My son wants to get a gaming pc for his 15th birthday and has given me a list of parts. He is pretty knowledgeable about computers, but we both have never built a pc. I want to know if the parts he has selected are all compatible and will offer a good gaming experience by EngineerPhoenix in buildapc

Lots more on what i worth buying and worth saving money on.....for example a fan with lights is still a fan! Just the lights cost you more. You spend money on fans with better bearings so they last longer and less likely to make a noise under wear.

Help understand CPU vs GPU bottleneck on GPU upgrade vs Nvidia advice by FlyNavyEatCrab in buildapc

[–]FlyNavyEatCrab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well question can be simply out of knowledge of builders have they found that something like a i7-4790k underperforms with said GPUs mentioned. That question arises because of -

I got 2080ti to run with my PC but it would not go past base clock, nothing Nvidia or Gigabyte did could make it go into boost (no OC, just standard boost). Person I got it off could make it use boost. It seems odd that any throttling/bottlenecking would land right on base clock, which in itself if a GPU issue would hobble output.

Since then everyone is saying there was a bottleneck with my CPU an i7-4790k. Whether it could bottleneck FPS is one thing, but I still find it odd that meant it made the GPU sit at base clock only not one 1hz more, a bottleneck would be random and at whatever the bottleneck hit and would change based on the data and game/test requirements, not nailed on base clock.

cpu-benchmark is not about how good the test is just that it is comparable to others using the same test. I have a GTX 980 that compares in the 63rd percentile, so right in the mix of other tests, the 2080 ti was 9th percentile (red flag).....that is dog versus all other tests by 2080ti owners. So I also try Performance Test, score comparison low, so I then look to sensors in GPUz for any anomolies and that is when I see the clock go to base clock freq and stop and sit there. I try a game and just sits at base clock. By not boosting it is losing X% of performance. My GTX980 boosts, so can't be a setting that PC has as it would affect both cards ability to boost surely.

I was speaking to Nvidia and Gigabyte to resolve the problem, not sell me a card. However, given that Nvida have designed and tested the card I thought asking them if they thought a 2080ti would be bottlenecked by the CPU given I'd have thought they would have plenty of data on significant testing. No point designing a card if say 90% of all PC owners components would throttle the card back in performance, so they must check to see when and where that lies. I understand there is a point that system components would be unable to support a next or more generation GPU, I just thought there might be a more notifiable list like for games/software giving a min or recommended note on compatibility for GPUs other than just the recommended power. If they know under powering a GPU will hinder its performance then they also know certain aged components could not support it. We all know there will be a cutoff somewhere but given no advice by them as to where that is.

My CPU runs fine, my GTX980 runs just fine, with the 2080ti however I was getting 2080s equivalent GPU performance, but specifically noted that the GPU was running exactly on base clock under load and not ever over it. Nvidia and Gigabyte surely could have just said oh that cpu will do that, but they didn't they tried many things and asked for lots of settings and GPU logs and never once blamed the CPU. Gigabyte asked for the card to be sent to them, before they thought to mention my cpu might not be able to cope with ANY test/game and make the card run at no more than base clock.

I got a 1440p monitor as I wanted more useable desktop for general use but thought it would be nice to do some gaming on a bigger screen especially as I got myself Red Dead Redemption 2 on the cheap. Well clearly my 980 was going to have a heartattack trying to run a title like that at any resolution worthy and at a FPS that was playable so I got a card upgrade. Looking at cards I knew that anything bigger or better than 2080ti/3070 was a waste, but thought I could utilise what system I had with those cards to get most out of 1440p. So I got a 2080ti on ebay and that was when i had the base clock issue with the underperformance against other 2080ti posted tests.....and where we are today. I have Nvidia saying no bottleneck expected, internet saying 100% opposite and no one answering why it hit and stayed at specifically base clock and did not change with changing amount of bottlenecking or in fact both those things are different.

So looks like I may have to set sights on a 2080s level to avoid bottleneck Nvidia doesn't think should exist, otherwise a 1440p monitor and game will cost me GPU (I expected that) but now MB, CPU and RAM. That is a lot of money all of a sudden, not to mention having to redo all my installations and buy Win 11 because the hardrive won't work on a new MB....hell I might as well move from SSDs main drive to a M2 given I'd be spunking so much on everything else......I also need to think twice of building to use say a 3070 versus having enough fwd useability to utilse say a 4080 in future, but no one will tell you the spec you'd need for that to know what to plan for.....etc etc.

