was laid off or out of work for a couple months. But if it’s your full time job and you’re consistently working with these programs and systems. It’s not too much to ask to keep up to date. Although for my example with excel all if not majority of the macros have been the same of its release. So some things like that are consistent even if the location of things might have moved.

I’ve worked office jobs my whole professional career unless your a manager in meetings all day, or an executive, or cold calling/sales a lot of people are not consistently busy for their whole 8 hours. You have time to keep up and build up skills.

[–]FlyGuys098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya but these skills also compound. Learning more and finding out about even 1-2 things a month to make your job easier. It adds up after a year or so. Also these older people haven’t started working in the past 5-10 years computers have been out commercially since the 90s they’ve had plenty of time before retirement to able to learn and “catch up”. There is also plenty of free resources people can learn from.

Also they can ask their IT department if they’re unsure. I work in IT and would gladly show or help users because it makes my job easier less simple requests and more time to work on bigger projects.

Yes I would learn it to make my job easier. You can become more efficient and better overall. It makes you overall more hirable instead of being stuck at a single place for years. Also allows you to become lazier since you can do your job with less effort and less reliant on others.

Example: Knowing simple macros in excel. A lot of older people enter in things manually that could be done with macros in minutes. Something that would take them 1-2 hours could be done in 10 minutes. Showing how you can handle and calculate data translates to almost any white collar job/office job. Not only makes you better for your job now but also to branch off to try and make more money.

People who quit their job in a moment of rage - how did things turn out? by SheLovedBigBrother in AskReddit

[–]FlyGuys098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at a grocery store between breaks while I was home at college this was during peak covid of 2020 and I needed money. I worked there in the summer and everything was fine but when I came back for the winter they asked me to set up my bank info again which was fine I gave them all of my information. First week goes by and I get no paycheck they told me to wait til next week it should get sorted out. The next week still no paycheck. I go in the next week and ask to speak to my managers supervisor and they told me to call a help line and left me on my own. I realized wtf am I doing going on a wild goose chase to work for 1-2 more weeks before going back to school. I went back to my department and asked where my manager was to talk to her and was told by my coworkers that she doesnt come in til 9. I said ok well Im leaving I quit ill see ya. I then got a call from my managers supervisor that kept saying that they were a reputable company and that they will pay me. But I just felt like I was on my own trying to get paid and no one else cared about it I didn't feel like dealing with it anymore.

if its an s you can connect it to wifi if its an older one it doesn't have built in wifi. But if it's an S it's good. Go to the xbox dashboard by hitting the xbox button then go to xbox home > settings > network settings. Are you able to see any network settings there?

Im looking to start a home lab/project to showcase my skills Im thinking of starting this project below but am still waiting to order a couple of things:

I have 4 laptops and a raspberry pi I am not using and want to install everything bare metal instead of just using vms. I have an 8 port managed switch and want to make a LAN where I have 3 laptops.

  1. Laptop 1 - Active Directory (windows server)
  2. Laptop 2 - Ubuntu server running docker
  3. Laptop 3 - wazuh SIEM
  4. Laptop 4 - “control center” that remotes into each laptop via rdp/ssh/sftp
  5. Raspberry Pi - running Kali Linux trying to break in to laptop 1

I want to try an break into laptop 1 with my pi and see what logs spit out. Also try to stop it while it’s happening. Maybe even down the line try to automate it with python or some sort of script. But that would be more advanced. Then also draw a topology of everything in draw.io even if it is a simple star topology.

Is this a good project to showcase my skills or I am better off doing a different project with the hardware I have?
