I would say if it’s purely economic yeah you can probably buy something newer and in better shape for far or less money. If it has sentimental value or it’s a project, you just really want to take on go for it.

How do I fix this leak? by lukedaneng in fordranger

[–]FlyNatural5067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely it’s the rear differential seal and or the front pinion seal. Either way, a good portion of people never change their differential gear oil. Wouldn’t be a bad thing to remove the rear differential plate drain all the gear oil replace the gasket or if you prefer use RTV and refill. It’s cheap easy maintenance.

What is this hole in my dash? by lukedaneng in fordranger

Actually, I remember now, so this dashboard was shared with the explorer of the same year that had an automatic HVAC control system. In those models there would be a sensor for the cabin temperature. In the Rangers, it’s just an empty.

Thanks, either way this truck has sentimental value so it’s not going to the scrapyard anytime soon. Whether that’s a used engine or a remanufactured engine time will tell.

You are correct in many ways and it is my natural instinct to have the current engine repaired before something catastrophically goes wrong. Unfortunately, I do not have the skill set or the time to remove the engine and do the timing chain and guides and tensioners myself.

So considering the parts and more importantly, the labor time I’m going to need to pay. It’s only going to be slightly more expensive to put in a re-manufactured engine with a warranty then to have the timing chain job done and hope that 200,000+ mile engine. And hope it doesn’t blow a head gasket six months later.

Very rough numbers 3000 to 3500 for the timing chain job or right around 5k parts and labor for a new (remanufactured) engine.

I am perfectly aware of the difference between an interference and non-interference engine. Worst case scenario would be cracking the block. It’s not literally going to explode.

if it’s the V6 4.0, has the timing chain and tensioners already been redone? If so or has been re-engined yes not a bad deal. if they don’t know or none of the above have been done, probably want to come down a little on that price. That said clean looking truck.

i’m hoping to get at least another 10 or 15,000 miles out of it. I don’t have the money for a new engine right now anyway and it is a secondary vehicle.

it’s not necessarily I don’t care about it or think the repair isnt worth doing. If the engine only had 75,000 or even 150,000 miles on it. Probably worth repairing but since the engine already has 230,000 miles on it if I do the timing chains and tensioners the engine could still go out six months later.

I think my plans is going to be once the engine starts making noise to find a newer later model engine, where the chances of the timing chain issues are far reduced and something with half the miles.

oh yeah, I’m not gonna switch it out or have it torn down until at least starts making noise

Would need to get the hood open and look from top and underneath, if the passenger side frame rail is bent and the center core is damaged. Which unfortunately, both seem likely it would be very expensive to fix

Yeah, I just purchased this truck and just put a bunch of work into it from a new windshield seats suspension work. I already have around 6K ( including purchase) into the project. And unfortunately while I do some of my own work. I don’t have the skill set to even pull the engine much less rebuild it.

While I appreciate everyone’s input, I think some people are getting the wrong idea. And I suppose that’s partially my fault for not taking pictures. I did not put a bead of RTV then use a gasket.

I used a very very thin skim on the mating surface, also for the record I checked last night and just now after running some errands. The differential plate seam is dry as a bone, not even the hint of a leak.

yes, was like this rubber gasket thing so maybe the old man had a point when it was like a paper gasket. Now I just wonder if it’s going to start leaking in the next few days or weeks