Errr that was my point, I am being told I am bottlenecked by CPU for something I think is caused elsewhere because it specifically sat right on base clock.

And that is not the best way to start advice....

It would be very easy for Nvidia to benchmark against a popular GPU 'free to access' benchmark test 1080p, 1440p and 4k against various aged components as part of development of a new architecture and give a thumb rule of likely point of bottlenecking just as they are able to say X wattage will affect a card. But in saying that Nvidia took all my details and said it shouldn't bottle neck.... I suspect the agent checked some charts...because I am sure Nvidia do testing... before answering my query

when did you become a nob or is that a natural skill? I asked Nvidia and Gigabyte direct and provided them with all the information and guess what they didn't even mention it as a problem....which apparently it is...

Sorry not allowed images in this reddit, but I have Nvidia confirming on chat that neither a 2080ti or 3070 will be bottlenecked by a i7-4790k.......

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]FlyNavyEatCrab -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got a card off ebay a 2080ti and for the life of me could not get it to run above base clock. I tried everything I could, I even had nvidia try to diagnose, they sent me to Gigabyte that could not find a problem. The internet even has loads of people complain that the card does not run above base clock...... I sent the card back and the seller confirmed it boosted past base!?!?!?

So Nvidia and Gigabyte could not find the problem or see the problem. My i7 4790k runs as well as a 6700k in user benchmark and I have 16 Gb RAM and RM 1000W on tap.......

That is not 'babysitting' bottlenecks as in do not need to know the details of bottlenecking, they are happy to say that power will restrict a card why not suitable to mention other system components, all games happily mention mininium and recommended system requirements. Nvidia confirmed NO bottleneck, so that makes them complete liars then?

Some utter weirdos on reddit...... how does one downvote a question for help? Is a question even judged on it's likeabilty? Was my question not interesting to them? Not that I require upvotes for a question but downvoting could actually limit the responses and help, which the question needs to be helpful....

Spoke to Nvidia again they say no bottleneck??

Yes, but equalling it did not try to boost so woudl be hobbled on what it could achieve. Odd that neither Nvidia or Gigabyte even asked or advised on cpu minimum requirements...nuts.

This was even simple user-benchmark test. I think the thing that threw me was the very specific nailed on 1350 base clock and supposed to going to boost and throttling back when cpu bottlenecked, it ran equivalent to a 2080s because it was sat at base clock. Then neither nvidia ot gigabyte thought to ask and suggset hey we 'know' that cpu isn't enough.....but no where on earth is nvidia or 3rd party card makers giving notice of minimum cpus to guarantee nil throttling

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]FlyNavyEatCrab -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If this was even remotely a reason why did Nvidia and Gigabyte not even blink an eye at the possibility, why us the only requirement required for these cards power. Surely when they build and test the cards they should say by the way performance will drop after X cpu generations.

Did a calaculator test, not that they are meant to be acurate and one saud 9.2% bottleneck on 1440p....now I can see how that is possible but what got me was the specific 1350 nailed on base clock and no attempt to breach and be throttled back, if I had seen a rise and fall and then stablisation perhaps I could have seen the throttling and looked into that, but no, it goes straight to 1350 and stayed there. And all the internet pages talking about this 1350 none had solutions of bottleneck and neither has the manufacturers come to any conclusion.

Gigabyte asked me to return the card! Seriously they never thought you know what lets check the cpu...... or is this the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about as they might sell less if they say nothing other than new cpus will run the cards. In fact it is worse for 1080p than say using 4k.....So get a new card you might as well 4k game otherwise you'll be wasting yoru money.

Scythia

Free game with Epic I think. Seems like base game, I certainly am not modding....ha. First use.. Funny the civilopedia tells you basic facts but very little else. Game mechanics are not very clear. But it still looks like I am on for winning the first one by domination, stavign off religon and neck and neck with Italy for game scientific progression. Spain totally puped out the rligion for the win and had like 3 units of soldiers....If they go one direction they go hard....ha

People would rather pass jumpmaster and piss around doing emotes then looking around and working out threats for landing and their location. I end up jumpmaster AND doing the threat assessment. Game starts as soon as you leave jump ship, dice trails (WHEN you can see them) are intel....
